#PeakSports: The NBA Has Maxed Out; Owner Promotes Tequila I just watched this clip of the current #BostonCeltics governor (the new PC term for lead owner of a team) Wyc Grousbeck on #CNBC. Funny thing I learned, he's sold over 2 million bottles of his own tequila. Also, in the interview, he said his family is simply doing some estate planning and they want out of Celtics ownership. As I intimated last week, while it's very plausible estate planning is a driving force behind them deciding to sell the team, people do not sell assets they think are growing at massive rates—especially when there's little downside like there is in sports. But the Celtics ownership IS selling. That likely means they don't see this franchise 10x'ing anytime soon. And they're right. Do you know why? The NBA has maxed out its media rights. They will never see more money (inflation-adjusted) for their U.S. rights than what they're getting in this 11-year, $76B deal that runs from 2025 to 2036. In the deal, as reported by The Wall Street Journal, new partner #NBC is paying $2.5m per game for 100 NBA games a year. That's $2.5B a year on average. For the sake of argument, let's assume NBC can make that money up through ads, streaming subs, and paying TNT a whole lot less money on the Comcast side! 😅 But how on Earth will NBC be able to offer more money in 2036? The cable bundle is currently dropping 8% YoY. SVOD subscriptions in the U.S. are moderating. There aren't more eyeballs to go after in our flatlining population. Even if there were more eyeballs to be had, Gen Z and Gen Alpha don't seem to care much for sports. If you thought giving it to them for free via streaming and/or on-demand might work, the best premium seller of digital ads, Hulu, is seeing its ad revenue decline. Or if you believe vMVPDs like YouTubeTV are the answer, think again. They just saw their subs dip for the first time as NFL Sunday Ticket users churned out as soon as the NFL season was over. And if the NBA was relying on more Big Tech companies coming into the market to save them, it's unlikely that'll be the case. With the move towards consolidation, the intense Big Tech battles they've been prognosticating have already materialized. By 2036, you'll probably have 3 bidders interested in sports, all of whom will have commoditized sports on their platforms by then. Of course, the NBA could grow in other ways, but only internationally with either more fans, or more international investment. But the odds of either of those options benefiting U.S. viewers, U.S. media companies, or even team owners are low. This is why after watching this interview, I can see why Wyc appears more excited about his rising tequila brand than he is about further owning the Celtics!

When you genuinely care for your customers, this care will be revealed on the long term. Pick wisely the type of leader you choose to become. Long term thinking is more valuable than short term benefit, unless you aren’t do it for the right reasons.

Celebrating 15 Years of CYACYL Fifteen years ago on July 11, 2009, the Change Your Attitude … Change Your Life radio show premiered on a local New Jersey radio station. When I had the idea for a radio show, it was by all accounts a ridiculous one. I was a middle-aged, stay at home mother from a small town who had spent the prior 17 years primarily caring for my family. I had no radio experience. I had no media production knowledge. I had no dreams or goals for doing this type of work. It was nothing I had ever aspired to do. It was simply an idea that popped into my head and for some unknown reason, I ran with it. Starting out was extremely challenging. In the beginning I was trying to navigate the loss of my mother and sister (who died five months apart), the end of my 23-year marriage (which came in between the deaths), and financially providing for myself and my kids, with no safety net. I had no idea how to successfully monetize and run a company. I was in over my head. But again, for some unknown reason, I ran with it. As time passed and I got stronger, I started to figure out how to get by, mostly by the seat of my pants. I learned many valuable lessons the hard way. But, after trusting some of the wrong people and getting taken advantage of from opportunists, I slowly began to get the hang of it. For most of my life I limited myself so I had no idea just how creative I could be. You talk about thinking outside the box, I didn’t even know there was a box. I did things that might make a person with an MBA cringe, but my intuition worked and everything began to click. Slowly and methodically, I built a brand, grew a radio show and podcast, and worked with some of the most incredible people you can imagine. When I look over the list of changemakers I have had the opportunity to meet and interview, it blows my mind. It’s so surreal that it often feels like someone else is doing it. Pictured are just a few of the more than 1600 interviews I've conducted. Over the course of the past 15 years, I have seen companies come and go. And when I think about that, I wonder what I did that has enabled me to not only survive, but to thrive. I wonder how I figured it out and why I’m still standing. The greatest lesson I have learned is to never let anyone, even yourself, stop you from acting on an idea or dream. Sometimes the ideas that are the seemingly most ridiculous, turn out to be something truly amazing. And if you forget that, remember my story Thank you to everyone who has believed in me and cheered me on when I didn’t think I could go any further. You kept me motivated, you lifted me, and you loved me. I could not have done it without you. They say it takes a village to raise a child, well, it takes a village to run a business. Anyone who forgets that will certainly encounter trouble. Here’s to another 15 years!! (I’m getting older and may have to shorten the years in that toast one day! LOL)

The only financial advice I received from my single mom growing up was, “if you feel like you don’t have any money, the best thing for you to do is spend more”. This lead to her refinancing our little house 3 times, many nights without power or food and filing for two bankruptcies. But she did go on many cruises with my stepdad and she had a trunk full of fake diamonds from the swap meet, which were all things that made her very happy. Watching these sudden windfalls and downfalls made me incredibly fearful of money. I started working at 13, if I wanted anything extra, or really anything, it was up to me to buy it. I worked illegally at a few jobs, hustling outside of school and working in dry cleaners, (horrible it’s so hot), Bakeries, (great and I love a bread slicer), movie rental places, (fun and watching guys rent porn from someone not even old enough to technically watch it, amazing), cashier at a vegetarian grocer (Patchouli for days) and then waiting tables in the restaurant in the back. (Loved it. I always said I would still be a waitress if it paid more) Whatever it took I was willing to do it. Because of money and family drama I could not go to college. So I kept working. I lived in this place where I always felt like if I faltered at all, I would be broke and destitute. That pressure mounts when you are responsible for your own company, employees, overhead, children ..and you also take care of your mother. I never wanted to spend a penny unless I instinctually knew it could generate income. I took every job. During my wedding, I was working. In the hospital, I was working. There was no maternity leave. There was no vacation and really it was all self inflicted. The world wouldn’t end if I took a few days off. But I thought MY world would end. I finally took some time off, and nothing ended. Everything kept going forward, and I finally realized what my mom was saying. Don’t be afraid of money. It comes and it goes, and everything just keeps on moving. When I let go of the pressure I put on myself, I made so much more. So buy those diamonds at the swap meet, sweetheart. Cause money shouldn’t always stress you out, it can also bring you a little happiness. #imprint #imprints #financialadvice #womenowned #money #happiness

Yesterday, Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Laurie sold two minority stakes in the team. Here's a quick breakdown of the deal: • The stakes will be purchased by Ed Peskowitz and Susan Kim pending NFL owner approval • Ed Peskowitz is the founder of United Communications Group and former co-owner of the Atlanta Hawks • Susan Kim is the chairman of the board of semiconductor company Amkor Technology • Peskowitz will take a 4.75% stake through a trust led by his children, Zachary Peskowitz and Olivia Suter, and Kim will buy 3.25% through a trust she created for her children A few additional interesting facts: ➊ This deal values the Eagles as the NFL’s second-most valuable team behind the Cowboys, according to Forbes’ recent rankings ➋ The Eagles $8.1B valuation represents a multiple of roughly 11-12 times revenue ➌ Owner Jeffrey Lurie bought control of the team in 1994 for $195M which today is a 4000%+ increase in value It's been a few months since the NFL approved private equity investment and we're starting to see the bidding for minority stakes heat up throughout the league. 2025 is gearing up to be a very interesting year for teams across the globe.
