This article, along with the Association of National Advertisers' new guidelines, excites me because "trust" is what PR builds. The credibility and insights that come from earned media coverage of your business or service continues to have unmatched value and brands will need it now more than ever. My head is buzzing following yesterday's excellent symposium from Trust In Media Cooperative and Information Professionals Association on "Information Quality in the Age of Generative AI." Thanks to Ellen McCarthy and Brian Murphy for the invitation to speak - had fun comparing notes on disinformation's impact on crisis communications with David Acosta, Sharon Russell and David Kaufman. After a full day of other thought-provoking panels, a few stand-out takeaways for me: - "We're at the end of the era of one set of facts." - Sue Gordon - "We're still treating information like it's the age of the pony express," and assuming that all information should be treated with the same level of seriousness. - Sue Gordon - "You don't become a hero by telling someone you're not the villain." Government needs to become more trustworthy, start remembering who it is supposed to serve and stop talking to itself. - People are drowning in data and opinions and increasingly can't figure out what's true any more. - We need to approach disinformation problems as multi-channel and multi-modal from the outset to understand the true picture. - We cannot underestimate the importance of media (and information manipulation) literacy. The countries that are most resilient to manipulation are those that are doing the best job in this area. Hat tip to Michelle Ciulla Lipkin of the National Association for Media Literacy Education her outstanding reflections in this area. - When it comes to the role of AI in disinformation, the true threat is manipulation. Seb Joseph over at Digiday highlights a few publishers that are hiring for the "head of consent" role. I'm a big believer that privacy can be a significant competitive advantage for advertisers and publishers that put consumer trust first. As Seb writes (referring to the head of consent at two UK companies), "... both roles aim to make the consent management platform more than just a compliance checkbox, and turn it into a cornerstone of their businesses." Companies that are privileged enough to be trusted by their customers will enjoy the economic benefits of deep consumer knowledge and the ability to respectfully turn that knowledge into a competitive advantage. I'm optimistic that more publishers and advertisers will embrace privacy and data protection not only because compliance requirements dictate it, but because they'll win in the market as a result.

What did our Mid-Year Conference Manager Survey say about elections, AI and conference activity? 🎭 Avoiding the drama –13% of respondents said that they were avoiding sessions that focused on the U.S. Presidential election, but a quarter of all respondents said that they were moving the location of their flagship event to avoid the election. 🛫 Moving around & Hopping the pond – 43% of respondents said that they were changing the dates and location of their flagship events this year. Several added new geographic markets. 🦾 AI case studies wanted – 69% of conference managers responded that, so far in 2024, demand for AI content is greater than last year. BUT… there is a preference for AI case studies instead of sessions discussing the general impact of AI. Google’s new AI disclosure feature can impact customer trust and help to maintain credibility in search and advertising. Google will soon start identifying when content in search and ad results is generated by AI — if you know where to look. In a Sep. 17 blog post, the tech giant announced that, in the coming months, metadata in search, images, and ads will indicate whether an image was photographed with a camera, edited in Photoshop, or created with AI. While most groups are exclusive to IAB members, a few are open to non-members.
