Holtec International has secured a $1.52 billion DOE loan to restart the Palisades Nuclear Power Plant, marking a major step in revitalizing the domestic nuclear industry. Scheduled to be back online by late 2025, Palisades will provide 800 MW of clean, carbon-free energy, boosting Michigan’s clean energy goals. This project will create 600 permanent jobs and lays the groundwork for future nuclear innovations, including Holtec's SMR-300 reactors. More exciting news in CA! The California Energy Commission has adopted a strategic plan required by AB 525 that puts California on track to add 25 GW of offshore wind to the grid by 2045, creating thousands of jobs and enhancing energy independence in the process. The plan demonstrates real leadership, with targets that reflect the scale of California’s energy needs and climate goals. I want to acknowledge and thank the CEC and the many agencies, Tribal Nations and stakeholders who contributed to developing this plan. Offshore wind projects like RWE's Canopy Offshore Wind hold immense promise for California, and this is the collaboration needed in the years to come as we work together to develop this new source of reliable, clean energy.

The technology for this fascinates me. More efficient and safer nuclear is on the horizon. This technology also minimizes outage periods, creates jobs, reduces carbon emissions and increases reliability.

A hybrid gas turbine with battery, such as the Hybrid Enhanced Gas Turbine (Hybrid EGT) developed by Southern California Edison (SCE) in collaboration with General Electric (GE) and Wellhead Power Solutions, combines a gas turbine with a lithium-ion battery energy storage system. This configuration allows for immediate energy supply to the grid, providing backup power while the gas turbine ramps up to full operation. The battery is recharged when the gas turbine is in use . The primary benefits of this hybrid system include improved reliability, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and cost savings. The system significantly cuts down on the number of times the gas turbine needs to be restarted, reducing emissions by up to 60% and saving approximately 2 million gallons of water annually. Additionally, it supports the integration of renewable energy sources by offering quick-start capabilities that stabilize the grid during fluctuations in solar and wind power availability . As someone working in the US power market while closely following the European (and Spanish) markets, I admire how both California and the US have laid the groundwork for energy storage deployment. Industry stakeholders have been willing to develop and deploy storage projects, fully accepting the teething problems that come with a new industry. In Europe, however, BESS deployment is still far behind, often hindered by regulatory and administrative barriers, as well as risk aversion among stakeholders. I’m certain that embracing challenges and learning from them is not only part of the game, but the only way to achieve innovation and leadership. We all know energy storage is essential to increase the penetration of renewables in the energy mix, and California didn’t hesitate to tackle the energy pricing issue head-on. #EnergyStorage #California #RenewableEnergy #Innovation #EnergyTransition #BESS

 During an oversight hearing on California’s electric grid August 6, the chairman of the Senate’s energy and utilities committee had this to say: “We find ourselves here today with these challenges [energy affordability and reliability] because our legislation has been more aspirational than practical. Consumers are feeling this and we need to be more practical in what we’re trying to do.” It seems that California's headlong rush to renewable energy sources, touted as being cheaper and more reliable, are anything but that.
