I always love reading the annual Voice of the Online Learner report that Risepoint produces. The two things that stuck out to me most were 1). location still matters, but the number of learners choosing an institution within 100 miles from where they live is down (57% this year vs. 70% last year) - which hints that folks are prioritizing things like quality and affordability over location. And 2). only 21% of respondents noted using employer tuition assistance as their funding mechanism - we can do so much better (and InStride can help)! Fostering democracy? Not exactly the mission I had in mind getting into higher ed tech. But when I joined The Chronicle of Higher Education's webinar on First-Year Student Success last week, I was amazed to see so many attendees asking about strategies for getting out the vote this fall with first-year students. Since November is less than 5 months away, here are 5 ideas that anyone can use to get out the vote with Mongoose's Cadence (or whichever messaging tool you have): 1. 🎂 DOB < 11/6/06 (Now) - Remind them they can vote this year with a link to details, whether or not they're enrolled with you yet! 2. Absentee Info Poll❓(Sep) - Find students to follow up with information on requesting absentee ballots from home with a quick "Yes/No" Smart Message 3. ^Send the Nos an ⚡️auto-reply with more details on getting registered to vote/voting locally! 4. 🏅Challenge Stats (Nov) - Send out a blast text the morning of Election Day to let everyone where to go to get their "I voted" pin to help set a new campus record. 5. It's Not Too Late! (Nov) - ⏰ Schedule a text to go out on election day in the late afternoon reminding them that polls are still open! 6. BONUS - Stuck on the message? 🪄Ask your AI Assistant to add some ✨ splash to make it stick out to your students. If you build it, they will come...? Will they? It depends. I've been in #Education and #EdTech for 15 years. And honestly, the ways companies and districts/schools connect hasn't changed much. (Side note: can we fix this?) What I do know: some #marketing tools remain at the top of my list. #SEO is one of them. We can build the most beautiful website with the most thoughtful content, but if no one can find the site... well... you know the rest. But it's not easy. It's not hard, but it's not easy. It takes a focused approach on your site (thank you to tools like HubSpot!) and a clear approach to external sites with good reputations to drive traffic. And it takes someone on your marketing team to stay on top of it and create content that not only adds value, but is in line with SEO best practices (I happen to have one of the best Connie Warren 😉) Check out the article in the comments - some interesting things happening in SEO in the time of AI.

'Silver' learners are not a silver bullet for higher education. We'll hear more about #highereducation needing to pivot to adult and continuing learners as we deal with the #enrollmentcliff. Adult learners are a HUGE opportunity for institutions, but the danger is that higher ed will see this as another 'silver bullet' that will magically paper over weak business models. We've seen this with online education, international students, etc. And for some institutions, these endeavors are great mission fits and financial saviors. For most, however, they're just "hope-ium" for boards and leaders looking for a fast answer. A small, private residential SLAC in a rural area, for example, isn't going to balance its budgets on adult learners. Their structural costs and infrastructure just don't align, and the revenue models are just too different. (note that the author of this piece is at Arizona State) What do you think? I listened to a podcast this week in which a VP of Student Affairs spoke about résumé creation and interview skills (delivered via Career Services) as being key for graduates to get a job. Those are obviously important facets of a job search. However, if higher education doesn't start embedding ways for students to showcase the skills and competencies that are learned during a student's college experience, having a pretty résumé or being able to answer questions won't matter. Why? Because there are thousands of resumes, and an interview only happens if you are selected for one. Most students enroll in a higher education degree/credential program to enhance their career possibilities. Institutions need to re-tool their Student Affairs / Career Services shops to focus on the direct connections between learning, skills, and employability. Those verified pathways are what matter...immensely. And that's what students are paying for. An additional thought/update: Career Services departments should be among the most funded and innovative areas within a university. They are literally carrying the entire institution in the sense that 99.90% of students enroll because of the direct connection between higher education and careers.

Solid advice. We always advise clients to plan ahead and build robust and dynamic collaborations with funding organizations and other agencies before opportunities are announced. It is so much easier to leverage relationships and work on the front end to have funding fit your organizational needs, rather than the other way around.
