Researchers at UMass Amherst have developed a groundbreaking method for detecting PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances) in water. Their innovative approach could revolutionize testing for these "forever chemicals" in our water systems. Dr. Chang Liu led the team to create a detection system that combines cyclodextrin with nanopore technology, making PFAS testing more accessible and cost-effective. While current testing methods require million-dollar equipment, this new approach could reduce costs to just thousands of dollars. The device can detect PFAS at levels as low as 400 ppt, offering promise as a first-screening tool for identifying high-risk water sources. This development comes at a crucial time, as the EPA recently established its first national safety standard for PFAS in drinking water at 4 ppt. Water and sustainability reporting go hand in hand. For example, approximately 45% of KETOS customers use the KETOS SHIELD to monitor water so that they can recycle it in their process again or use it elsewhere. However, water conservation and reuse is often eclipsed by talk of carbon emission reduction. And yet, these two sustainability goals - carbon and water reduction - don’t have to compete. In fact, they can complement each other, with one naturally driving down the other. In recent years, the EU has begun to push for more robust environmental action. This includes elevating sustainability reporting to the same scrutiny as financial reporting. The Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) further integrates sustainability (and sustainability reporting) into modern business requirements. CSRD broadens the scope of reporting beyond just carbon to include pollution, biodiversity, waste, and, most importantly, water. Disclosures will require annual reporting alongside financials and will also be subject to audit. While the EU recently paused CSRD for some companies and industries to give them more time to come into alignment with its compliance directives, there’s no question that CSRD is the new normal, not just for European companies but for international companies based in the EU (and can have knock-on effects up and down the value chain). KETOS is already on the ground in Europe, expanding its footprint and working with companies that must align with these new CSRD requirements. There is no recent family and friends gathering I'm attending where people (who know I'm working in water treatment) do not ask if I have a solution to address the PFAs issue.  While it can take me a long time to explain the differences between existing water treatment solutions, the definitions of POU and POE, and the distinction between a water softener (ion-exchange resin solution) and an activated carbon filter, I found this article by my brilliant colleague Steven Woltornist to be very helpful in answering some of these questions.
