Achieving health equity requires intentional strategies and collaborative efforts from all corners of the healthcare system. A new report from the American Hospital Association, the Black Directors Health Equity Agenda, and The Health Management Academy highlights how health systems across the country are making meaningful progress toward a more inclusive and equitable healthcare ecosystem. Through interviews with healthcare executives and board members, the report revealed key strategies for advancing health equity, including: 1. 𝐏𝐫𝐢𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐳𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐢𝐧 𝐁𝐨𝐚𝐫𝐝 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐫𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Diverse boards are better positioned to address social drivers of health and create more equitable healthcare outcomes. 2. 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐚𝐭𝐚-𝐃𝐫𝐢𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐒𝐭𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬: Data collection is imperative for identifying health disparities and tracking the progress of equity initiatives. 3. 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬: Collaboration with local organizations is essential for addressing social drivers of health. 4. 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐦𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐜𝐞 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥𝐨𝐩𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭: Building a diverse healthcare workforce that mirrors the community it serves and provides culturally competent care. 5. 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐃𝐄&𝐈 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐄𝐟𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐬: Aligning diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) teams with health equity goals ensures that health systems are addressing the needs of their patient populations. Extending postpartum coverage under Medicaid is a crucial step forward in addressing maternal mortality and supporting pregnant women during a vulnerable period. However, it's important to recognize that this policy change comes with trade-offs, including potential impacts on Medicaid eligibility for pregnant individuals. While access to healthcare insurance is vital, it's just one piece of the puzzle. The maternal health crisis demands a holistic approach that tackles systemic issues beyond coverage, such as access to comprehensive prenatal care and support services. 🌟 Attended a vital virtual maternal health summit hosted by Josh Gottheimer, bringing together healthcare providers, state agencies, and local advocates to discuss improvements in maternal health outcomes. The summit began with a message from New Jersey’s First Lady Tammy Murphy, highlighting New Jersey's progress in addressing maternal health. Since 2019, the state has improved rankings significantly, moving from the 47th in maternal deaths to a more favorable position while investing millions in resources for pregnant and new mothers. Some of the key statistics discussed included: 👉🏽Over 600 women die annually in the U.S. from pregnancy-related causes. 👉🏽Black mothers are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related issues than White mothers, with the disparity in New Jersey being even greater. 👉🏽Congressman Gottheimer emphasized the importance of the Momnibus, a comprehensive package of 13 bills aimed at tackling the maternal health crisis. He called for swift action to pass this legislation and urged ongoing focus on maternal health issues. Together, we can ensure safer and healthier outcomes for mothers and their families across our nation #maternalhealth
