As the CDK DMS system has been repaired, dealerships are now back online. However, this brings with it a significant amount of pressure on everyone involved, from dealership staff to the vendors providing integrated software solutions. Dealers and their employees are now tasked with manually entering data into the DMS for all business transactions in sales, service, parts, and more, covering the past few weeks. This is no small feat, especially with the added urgency of producing accurate financial statements for OEMs, private and public shareholders, and banks. Adding to this challenge, tomorrow is the 4th of July holiday. Many hardworking dealership employees have planned vacations, making this a particularly stressful time everyone at the dealership, especially for those in the accounting departments. It’s crucial that this data is entered correctly, despite the immense pressure. It’s more important than ever for those in leadership positions at dealerships, OEMS’s, lending institutions, and vendor companies to support and encourage their teams and dealership employees during this time. Recognize the extra effort being put in, provide the necessary resources, and foster an environment of teamwork, resilience and support. They have their people and processes in place. They do the same thing every day, regardless. They are retaining and promoting their people. They are keeping inventory fresh. There are several reasons why someone might leave one dealership and choose to buy from another. Here are three common reasons: 1. **Price**: One of the most common reasons is that the other dealership offered a better price on the desired vehicle. Customers are always looking for the best deal possible, so if they can find a similar car at a lower price at another dealership, they may choose to buy from there instead. 2. **Customer Service**: Another reason could be related to the customer service experience at the first dealership. If a customer feels ignored, mistreated, or generally unhappy with the service they received, they may decide to take their business elsewhere. Listen up #autodealers #automotive #dealerships: I don’t know jack shit about the dealer business as a whole. But what I do know is people management. And I am beginning to see the issue with technology vendors. One in particular I’ve run across many times. My advice? STOP trying to be so damn innovative and focus on your core business. Get that shit right first and be the best at it. I heard a great piece of advice from Charlie Mungar (one half of Berkshire Hathaway): focus on simplicity. There is genius in simple businesses. I haven’t met a dealer employee yet that sings the praises of this one particular automotive vendor. Why not? They try to do too much and haven’t figured out their core business yet. So interesting. Hearing these stories helps me focus on us being the best. I don’t want to be the biggest. Just the best.

The best sales advice I ever received in my 30 years in the car business was: "If you don’t ask, the answer is always... No." In my three decades of experience as a salesperson, manager, and dealership owner, one of the most frustrating things is when salespeople fail to ask for the business. The fact is, there are good salespeople who would be great if they learned to 'ask' for referrals. Remember, in sales, "You don’t have to be great to start, but you have to start to be great." Reality check — why some buyers prefer to skip the dealership: By now, you’ve heard — Volkswagen’s Scout Motors announced plans to sell its electric SUV and pickup directly to consumers (D2C) — bypassing dealerships entirely. It’s a frustrating move for VW dealers to be sure — And dealer associations are gearing up for a potential legal fight. But it begs a more important question… Are buyers really ready to leave the dealership experience behind? To get some answers, I ran a poll. In just 24 hours, over 20,000 people weighed in, with the majority saying they’d prefer D2C over a traditional dealership for their next car. Whether or not buyers even really know the differences between the two is a question for another day — For me — the real story was in the 730+ comments. Many buyers voiced their frustrations with the car buying process, describing it as confusing and time-consuming. Surprise fees, unclear pricing, and high-pressure tactics from (some) salespeople were top complaints. So — it’s not really surprising that the D2C model seems appealing. And then there’s Tesla… Tesla’s approach offers a set price, right on their website, with no haggling. Yet — even when Tesla raises prices, customers don’t push back as they tend to do with dealerships. Why? This type of fixed pricing — visible to everyone — removes the feeling of information asymmetry. And for many buyers, a transaction like that just feels more transparent. But D2C isn’t perfect. While it focuses on the initial sale, it often lacks after-sales support — an area where dealerships have a stronger upper hand. Local dealership service teams are accessible locally and provide a level of after-sale support that’s harder to match through a D2C model. And legacy automakers can’t just flip to D2C on a dime either., Ford teased a similar model for its EVs but quickly reversed course due to rigid state franchise laws, which are meant to protect dealerships from manufacturer monopolies. And yet, the push for D2C sales isn’t fading away… The reason? It’s a solution that provides consumers with consistent transparency, clear communication, and alignment of expectations throughout the car buying journey. The thing is — many dealers are already adopting these principles. For example, some are eliminating price negotiations, opting for up-front, transparent pricing — This strategy may mean lower short-term profits, but it’s winning customer trust and building long-term value. They’re also simplifying the finance process with a single point of contact for the entire purchase journey. For dealers who don’t embrace this shift, the outlook is dim. But if the industry rises to the occasion, D2C could be the “competitor” that sparks a transformation of change. New challenge facing dealers: A dealer purchased 8 Volkswagen EVs (ID4 model) But, apparently, because of the battery weight… Only 7 could fit on the back of a vehicle hauler (with standard capacity for 10 vehicles). Has anyone ever heard of this before? This dealer had no choice but to schedule a second truck — At an additional 15% cost. Bottom line: As more dealers begin acquiring used EVs in light of the improving deals, expect shipping costs across the industry to rise given the transport limitations. Lithia Motors expands into North Florida, adding $200 million in revenue Acquiring these dealerships solidifies Lithia Motors' position as a dominant U.S. auto retail market player. Lithia Motors has expanded its U.S. dealership portfolio by entering the North Florida market by acquiring three dealerships expected to generate more than $200 million in annual revenue. On September 9, Lithia acquired Duval Honda and Duval Acura, located in Jacksonville and Subaru of Gainesville, from Duval Motor Co. The purchase marks Lithia’s first foray into this fast-growing region. Bryan DeBoer, the CEO of Lithia Motors, is thrilled about the expansion. He stated that the award-winning dealerships have a great customer service and community engagement legacy, aligning with their growth strategy. Lithia plans to keep the dealership names to maintain continuity and uphold its local reputation. The deal was managed by Kevin Nill, managing director of Haig Partners, a buy-sell advisory firm in Fort Lauderdale, with the help of associate Matt DeSantis. Nill highlighted North Florida’s appeal as a rapidly growing market with lighter congestion than other parts of the state. He emphasised the ongoing demand for solid and desirable franchises in hot markets despite the broader market’s financial performance slowdown. Top brands in sought-after locations continue to attract interest from buyers like Lithia. The acquisitions also reflect Lithia’s aggressive growth strategy as the company continues to expand its national footprint. With the Duval acquisitions, Lithia’s expected annualized revenue from acquisitions in 2024 now totals $5.9 billion. For Duval Motor Co., this sale allows the family-owned business, led by CEO Hampton Graham and President Alex Graham, to focus on its flagship store, Duval Ford, in Jacksonville. “Duval Ford will continue to carry on the incredible legacy created by the McRae family,” Hampton Graham said, referencing the company’s deep roots in Jacksonville, where the family has been operating since 1921.
