The profits of banks in India surpassed that of IT services, which has traditionally been the most profitable sector. Almost all banks are now commanding premium on book value. Asset quality is consistently improving. The banking sector is really in the best of health in decades.

It’s almost ironic. Indian startup founders are celebrated as the torchbearers of innovation, yet the cracks in governance within equity-funded startups continue to deepen. 🚩 I’ve been watching this space closely, and the recurring governance mishaps are hard to ignore. Stories of financial mismanagement, founder exits under pressure, and power struggles seem to be the norm these days. Why does it feel like every other month, a promising startup crumbles — not necessarily because the idea was flawed, but because the leadership lost sight of their responsibility? The truth is, when relatively easy access to capital meets a lack of strong governance, chaos is almost inevitable. Young Indian founders often begin their journey with big dreams but quickly get entangled in boardroom politics and investor demands. It’s one thing to raise capital, but managing relationships with stakeholders—while staying true to your mission—requires a whole different skill set. And that’s where many are faltering. 💼 Take a moment to think about this: How many Indian startups have fallen prey to rapid expansions funded by VC money, only to realize their foundations weren’t strong enough to scale sustainably? We've seen it across sectors — ed-tech, fintech, consumer tech — and it's becoming painfully clear that financial backing alone isn't enough to build a legacy. At some point, we need to ask: Are we measuring success too quickly by funding rounds and valuations instead of sustainable growth? Yet, the solution isn't to demonize the founders or investors. The problem lies in the absence of sustainable structures — mentorship, governance frameworks, and accountability mechanisms. It’s not enough to encourage founders to 'move fast and break things.' They need to learn the value of sustainable leadership and responsible growth. 🛠️ But I believe in this new wave of Indian entrepreneurs. There’s grit, ambition, and a deep desire to make a mark. The next big challenge will be balancing speed with governance. Will they rise above the temptations of shortcuts and build something that lasts? I’ll leave you with this thought: Can the next generation of founders turn this governance crisis into an opportunity to redefine leadership? Or will we continue to see promising startups falter under their own weight? I’d also love to hear your thoughts—what’s the one governance practice you think every startup should prioritize??

Congratulations to BCG Henderson Institute (BHI) Fellow Sagar Goel and BHI Ambassador Orsolya Kovacs on winning the 2023 HBR Prize! The HBR Prize, judged by an independent panel of business and academic leaders with input from members of HBR’s Advisory Board, spotlights the most outstanding article published each year in Harvard Business Review. As a part of their BHI research, Sagar and Orsi co-authored a study on how companies are reskilling their employees in a rapidly evolving era of automation and AI. For their article “Reskilling in the Age of AI,” Sagar and Orsolya, together with Jorge Tamayo, Leila Doumi, and Raffaella Sadun, interviewed leaders at some 40 organizations around the world that are investing in large-scale reskilling programs. The once-cherished concept of a "dream job" is being eroded by layoffs and an investor-driven culture that prioritizes short-term gains over long-term stability. Disillusionment with Dream Jobs The idea of a dream job—once synonymous with stability and purpose—is now a mirage. Frequent layoffs have become a go-to strategy for companies under financial pressure, leaving employees feeling betrayed and uncertain about their future. This disillusionment is especially pronounced among younger professionals facing the stark realities of a volatile job market. The Investor Mindset The root cause of this disillusionment is the investor mindset that prioritizes short-term financial returns over long-term employee welfare. Companies often cave to investor pressure, prioritizing quarterly earnings over sustainable growth and job security. This approach devalues employees, treating them as expendable assets rather than essential contributors. The Decline of Human Connection As corporate priorities shift, meaningful human connections in the workplace are increasingly compromised. The focus on efficiency and profit has led to transactional work relationships, eroding the sense of belonging and purpose. Employees are valued for output rather than their intrinsic worth, leading to widespread dissatisfaction. The Daksh Experience: A Lost Culture Reflecting on my near-start at Daksh 24 years ago, the contrast with today’s corporate environment is stark. Daksh was built on people-centric values, emphasizing happiness, growth, and togetherness. Employees' well-being was paramount, and raising concerns was seen as an opportunity for improvement. Sadly, this culture was lost, Daksh got acquired—a missed opportunity to build a more inclusive, nurturing corporate world. The Rise of Toxic Work Cultures The erosion of human connection and the investor-driven mindset have given rise to toxic work cultures, marked by poor leadership and a lack of empathy. These environments exacerbate employee disillusionment, creating a vicious cycle of disengagement and dissatisfaction. Conclusion The concept of a dream job is fading, replaced by a reality of instability and disenchantment. It’s time for a cultural transformation that values people over profits. The future of work depends on embracing these changes and creating a more humane and supportive corporate environment. It just struck me. On the other day, I was on a call with a business leader in Korea. We were solving a use case for Nigeria and Kenya. All from my office in Bangalore. But here’s where it gets interesting (and complex): → We had to factor in geo-political tensions → Houthi attacks delayed shipments → The Ukraine/Russia war disrupted freight routes Suddenly, we weren’t just solving local issues. We were navigating a web of global connectivity. And this is what SaaS founders in Bharat need to embrace: → The world is smaller than you think → Your market isn’t just India; it’s everywhere → And geopolitics will play a bigger role in your growth Building for Bharat isn’t just about local impact.
