Pleased to share my latest opinion piece titled "To Grow Exports, India's Trade Promotion Councils Have To Jump Start Into A New Era" published in the Secretariat. The article argues that export promotion councils are stuck in the years of Nehruvian India and need to adapt to the 21st century’s challenges and opportunities. They could do with more dynamism and should employ diverse talent to craft new strategies. Therefore, policymakers need to adopt a holistic approach to drive crucial reforms in EPCs to enhance their efficiency in rendering quality services. We currently lack the skilled workforce necessary to meet this growing demand. Many of the workers in the garment sector are migrants who do not possess the required expertise, and while some manufacturers can train them, others do not. This disparity creates a challenge in scaling up production efficiently. In comparison, countries like Bangladesh and China have made impressive strides in the global textile market by prioritising workforce development and skills training. Nagarajan pointed out that India, too, can follow a similar path to empower its workforce, tackling both unemployment and labour shortages simultaneously. Highlighted the need for central government and state governments to significantly enhance investments in skill training to capitalise on the available opportunities fully. My Musings: Honest and open admission from industry that their current workforce don't have necessary skills to meet global market requirements . Many of us know how outdated current workforce across sectors in the country as there was zero focus to upskill , train the workforce over last 2 decades. They have to hire the freshers who have skills needed which will compliment the skills of existing workforce. Without addressing the real issue, industry is always pointing out fingers to freshers saying they dont have skills Who will audit the skills of workforce in the industry corridors as all are seeking funds from govts to skill workforce. Govts shouldn't allocate any budgets to industry unless workplace skills are audited, assessed and skill maturity levels are shared in the public domain. When experienced workforce dont have the skills, how can "industry ready skills" are expected from freshers. Infact freshers have certain skills which businesses need , customers look for and which are not available with existing workforce in industry corridors. Infact govt must ask industry associations to get skills study done at industry level and submit the same to government . Unlocking Business Potential on the Highway 🛣️🚀 Case Study: Maximizing Ice Cream Sales in Dausa Last year, the newly inaugurated Delhi-Mumbai Expressway, passing close to Dausa (just 60 km from Jaipur), created a golden opportunity for businesses, especially with the development of rest areas along the highway. Our Dausa distributor decided to capitalize on this by investing in Ice Cream Deep Freezers at rest stops near Jaipur and Delhi. The Challenge: Despite placing the freezers and increasing visibility at these outlets, sales of Amul Ice Cream were not meeting expectations. Our distributor was puzzled, and I was confident about the sales potential. Taking Action: To diagnose the issue, I took a trip to the highway. Here’s what I discovered: Visibility Issue: The Amul branding was placed on top of the outlets, akin to typical city stores. However, on a fast-moving highway, this wasn’t effective. By the time drivers noticed the signage, they had already passed the outlet. The Solution: Strategic Visibility: We relocated the visibility signage to be roadside, making it noticeable from a distance of around ½ km. This gave travelers ample time to decide and plan a stop. The Result: Within a week to ten days of implementing this change, Amul Ice Cream sales saw a significant uptick, validating our strategy. Key Learnings: Right Product, Right Place, Right Quantity, Right Time is crucial, but so is the Right Visibility Location. Sales Diagnosis: A good salesperson must be adept at identifying issues and taking corrective actions swiftly. Takeaway: In business, especially in sales, sometimes small tweaks can make a big difference.
