Working in the restaurant business taught me invaluable lessons I now use daily as a CSM. Here’s how my bartending days prepared me for my CSM role at Yotpo: 1. 𝐂𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐫 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐢𝐬 𝐄𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐲𝐭𝐡𝐢𝐧𝐠: Whether mixing the perfect cocktail or delivering a seamless software experience, happy customers keep coming back. 2. 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐖𝐢𝐧𝐬: Remembering a regular’s favorite drink? Now, I tailor solutions to fit each client’s unique needs. 3. 𝐓𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐋𝐨𝐲𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐲: Handling complaints with empathy and grace turns frustrated customers into loyal advocates. 4. 𝐁𝐮𝐢𝐥𝐝𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐋𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩𝐬: Regular patrons become loyal SaaS clients. Trust and consistency are key. 5. 𝐌𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐔𝐩𝐬𝐞𝐥𝐥: Suggesting a new cocktail or a valuable feature—it's all about adding value. 6. 𝐓𝐞𝐚𝐦𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤 𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐃𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐦 𝐖𝐨𝐫𝐤: Whether behind the bar or in the office, seamless coordination and communication are essential. I loved working in the restaurant business, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐢𝐭 𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐧𝐬 𝐨𝐮𝐭 𝐈 𝐧𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐫 𝐫𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐥𝐞𝐟𝐭.

How John overcame the insanely competitive CSM job market (and got a remote role) John was an experienced CSM from Miami, handled a huge portfolio of clients, and loved customers. BUT He was laid off in July 2023 (like countless others) -Struggling to get any interviews himself -Sick of networking not working -Seeing his savings running low -Tired of manually applying He reached out in December 2023. So we got a sky full of lighters and began the FIRE framework 🔥 We: 1. Had a recruiter of 9+ years write a resume, cover letter, and LinkedIn optimization (no ChatGPT, no Upwork, no “career coaches”) 2. Collaborated on final interviews (Uber, AirbnB, Salesforce) 3. Fixed his talk tracks and revenue focused stories 4. Ensured his mindset was back in a good state 5. Used my job boards (updated every 6 hours) 6. Checked in weekly on slack 7. Stopped networking 8. Applied in volume He made it to the final rounds, which is awesome. But we were getting beat every time. This is the brutality of job hunting. But he kept at it (most people give up but not John) 7 months of effort. That’s thousands of hours into: -Applications -Rejections -QBR slides -Company research But he got it. -A CSM job -Fully remote to let him travel again -Peace of mind to be back in the work-force I asked him “what kept you going" and "what was your why" He said 2 things “Talking to you and understanding that it’s a numbers game” “Applying like my life depended on it” This grind for John is done now. But it's very real. And anyone who’s job hunting knows it sucks (I’ve done it twice). So: If you are a CSM who wants help getting through your job hunt and you: Need to land interviews Willing to be coached by others Want to get your confidence back Unable to get that final offer in hand Open to investing in yourself to achieve your goals Think that networking is a waste of time and had 0 results Then DM me the word “goals” and I'll send you the details. Peloton is now offering potential customers the opportunity to rent a Peloton bike for a £99 monthly fee. The new subscription makes the bikes far cheaper to access than their purchase price and opens to door to new customer segments. People who previously found Peloton’s pricing prohibitive can now participate in its fitness ecosystem 🌐 Rental schemes are an ideal solution, especially within Gen Z culture where there's a growing demand for flexibility and mobility, and for whom consumption is about access rather than ownership (McKinsey, 2023) New consumer segments that Peloton can now reach: 💰 Fitness Enthusiasts on a Budget: Individuals who want access to high-quality fitness equipment and classes without the upfront cost. The rental option provides a significantly more affordable way to stay fit. 🛩 Temporary Residents: People who move frequently or have short-term living arrangements. I'm childfree by choice, and these comments are really giving All Lives Matter vibes. If my company is going to reimburse childcare up to $6K in no way would my first thought be "Well I too should receive 6 grand for my own unrelated financial needs." Like if you see a speeding firetruck coming down the street to your neighbor's flaming house are you standing on your (very much not on fire) porch saying "well I want a firetruck to come to me too, where's my firetruck??" (Firefighter videos on WLW TikTok are another story, we all want those, but I digress) I get it. We all have a shit ton of financial needs, some more challenging that others like elder parent care, which can be equally or more expensive. (But also...you don't think folks with kids might...also... have elder parent care? It's not like those are mutually exclusive) Anyway, I realize that argument is basically saying 'we all have something that burdens us, so why not give everyone 6K to ease that burden'. And I get that. Really. I'd love to have a surprise $6K for reimbursements. I've spent nearly that on just our 17 yr old dog alone this year (god help me, this senior grandpaw is gonna live forever). However. I think we need to remember: 1. Yes, having children is a choice, but despite overpopulation it is still a choice we *need* folks (a lot of them) to make in order to have an entire functioning society. Weekly I think about how grateful I am to folks who have kids so that I am able to have the choice not to. 2. In most progressive, modern, and forward thinking societies, childcare is largely and heavily subsidized by the government. The fact that the US has pretty much unequivocally dropped the ball on this does not mean everyone should get an extra lifestyle or hardship bonus. <<< It means employers are doing what they can to pick up the slack on something that should NOT burden parents to the extent that it does. >>> 3. There are many benefits that will never be fully equal across the board. For instance, my company will cover up to $2000 in reimbursements for travel expenses for anyone who needs to travel out of state to access reproductive care that is banned or restricted in their home states. (Which, may I add, is amazing). I'm married to a woman so baring the immaculate conception 2.0, this is likely not a benefit I will ever need unless something pretty terrible happened to me. And if that happened, would folks be saying "Well where's my $2K??" JFC I'd hope not. Or take fertility treatment reimbursements. If you are able to grow a little bean without the help of science and pixie dust, are you gonna go after that money too? I mean some companies offer pet insurance, right? If Patricia in finance has a petting zoo worth of animals (jealous, tbh) and you are still struggling to keep a succulent alive, are you going to demand that you have $50 a month towards something else? Asking for your own $6K is not the progressive flex you think it is
