7 Common Scrum Anti-Patterns From Anti-Patterns to Best Practices: Transform Your Scrum Journey Scrum is a powerful framework that helps teams deliver value consistently, but it’s easy to fall into anti-patterns—habits or practices that may seem productive but harm the team’s effectiveness over time. Here are some common Scrum anti-patterns and how to deal with them: 1) 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐦𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥 (𝐖𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐚𝐥𝐥 𝐢𝐧 𝐒𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐦 𝐂𝐥𝐨𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠) Teams try to squeeze traditional waterfall processes into Scrum sprints, with all the design happening upfront and testing at the end. To avoid this, encourage incremental development where design, coding, and testing occur continuously throughout the sprint. 2) 𝐎𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐢𝐭𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐩𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐭 𝐁𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐥𝐨𝐠 Teams bite off more than they can chew, often due to external pressure. To fix this, focus on realistic sprint planning. Leverage past velocity data and ensure the team owns its commitments without feeling pressured to overdeliver. 3) 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐚𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐝-𝐮𝐩 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐒𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐬 𝐔𝐩𝐝𝐚𝐭𝐞 When team members treat the daily stand-up as a report to the Scrum Master rather than a collaborative problem-solving session, it loses value. Instead, encourage open discussions where team members talk to each other about progress, challenges, and next steps. 4) 𝐈𝐠𝐧𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐓𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥 𝐃𝐞𝐛𝐭 Pushing through features without addressing technical debt can lead to long-term productivity issues. Ensure that time is set aside in the sprint to tackle technical debt, either through dedicated backlog items or by embedding debt-reduction tasks into feature work. 5) 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐎𝐰𝐧𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐓𝐚𝐬𝐤𝐦𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫 When the Product Owner assigns tasks instead of setting goals, it disempowers the team. A Certified Scrum Master with SAFe credentials asks: "Should a Scrum Master capture and publish meeting minutes for the Daily Scrum? What does the Scrum Guide say?" Where exactly have we gone wrong, as a community and industry, in teaching Scrum, that one can get certified as a Scrum Master along with SAFe and not know the answer to this question? The answer is there are **no minutes taken** because the Daily Scrum is a critical inspect/adapt point where the team shares their progress and impediments with each other in order to plan out what to do for the day. To outsiders, it might look like a status meeting, but it's actually part of working ON the process vs. IN the process. It's in the Scrum Guide, which everyone who has obtained a cert should know where to download. At a bit of a loss, here.

# some good starting points for a Scrum master to check when you join a new team#: 1.  Which boards the team uses? 2.  What iteration are you in now? 3.  How long is the iteration? 4.  What are the team velocity and capacity? 5.  What are the epics of the product? 6.  Is there a backlog? 7.  Are there stories rollover? 8.  Do Iterations have a goal? 9.  Is the story descripted from the user perspective? 10. Is the story description understandable? 11. Is there an acceptance criteria? 12. What issue type are used in Jira? 13. What is the Workflow? 14. What Is the release schedule? 15.
