Very excited to share my latest piece in Forbes - "Adaptation and resilience in corporate climate agendas" If any of the below resonates, esp. with those working on adaptation + resilience and/or corporate climate + sustainability - our team at Riffle Ventures would love to hear from you! Main idea - climate adaptation and resilience can be an innovation driver for companies and we need to accelerate this agenda. 🏭 Most discussions around corporations and their climate agendas focus on if, how, and how quickly, big businesses are reducing their greenhouse gas emissions, as well as decreasing their own negative externalities on the natural environment. 💰 However, in parallel climate change is creating growing financial, infrastructure, health and other risks that could disrupt large companies, some of which is already happening. While the tools and strategies for decarbonization are fairly well-covered, we are only scratching the surface when it comes to building resilience and adapting to a warming planet. 🈺 Of course, emissions and corporate sustainability targets need urgent attention and commitment, but in parallel we need to make sure companies writ large are adapting to and building resilience against climate risks - e.g. droughts, floods, fires, grid instability and weakening infrastructure - are all a growing reality on a warming planet. 🆘 Corporations, regardless of industry and geography will require support across the board in navigating climate change's most pressing threats. The risk of not doing so could have near-term, material impacts on protecting critical infrastructure as well as access to necessary products and services - food and medicine - and could also negatively impact human's themselves - heat stress, job loss, etc. 🤖 There is a growing technology solution set focusing on climate adaptation and resilience, and we need to bridge the gap between between these climate tech startups and the corporate sector. In turn, corporations can have an enormous impact in helping to scale climate innovations and bolster the surrounding ecosystem. It was so great to be 65 people and take action on climate. 💡 I learned something new - that without increased transmission capacity, it will be difficult to transition to a 100% clean power grid. Battery storage alone is not enough to adequately and efficiently balance a grid with significant solar and wind generation, we need to add total capacity and improve interregional transmission across the entire U.S. power grid.

Check out this recent IUCN report on the Regenerative Blue Economy if you are interested in what the future of the blue economy should look like. Below, I share my perspective as a member of the advisory committee of this initiative, on the main message and a couple features I found particularly striking. ✅The main message (as I read it): The report builds a historical perspective to explain why the 'blue economy', or even the 'sustainable blue economy', are not sufficient anymore. As the decline of ocean life has already been so dramatic that there is not much left to sustain or conserve, we need to raise our ambition and aim at a 'Regenerative Blue Economy'. One that actively addresses climate change an biodiversity loss. Alexandra Cousteau first convinced me of this in 2018 and it has guided my efforts in the space since. As a member of the advisory committee of this report, this was the main message I tried to pass on. 🧬The report (page 11, box 1) says the Regenerative Blue Economy is based on "scientifically grounded assessments". Indeed, I believe we will succeed in building a Regenerative Blue Economy only if we can embed science at the core of economic decisions. We need to overhaul our economic governance (shareholder meetings, boards, investment committees, etc...) to achieve this. This is why for example at SWEN Blue Ocean we created an Impact Committee composed of science and conservation experts to help us make the right investment decisions. We need to do this at scale, across the economy. 🌟Pages 30-31 of the report recognizes the potential of the impact framework of the Ocean Impact Navigator, developed by 1000 Ocean Startups, to apply to the economy as a whole, not just startups. I have always believed that, meaning the impact of the Navigator may expand beyond ocean startups at some point. Helping characterize what belongs to the Regenerative Blue Economy is a step in that direction. Congratulations to the lead authors, RAPHAELA LE GOUVELLO, Francois Simard, and the IUCN team. Climate Capital Guidebook: The Biden-Harris Administration is releasing a new Climate Capital Guidebook to provide a simple, comprehensive map of capital programs across the federal government that are available to climate-related start-ups, small- and medium-sized businesses, and their investors. 🇺🇸 The U.S. Federal departments and offices have just released the "Voluntary Carbon Markets Joint Policy Statement and Principles”. We at International Carbon Registry celebrate more clarity on the direction of this important market and its role in the climate crisis. Notable developments include: • The emergence of multi-stakeholder initiatives that have set out standards and principles for high-integrity credit development and responsible credit use; • Improvements to key crediting methodologies, their guiding standards, and tracking systems; • New and improved analytical products and services that aim to strengthen credit transparency and quality comparability, such as carbon credit rating services; • Technologies to support robust measurement, monitoring, reporting, and verification (MMRV); • Multilateral rules, guidance, and procedures developed under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement and the international aviation sector's global carbon market-based measure, which shape certified emissions reductions and removals that often find their home in VCMs'; and • Advances in the development of market infrastructure to improve transparency and liquidity, as well as the integrity of market transactions.

After years of thinking about it, I started publishing articles on all things Climatetech back in April. I want to preview a piece I've been working on with two friends and get your thoughts. Writing has been a humbling endeavor, but no small part of that comes from my desire to write and research a bit of everything. The inevitable development is that I have 30 articles in varying stages of completion. Given my work to build Offset Atlas, an effort to create more accessible on-ramps to carbon markets through insights and education, my thoughts and thus writing have gravitated towards writing about #Carbon and the #VCM. I'm excited to say that Mike Martinez, Kaden Gulamani, and I are nearing completion for an article on consolidation in the carbon markets. As we wrap up I want to hear your big questions. As we scale climate tech solutions, we need to carefully consider the impact to local communities. Thanks Evan Halper for a great front page article in today's The Washington Post that highlights this issue with a proposed CO2 storage plan in Montana. Injecting and storing CO2 in porous geological formations sounds scary, particularly given the negative side effects of fracking. I think the concerned ranchers in Montana are completely justified. But, we need to solve the climate crisis, and CO2 removal is an important part of the solution. This issue will continue as more and more first-of-a-kind (FOAK) projects break ground and expand. Early, frequent, and transparent community engagement is critical. #climatechange #climatesolutions #climateaction

Well, let’s just say it: New York Climate Week is “the new COP.” As our good friends at Sightline said so well, “Vibe-wise, this NYCW centered more on solutions and getting down to brass tacks, rather than outlining high-level problems.” NYCW is where people go to get things done. Sure, it was a mosh pit of decentralized, self-assembling change, but…like NYC itself, the chaos works. Let’s call it: NYCW>COP.

Policy can help, as it turns out. A new report by Clean Investment Monitor shows that the rate of carbon emission cuts in the United States has doubled since the passage of the #InflationReductionAct, due to the growth of renewable and energy efficiency projects. Investing in a number of companies that are generating energy savings, jobs, and revenues, this is very exciting!

Highlights that once overwhelmingly dominant, California’s share of climate tech funding has decreased significantly over the last five years as ecosystems across the country build momentum. Good to see Denver & Boulder Colorado ranked at the number two position in both deal value and deal count Revolution believes that America is more competitive when more people in more places are part of the innovation ecosystem. Accordingly, a more dispersed climate tech economy will lead to greater innovation and more ready adoption of climate solutions. 🌏 Climate risks: the elephant in the room that everyone's trying to fit in the closet. As U.S. ESG fund flows retract, 63 new climate funds quietly raised $82B (since Sept, '23). Here are five considerations for CEOs building software businesses to #adapt: 🌪️ Extreme weather impacts -- risks include: asset damage, supply chain woes, insurance liabilities, and health hazards.  💼 Changing customer demands -- 66% of Fortune Global 500 firms prioritize climate, shaping supplier picks. Walmart and Apple lead with clean energy and recyclability.  💡 Rising energy costs -- these are surging alongside rising demand. 2023 saw a 12% growth in the Power Purchase Agreement market, driven by tech's shift to renewables, anticipating reduced reliance on fossil fuels by 2050. Training an LLM requires (much) more compute power than traditional AI models. 🌱 Regulatory decarbonization interventions -- as global regulations tighten, firms are pushed to reveal environmental impact and embrace decarbonization. The EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism and California's SB 253 exemplify this trend. 💰 Missed revenue opportunities -- rapidly growing markets like sustainability reporting and risk analysis offer lucrative opportunities. When it comes to climate innovation, the private sector is critical for driving change - and investing in climate does not need to be concessionary! In the past, philanthropy and inter-developmental institutions were leading efforts against climate change. But today, it's totally shifting in a new direction. It’s the private sector that’s the best at scaling solutions - government and academia are just not built to expand innovative solutions in the same manner. Here's why I see the private sector will continue expanding this market in impactful ways: 1️. Climate Dynamics While the discourse on climate change may vary, the global consensus is strong. Recent events (like the severe heat crisis in East Africa, for instance) only underscore the pressing need for immediate action. 2️. Governmental Backing Governments across the globe, from the EU and China to the US, are mobilizing resources to address climate challenges. Through substantial funding and policy support, they're paving the way for innovative climate solutions to thrive on a global scale. They’re creating the ecosystem and infrastructure that will allow new businesses to flourish. 3️. Environmental Awareness Gen Z and Gen Alpha are (of course) very aware of environmental issues. That means there's a growing foundation in which people can - and will - build companies around sustainability. This new generation of leaders is driving innovation and entrepreneurship in this space. It’s clear that climate innovation is an expanding market - and the opportunity there is significant. By digging in now, the private sector can capitalize on its potential and (more importantly) pave the way to a greener future.
