Our English teachers run any suspicious work through software that detects the use of AI, but honestly it is usually obvious to teachers,” said Stephen Whiteley, a recently retired York Suburban High School science teacher who taught for 34 years.

Lack of education accounts for a great deal of abject poverty in the world. Basic needs such as food, clothing and shelter dominate the daily thoughts of those caught in destitute circumstances. The short-term goal of survival takes precedence over the long-term goal of starting a business.

In that vein, providing microcredit loans proves disastrous when unaccompanied by guidance on creating sustainable value. Two examples where such systems failed include South Africa, where self-employment income fell more than 11 percent annually over a period of six years, and Bangladesh, where some indebted resorted to selling their bodily organs.

However, incorporating an educational component into the lending system makes a marked difference. Nobel Prize winner and microcredit founder Muhammad Yunus taught millions of Bengali people how to leverage their potential to become successful entrepreneurs. He established Grameen Bank to provide loans totaling more than $15 billion, of which $14 billion has been paid back, according to its May 2014 statement.

Getting a college degree or certificate can be so indispensable that families, students and society often pay not only for what opens doors and fosters growth, but also for many costs that may be incidental to this. Every student should create a plan when financing his education; both similar to and different from a traditional business plan. It is similar in that it asks students to think through how they will bring in income after they have finished school to pay back their loans. It is different in that it takes changes in a student's preferences and prospects heavily into account. Instead of asking students to make fixed projections around their futures, they ought to take stock of the available paths forward at each stage of their education and their careers, and make adjustments accordingly.

(Disruptive innovation is Harvard Business School professor Clay Christensen's term for innovations that transform markets.) This might sound like common sense, to get out ahead of the curve when the world is changing. But businesses that are good at doing anticipatory disruption are few and far between.

Corporations work hard to set and correct course, but typically focus on the waves they already see others paddling toward. Meanwhile, many entrepreneurs are still expected to present static business plans that lay out a single set of actions and projected outcomes, based on a scenario they extend five years out. Investors and entrepreneurs talk about pivoting, but for the most part this is reactive pivoting. Contingency plans are made, of course, but they tend to be reserved for emergencies.
