Why are high-level leaders like Oprah and Ray Dalio such believers in meditation? Why does Salesforce have meditation rooms in all its offices? Why does Google have a program ("Search Inside") focused entirely on teaching meditation to its team? Because learning to sit with yourself, in stillness, is an invaluable skill. Meditation can be hard for many -- which is another reason why I feel so strongly about breathwork, as it gives the mind and body something to "do" as a stepping stone to meditation (and in many studies is more effective than meditation at calming the mind and reducing anxiety and stress!) Over the past week I spent time researching and developing a #customgpt bot for a family member preparing to begin radiation treatment. To personalize the voice of the bot I thought about a character that would bring this person some levity, so they took on the personality and spirit of Selena Meyer, a fictional character from a tv show that always brings laughter to my family member. The research process was intensive, but the act of building the bot helped me learn more and also gave me an opportunity to try and communicate care and love. Today I was doing follow up research and learned about 'OncoBot,' who is an example of a Healthbot (CataractBot is also very interesting). These bots are the result of partnerships between NGO's, universities, and leaders in the #AI field like Microsoft. Have you heard of OncoBot? I hadn't and will admit it was only because of the aforementioned experiment that I came across the research on it. While there are many things we rightfully should be concerned about when it comes to the deployment and ubiquity of #chatbots, I very strongly believe we need a balanced conversation that simultaneously explores the new possibilities and life-changing/saving ways this technology is evolving too. Our students too need these stories. If we want to build a future where emerging technologies are used in ways that bring care to society in new ways it helps to amplify the use cases that are already modeling that today. I can’t stop talking about NLP because it’s completely transformed me. An EQ blunder I make all the time: Only recognizing my "dominant" or "most acceptable" emotion. Here are two high-EQ examples of people doing the opposite. 1/ The songwriter and artist Adrianne Lenker shared in a recent interview how a cocktail of four emotions inspired her to write the song “Cattails.” She wrote the song in one night. Here's what she had to say about it: “I was missing Minnesota where I grew up, and I was thinking about great-grandma. She died when I was about 20. “I was just thinking of childhood and the way that she’d kind of take care of us. We’d paint with her, and she had a dune buggy, and we’d ride horses. “And when I think about her, and this place in Northern Minnesota, it makes my heart feel open and heavy and sad and happy all at the same time.” Artists express emotions for a living. So, I guess it’s not a total surprise that Adrianne could rattle off the four emotions that drove her songwriting. But it is impressive. The EQ Takeaway: Practice listing out more than one feeling at a time to grow your self-awareness. 2/ A mother in Jane Shapiro’s story “Poltergeist” admits to a second, less acceptable emotion. The mother watches her kids walk off with their friends, and she says: “A wave of feeling broke over me; it was an unfamiliar combination—real deep sadness and heart-stopping relief. “I would miss them so much I’d never get over it—I couldn’t live without them. “At the same time, for my purposes, they weren’t leaving fast enough. I couldn’t wait another minute to start not caring so much.” Most parents would share “sadness.” It’s the obvious, dominant, and most socially acceptable emotion. But this character names that second emotion—relief. And that’s the reality of feelings. They can be unexpected, undesired, and directly at odds with another feeling. Educators take note. As the world shifts under our feet, we have to rebalance or risk losing our footing. We're going to have to design learning experiences differently. No more long lectures. No more death by slide decks. The lesson or training will have to centre around developing skills in the students through hands-on activities. Less teacher talk. More tinkering, trying, testing, failing and figuring things out. "Metz." The surgeon holds out his hand. I fumble to find the Metzenbaum scissors buried somewhere in the crammed tray of gleaming instruments laid out before me. After what seems an eternity I find the scissors. Turn them around so they fit neatly into the surgeon's hand. I’m slow, I know this. Anatomy? Check. Surgical approach? Check. But the instruments? Struggling. I try to remember the names of the sleek, sterile tools spooning into each other on the tray. I say their names in my head, rehearse their function. But I get confused about the order of things. Muddled about each instrument's specific purpose. Would I ever be ready with the right instrument at the right time? I practiced between surgeries. During operating room cleaning days. Any moment I could get my hands on those instruments, I repeated their names out loud. Rehearsed the movements I needed to make to get each instrument smoothly into the surgeon's hand. Solo practice only took me so far. The real breakthrough? A peer who observed and provided real-time feedback. Corrected my instrument selection, refined my handoff technique, and helped smooth out the inefficiencies in my movements. Then it happened. Fumbling turned to flow. During a nephrectomy, everything aligned. No more mental gymnastics trying to recall instrument names. No more clumsy handoffs. My hands moved smoothly, intuitively, two steps ahead of the surgeon. The lesson? This shift from muddling through to mastery isn't magic. Mastery requires: 1. Deliberate practice 2. Expert feedback 3. Continuous refinement 4. Patience through the learning curve It's the same in medical writing, especially when you're learning a new specialty. Appealing for advice from non-fiction authors. I’m writing a book (mock-up of what it could look like below). My options are: 1. I seek an agent and/or publisher to get it published “properly”. 2. I self-publish a paperback and kindle version via Amazon. 3.
