UAM is set to offer an esports track in the Bachelor of Science in health and physical education degree beginning in the spring semester of 2025. The Bachelor of Science in health and physical education degree is a 120-credit-hour program of study that has historically provided a broad knowledge of the discipline. The new esports track, comprised of 30 credit hours, will be one of three track options offered within the degree, alongside the coaching track and sports administration track. The esports track will include three newly developed courses, in addition to seven existing ones, covering topics such as economics, entrepreneurship, esports, financial accounting, leadership, management, marketing and sports management, along with an internship in esports. This track aims to equip students with a solid foundation in both the business and coaching aspects of esports. Dr. Kim Level, dean of the School of Education at UAM, expressed enthusiasm about the new track, stating, “We are thrilled to introduce the new esports track within our Bachelor of Science in health and physical education degree program. Given the rapid growth of the esports industry, we believe this will be a significant draw for prospective students. The UAM Esports team successfully recruited numerous players, and it’s essential that we provide an avenue for students at UAM who are interested in pursuing esports as a career to enhance their marketability in the workforce. We are committed to being innovative to attract students, and this new track represents an exciting opportunity for UAM students that we hope will be well received.” Founded in 2023, UAM Esports has seen significant growth in the fall semester, tripling its roster and winning its first championship title in its National Association of Collegiate Esports (NACE) division. Bryan Fendley, director of UAM Esports, noted, “Last year, we started with just six students, and now we have 19. We're especially excited to have recruited our first female players. We've also drawn interest from semi-pro players, including some from abroad. Adding a degree path focused on esports will only accelerate this growth. It will equip students with the skills they need to succeed in this rapidly growing industry. It's a win-win for both our competitive program and the students looking to build a career in esports.” For the full story, visit UAM News, https://lnkd.in/g_-9_b76

It's time for the NBA to address the issue of the take foul ruining late-game excitement. - https://lnkd.in/dqPV89rs On Monday night, Oklahoma City Thunder center Chet Holmgren made two free throws with 9.4 seconds left in Game 4 against the Dallas Mavericks. They were great marks, which brought the Thunder closer to tying the series. The Mavericks had no timeouts left. They had to run down the field to get back into the game. At that moment, fans should have been wondering if they were about to witness an iconic playoff moment. Will Luka Dončić shake off a difficult night and lift his team? Would Kyrie Irving add to his formidable list of playoff highlights? Would Shai Gilgeous-Alexander strip someone in the backcourt, capping a big night for him? Would Holmgren get to the 3-point arc with a switch and send a shot into Dallas' night? Instead, when the Mavericks moved the ball to create a good look, Gilgeous-Alexander intentionally fouled PJ Washington. The Thunder led by three points. It was the right decision. Giving up a maximum of two points when they led by three made sense with so little time left. The Dallas forward split a pair of free throws with 3.2 seconds left, Gilgeous-Alexander hit both at the other end and that was it. Thunder Triumph. Quite anticlimactic, right? (Keynote USA/Getty Images) Casual NBA viewers often criticize game endings for taking too long. Those complaints are justified and the league has addressed them in part. Before the 2017-18 season, the NBA changed its rules to limit teams to two timeouts in the final three minutes of games instead of three timeouts in the final two minutes, as was previously the case. Well, here's another problem: In the situation the Thunder faced on Monday night, teams are not encouraged to defend without fouling. Free throws are among the least interesting and most time-consuming parts of basketball, and the nature of the rule is leading to more of them, not less. Worst of all, it's robbing viewers of potentially iconic moments. So, let's change the rules. Here are two proposals. 1. If your opponent is in the bonus and you are winning by three points or more and you foul them beyond the 3-point arc, your opponent gets three free throws. 2. In the same scenario, there is an extension of the current “take foul” rule, where the team trailing or receiving the foul gets a free throw and automatic possession. This is my preferred option. It may seem counterintuitive to use the threat of more free throws to reduce the number of free throws at the end of a game, but the free throw is the most efficient shot in the game. In the first proposal, a team would give the opponent a chance to tie the game at the free-throw line. In the second, you could create a scenario where the opponent could win with a made free throw followed by a 3 (or tie it with a made free throw and a 2). No team will purposely pursue ...

NFL Reports Surge in Stadium Drone Incursions as Congress Weighs Enhanced Security Powers The National Football League revealed that unauthorized drone flights over stadiums jumped to 2,845 incidents in 2023, up from 2,537 in 2022, as the league joins federal agencies in pushing Congress to expand drone detection and mitigation authorities, reports Reuters. The mounting pressure for legislative action comes amid growing concerns about drone-related security threats at major sporting events, critical infrastructure, and sensitive government facilities. Current regulations prohibit drone operations within a three-mile radius and up to 3,000 feet above major U.S. sporting venues during events, but enforcement capabilities remain limited. NFL Security Chief Cathy Lanier's message to Congress is unequivocal: "The time to act to keep fans safe is now." The urgency reflects broader concerns about the increasing accessibility of drone technology and its potential misuse for malicious purposes. The proposed legislation would significantly expand federal counter-drone coverage beyond its current scope. Key beneficiaries would include airports, power plants, oil refineries, chemical facilities, and high-risk prisoner transport operations. Perhaps most significantly, the bill would extend drone detection and mitigation authorities to state and local law enforcement agencies, while allowing critical infrastructure operators to deploy federally approved drone detection systems. Federal agencies are highlighting serious vulnerabilities under the current framework. In joint testimony, the FBI and Justice Department emphasized that even sensitive federal facilities like CIA headquarters remain exposed to potential foreign intelligence collection and physical attacks due to gaps in legal authority. The Department of Homeland Security provided compelling evidence of the scale of the drone threat, reporting over 6,900 drone flights near the Southwest border in just a six-week period. These incidents, according to DHS, indicate "highly organized" illicit cross-border drone activities. This push for expanded authorities builds on previous legislative efforts. In 2018, Congress granted the Justice Department and Department of Homeland Security limited powers to disable or destroy threatening drones. However, federal officials argue these provisions fall short of addressing current security challenges. The White House has backed this initiative since 2022, joining forces with major sports leagues including the NFL and MLB. These organizations have consistently warned that without enhanced detection and mitigation capabilities, venues ranging from stadiums to airports face "substantial risk from malicious and unauthorized drone operation." The current situation highlights the complex balance between promoting legitimate drone use while protecting public safety and critical infrastructure. As drone incidents continue to rise, the pressure for comprehensive fed...
