DISA Expands Thunderdome Zero Trust Program Deployment; Brian Hermann, Quoted. ExecutiveGov discusses the Defense Information Systems Agency's (DISA) expansion of the Thunderdome zero trust program. "If the U.S. ever goes to war with a major adversary, one of the first waves of cyberattacks will likely target infrastructure that rarely comes up in discussions about digital threats: railroads. Americans understand that power, water and healthcare systems face constant and sometimes sophisticated hacks from foreign governments and criminal gangs. Why it matters: U.S. Railroads are Vulnerable to Cyberattacks: Though often overlooked in cybersecurity dialogues, the U.S. rail system faces critical vulnerabilities to cyberattacks which could have disastrous implications ranging from mass casualties to significant economic repercussions. Despite recent progress in cybersecurity measures and increased regulation, experts suggest that the rail industry is still lagging behind other major infrastructure sectors in terms of understanding the severity of the threats it faces and marshaling resources accordingly. Impact of Cyberattacks on Railroads: Successful cyberattacks on rail infrastructure could result in significant property damage, potentially fatal accidents, and could stall economic activities by freezing movement of freight like coal and live chickens that power the U.S. economy. In scenarios of conflict, the disruption of rail networks could impede the U.S.'s capacity to mobilize its troops and supplies, underlining the critical need to mitigate these risks and secure the rail systems. TSA's Cybersecurity Regulations for Railroads: In an effort to fortify U.S. rail networks against cyberattacks, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has issued the first-ever federal cybersecurity regulations for railroads in 2022. These regulations mandate the implementation of basic security measures and the reporting of incidents.
