SIZING UP POTENTIAL DOWNSIDE RISK FOR NEW-CROP CORN AND SOYBEAN PRICES — by Joseph Janzen The May 2024 WASDE report sets expectations for market fundamentals for the remainder of the corn and soybean marketing year. The most recent report displayed continued optimism regarding domestic corn and soybean demand for biofuel use. There is no immediate signal that USDA’s forecast is overly optimistic, but lower corn and soybean use related to concerns about a biofuel supply glut does pose downside price risk. The possible scale of a large change in biofuels use – estimated here at about 10% of total marketing year biofuels use – is considerably smaller than weather-related production risk that will be a consistent topic of market chatter between now and the end of the summer. The historic evidence points to the idea that commodity use quantities are typically small: commodity demand is inelastic. Though commodity price changes are typically larger than changes in quantity in percentage terms, the price impact of such quantity changes in the marketing year ahead would also be mitigated by the presence of ample existing inventories. Sustainability has grown to become a key consideration for a wide range of purchasing behaviors across the consumer marketplace. A recent Ipsos survey found that nearly 40 percent of consumers said they would pay more for environmentally friendly products, including food. Whether that finding translates to in-store behavior remains to be seen. But as an aspirational consumer preference, it paints a picture of opportunity for Illinois farmers, who could one day be rewarded for farm-level #conservation and #sustainability practices. To support Illinois soybean farmers in those efforts, the Illinois Soybean Association (ISA) is an active partner in the Illinois Sustainable Ag Partnership (ISAP). Lean hog, cattle futures turn lower on uncertain demand - CME Cattle futures supported by corn futures; hog futures ease Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) livestock futures turned lower on Monday, as cattle futures fell on signs of profit taking, a steady cattle cash market and uncertainty about consumer demand for beef this fall, Reuters reported, citing market analysts. CME feeder cattle futures saw some support early in the session when Chicago Board of Trade corn futures dropped sharply, traders said. But as corn futures recovered, concerns of rising feed costs at a time when packers' profit margins have been firmly in the red weighed on contracts, they said. Wholesale beef prices were mixed Monday morning, with the US Department of Agriculture reporting that boxed beef cutout prices for choice was down 2 cents at $313.75 per hundredweight (cwt) and select cutout up $2.61 at $300.07 per cwt. Hog futures eased, even though wholesale US pork prices were mostly higher early in the day. But pork cutout prices for ham turned sharply lower, according to USDA data, which added pressure to futures. Pork processors slaughtered 482,000 hogs on Monday, higher than the 453,000 head a week ago and above the 477,242 animals processed the same time a year earlier, according to USDA data. CME August live cattle futures ended down 1.600 cents at 186.975 cents per pound, while most-active October live cattle futures fell 1.750 cents at 186.800 cents per pound. CME August feeders ended 3.275 cents lower at 256.425 cents per pound. CME August lean hog futures ended 2.025 cents lower at 91.450 cents per pound, and in mid-session dipped to the lowest price since July 16. October lean hog futures ended down 3.375 cents at 74.825 cents per pound. USDA demonstrates impact of fertilizer prices on corn production costs--The United States Department of Agriculture's Economic Research Service (USDA ERS) has recently published a report detailing the significant role of fertilizer costs in corn production. Fertilizer, a crucial input for corn growers, typically represents the largest variable expense in the crop's cultivation, particularly in the critical planting months of April and May. Historically, the cost of fertilizer per acre for corn has seen fluctuations over the years. According to the USDA ERS's Commodity Costs and Returns data product, which is updated annually every May, the average cost from 2006 to 2021 was approximately $125 per acre, without adjusting for inflation. This figure experienced a sharp increase in 2022, reaching an average of $225.78 per acre, before declining to an estimated $186.73 in 2023. This trend indicates a significant 89-percent increase in costs from 2021 to 2022, followed by a 17-percent decrease from 2022 to 2023. The report also provides insight into other production costs faced by corn farmers, including operating expenses like seed, fuel, and chemicals, as well as overhead costs encompassing labor, machinery capital recovery, and the opportunity cost of land. This latter category accounts for the potential rent or income forgone by farmers choosing to cultivate their land rather than lease it out. Notably, fertilizer expenses constituted about 22 percent of the total per-acre corn production costs from 2006 to 2016. This proportion dropped to an average of 17 percent from 2017 to 2021, hitting historical lows. However, the spike in prices in 2022 elevated fertilizer costs to approximately 24 percent of total costs, though this was still lower than the 26 percent peak observed in 2008. Despite a reduction in fertilizer prices from 2022 to 2023, overall corn production costs have remained high relative to levels observed in 2021 and prior years. Preliminary data from the USDA’s Agricultural Marketing Service indicates a decrease in the prices of key fertilizers such as anhydrous ammonia, urea, and liquid nitrogen (32 percent) from 2023 to 2024, with slight increases noted in February’s second reporting period. The full cost of production data for 2023, which will further elucidate these trends, is scheduled for release on May 1, 2024.
