President Biden's historic decision to end his re-election bid reveals 4 takeaways about how data can (should!) inform decision-making. Crisis management requires foresight, and attacking the legal system only complicates efforts to rebuild trust. Erin Powers, founder of Powers MediaWorks, underscored the need for prevention and foresight. "The important lesson organizational leaders can learn is the importance of prevention and risk management. Does your digital advocacy campaign need a bubble bath? Axios has identified 12 bubbles impacting the 2024 presidential campaign and there are implications for issue advocacy here as well. It's useful to think in "bubbles"- it provides a way of thinking about reaching your audience that's less tactical than thinking channel by channel. How many places can you reach your audience? How can you surround them with your message in their bubble? And be nimble...bubbles burst. And new ones form.

Kudos to Eleanor Hawkins and the Axios Communicators team for their "1 big thing" visual of the day. Yes, it's reductive guidance on when to speak out and when not to, and yes, you should think through it with more nuance and specificity to a situation at hand, but these are great questions to start with when you're wondering how to communicate through murky or uncomfortable events. Some other questions to consider: ▶ Do we know enough about this situation? If not, do we have a sense of timing for more information to come through? ▶ Can we meaningfully influence the situation by speaking out? ▶ If we are communicating about this, who is the right person to serve as our voice?

PR people should never be "yes" people. If you're not getting strategic guidance, pushback and caveats from your PR people, you have a "yes" person. They'll issue that press release on election day, extend that headline to 4 lines, and include those other two pieces of news in your big announcement even though it clutters things up. This will only end up hurting your programs and outcomes. Good PR is strategy, collaboration, thoughtfulness, and the time-tested experience of knowing what works and what doesn't. A "no" can sometimes be better than a "yes".

Pro PR Tip 💡 Build media connections and relationships before you need them. Disinformation is a growing problem and having reporters who already are on your side and know what you stand for is the best way to combat the Internet trolls - which seem to be everywhere (even in places you'd expect to be credible). It's much harder to get your commentary placed in the midst of disinformation if they've never heard of you before -- but if they've covered you before and trust you, they'll continue to trust you. Because while you can't totally avoid the dark side of the Internet - repeating your values publicly, prioritizing a positive message and stacking reporters who champion your work will always help you come out on top. 🔥 P.S.
