Check out the latest DTS “Connected Car Entertainment Trends” report which explores the consumption of entertainment in the car with data on how U.S. consumers listen to audio, watch video and play games in-vehicle. While others have lagged behind in terms of sustainability and open ability to repair, Google has become a surprising ally in the fight for a more sustainable consumer electronics future. They provide actual repair solutions, opposed to others like Apple that provide options with redtape and caveats at every turn. While I still question Google’s stance with AdWords blocking all device repair ad capability, their hardware division is an unquestionable force in the right to repair movement. When partners like Google make changes like this that benefit their customers, it creates value. That value will lead to them eroding market share from handset leaders like Apple and Samsung — and we are already seeing it happen at Fruit Fixed.

Magic Leap Inc., the heavily funded mixed reality startup, has reportedly laid off its sales and marketing teams. Bloomberg today cited sources as saying that the restructuring affected about 75 employees. It’s unclear if the job cuts were limited to the sales and marketing departments or also hit other units. According to the report, Magic Leap will provide the departing staffers with two months of severance pay. The company confirmed the job cuts in a statement. “Magic Leap has been evolving our go-to-market approach to better align with market dynamics and emerging opportunities, optimizing how we support our customers and our ecosystem,” a Magic Leap spokesperson told Bloomberg. “As part of this, we have consolidated our frontline engagement to our developer support and care teams.” The job cuts reportedly come amid a major shift in the company’s business strategy. Magic Leap launched in 2010 to develop mixed reality headsets for consumers. According to today’s report, the company will now refocus on licensing the optical technology that underpins its headsets to other organizations.

Sure, smart TVs have changed a lot over the years. But are they optimized to engage viewers? Not always. Smart TV manufacturers are stuck between what they often view as two competing interests: improving users’ entertainment experience or capitalizing on advertising. Many are choosing to prioritize advertising at the expense of the user. It doesn’t have to be this way. Just as the industry accelerates its focus on the power of smart TV advertising, consumers are demonstrating peak advertising tolerance, according to our latest TiVo Video Trends Report. This means they’re willing to watch ads. But they don’t want to wade through irrelevant ones that gum up their viewing experience. It’s possible — and preferable — to balance the consumer experience with advertising priorities through search and recommendation. By placing the consumers’ preferences first, advertising can provide vastly more relevant sponsored ads by sprinkling them into content recommendations.
