You've just received harsh critique on your photography work. How can you manage your emotions effectively?
I actually think, in the professional level, this is probably one of the most important aspects when it comes to evaluating and responding to criticisms. Part of our professional acumen is the ability to discern how relevant such criticisms are to the actual output of the work or the purpose of a work. There are so many noises out there with everyone having a megaphone to broadcast their POV. In 2024, this ability is probably more important than ever.

How can you approach print design projects for clients in different niches?
I found that empathy with the client's perspective is an important criterion to build trust and a sustainable relationship with the clients. Always put yourself in your client's shoes and try to see things from their perspective. Then, take a step back and consider how you can approach the project in a way that is both familiar and novel to the client. Regardless of the niche your client occupies, they will always expect to relate to the final result while also being pleasantly surprised. Striking this balance is challenging but essential. So, building this skillset from day one will be beneficial whether you work within a design firm or for your own practice.

How can digital fashion illustration tools help you save time and money?
The ability to 'undo' actions in digital applications is a critical function that can be easily overlooked. In traditional artistic mediums, any mistake requires time-consuming corrections, which create a sense of apprehension and restrict the flow of creativity. This is not the case in the digital medium, which allows for immediate corrections, enabling illustrators to freely explore their ideas without fear of making irreversible or laborious errors. This simple 'undo' function is not just a convenience but an enabler of creative freedom.

How can digital fashion illustration tools help you save time and money?
The Adobe Suite, especially Photoshop and Illustrator, remains the pinnacle for digital illustration. On iPads, Fresco and Procreate are the main choices. Users of traditional computers rely on Wacom tablets or Cintiqs, with alternatives like the Microsoft Surface and XP-Pen Deco Pro, to create expressive designs. Platforms like Canva and Adobe Express have made design more accessible. AI's ascent introduces tools like Midjourney, Dall-E, and Stable Diffusion. For 3D creation, Blender, Marvelous Designer, and Adobe’s Substance suite are key. In the metaverse, tools like Roblox Studio are crucial. The toolkit for digital fashion illustration is growing, and so is the definition of what it means to be a digital fashion illustrator in 2023.

How do you communicate with clients or printers about dpi and ppi requirements?
To further clarify, PPI is generally most relevant when we're dealing with digital files, whereas DPI is a printer-specific measurement. When someone refers to an image as having '300 DPI', they usually mean that the image has a resolution suitable for high-quality printing, which is often done at 300 DPI. However, in actuality, the image file's size is set to 300 PPI. This value is then interpreted and converted into the printer-specific DPI during the printing process. So, while these terms can seem interchangeable in common usage, for designer, it is good to understand their distinct roles so you can work more effectively with your printing partners and achieve the best, sometimes, more creative outcomes.

Designers - let's hear it. What's your take on the Pantone color of the year for 2025: Mocha Mousse? For starters, I am inspired to get dessert. Design can wait. Now, let's talk about the color itself once that's out of the way. 2024 was all about the soft, warm, peach hue - perfectly titled as Peach Fuzz. Viva Magenta, the 2023 color of the year was bold, strong, and deep. And in 2022, it was an ethereal periwinkle-blue with violet undertones called Veri Peri. Have these colors influenced your design decisions? Will the 2025 color Mocha Mousse inspire your choices for the upcoming year? If you're interested, take a look at Pantone's Past Colors of the Year here: https://lnkd.in/gt9gWjvu

Team SwatchEditor™
When attending shows, use SwatchEditor to send design links to clients or back to the office. You can also send a collection of print designs. This saves sending jpgs and allows you to control your files in a safer way. If you sell the design you can delete it from the link. Sending files this way allows viewers to interact in 3D and view designs on a silk twill as well as on garments, or whatever 3D products you upload. They can play with scale, colour and placement and see how the design will look on folds and pleats. You can place multiple prints on an outfit as well as block colours and scans or photos of knits and weaves, helping inform better buying decisions.

Learn.Share.Repeat. Although I have enjoyed illustrating for decades, it was four years ago I started my #graphicrecording practice. And this was the scenario: a global pandemic, little work available and a general sense of loss. I was introduced to #graphicrecording when I was part of a #branding team and a visualisation of our organisation strategy was required. And I never looked back: this practice conveyed innovation, illustration and service and this resonated with me in every way. So I used all this available time to learn. I read books, learnt new software, watched videos and listened to more TedTalks that anyone should. Oh and podcasts, loads of them. Fortunately in this journey I found the most generous, kind and resilient community. Fast forward to 2024 and I am continuously supporting organisations in finding clarity, growth and success in their future endeavours. I am beyond grateful to my absolute hero Mike Rohde for the opportunity of sharing my experiences in #sketchnotearmy podcast and hopefully helping others in their own journey. And I could not be in better company: shout out to Peter Durand and Kelvy Bird amongst other who mentored me and Ursula Johnston who back in the day asked me for a visualisation of our project. Hope you enjoy the listening! #LiveScribing #Webinar #Sketchnote #Design #Sketch #VisualCommunication #EventScribing #VisualThinking #LiveScribing #VisualEngagement #Collaboration #StakeholderAlignment #Infographic #DesignAgency #Animation #VisionMapping #VisualCommunications #StoryTelling #Creative #Draw #CreativeSessions #Scribers #Events #LiveEvents

Specialty toy and gift stores: what kind of digital assets are most helpful for you? Here’s a little video I did for a lovely independent store that’s trying out my birthday cards. It’s my first attempt at creating this kind of content, and I’d appreciate your feedback so I can be the best biz partner I can bee 😊🐝 #birthdaycards #howcanihelp #digitalassets

WE DO CUSTOM PRINT for brands to create unique uniforms that are specific to the experience they are offering. Here are three important steps: 1/. Get the color right, no, not Pantone. We print our own HEX codes color guides on base fabrics for matching the colors. 2/. Order test prints. 3/. Test the drape with strike-offs, make samples, do wash tests. NOT every designer can do prints. NOT evey print design is appropriate for apparel application. When we do prints, we think about the UX, User Experience. It is always about The Experience. #productdesign #productdevelopment #innovation

The puffer would begin to serve more than its utilitarian purpose in the 1940s, when it was tailored and marketed to the wealthy as an evening layer. The garment was reimagined in the 1970s as an athleisure jacket specifically marketed towards women by designer Norma Kamali. https://lnkd.in/d4FT-PPT. https://lnkd.in/dKwPxR8N. When did puffer jackets come into fashion?1930'sLike these other comparative 'essentials,' the puffer jacket in its various forms – ankle grazing and oversized, fitted and cropped – has peaked and troughed in popularity since its birth in the early 1930's, reclaimed by different cultures and social classes.https://https://lnkd.in/deCxa7wi. Are puffer jackets out of style? However, after market saturation in 2022, the power of the puffer may be waning. Across the whole fashion market, new arrivals peaked in 2022, falling 25 per cent for 2023 and down 18 per cent versus 2021. Sales activity has also followed a similar trajectory, with sell-outs peaking in 2022 and down 27 per cent since. Are puffer jackets ugly? They are pretty damn ugly. The nicer ones that are less bulky don't look too bad but some of them look like a stack of tires. https://lnkd.in/dfnABRaM

Being a “hired gun” for other apparel brands is: ✅Rad ✅Exciting ✅Expansive ✅Imperative ✅Nothing new ✅A growth opportunity ✅Cross pollination at its finest. MORE important is making sure the Studio 669 frequency/vibration does not change. NO MATTER who I am (or you) working for/with.. stay true. 🎯Because There’s nothing worse than a design that’s equivalent to a slice of wet toast at the bottom of your sink. It’s lifeless---it’s worthless… you can’t discount it enough~~ It’s like *that Uncle that won’t leave the party long after it’s over. 📢PLEASE LEAVE! Substandard- 🎯Is a DISSERVICE to all your hard work building your brand. 🎯Is a DISSERVICE to the creative themselves that sold out along the way. ✅Organizations like BLIPSHIFT “get it”… and they VAPORIZE their inventory in the process. Their brand is NEXT LEVEL, making them very relevant in a scene where people pay for (and get) garbage design and quality. Playing the long game is just that. It’s understanding that old saying: 🎯"You NEVER have a second chance to make a first impression.” What a blast working with BLIPSHIFT, *sprinkling GO FAST into their mix. P.S. This video was a “1 and done”… it could be staged and scripted----but then authenticity flies out that silly window (-: I’m Scott Fisk and I look forward to chatting with you when you’re ready to pour high octane over your next event, brand or organization.

If you can look at a design and can tell what tool the designer used to create it, the designer picked the wrong tool. Or, the designer isn't very good at using that tool This is my problem with the majority of "footwear design" you see on social media (and those recent Nike concepts). It's unwearable, impossible spaceship shoes that only look the way they do because of the tools used to make them. The tool is not enabling design, it's limiting it. That's not good design. --- I’m the owner of The Directive Collective footwear design consultancy. We make great footwear, not just great sketches. #design #footwear #footweardesign

TITEL: pattern recognition DATE: 2024 MEDIUM: various commercial patterns, perspex and framing off cuts SIZE: various The artwork in this space has been a collaborative project between artist and fashion designer Roman Handt and curator Claudia Bentel. We set out to shift the approach to the workspace by using design and art to thread themes of sustainability from shared resources and sharing skill sets, to repurposing every-day objects. Through the use of familiar symbols of consumerism, such as patterns and designs found in mainstream fashion, we challenge viewers to reconsider their relationship with clothing and the way they engage with the fashion industry. By subverting these patterns and presenting them in a new context, we invite audiences to reflect on the hidden costs of fast fashion: exploitation of labor, environmental degradation, and the perpetuation of unsustainable consumption practices. As a jewelry designer and business owner, I've always had the JCK Show on my bucket list, and the excitement is building as the dates draw closer. Trade shows like JCK offer invaluable opportunities to gain insights into the latest products, technologies, and trends shaping the industry. They can inspire innovation, provide networking opportunities, and offer a chance to learn from industry leaders. Attending workshops, seminars, and keynote speeches can keep you informed about the latest best practices and emerging trends. Walking the floor and engaging in conversations can help you understand your brand's strengths and areas for improvement. You can also observe successful sales pitches and marketing tactics and learn what resonates with customers to apply it to your own sales efforts. Not only can trade shows help build relationships with potential partners, suppliers, and customers, but they also provide an opportunity to meet with multiple suppliers and service providers in one place. This can help you compare their offerings, negotiate better deals, and establish relationships with reliable partners. Finally, attending major trade shows like JCK signals to your industry peers and customers that your company is active and competitive. It helps maintain your company's presence and relevance in the market. So, I'm looking forward to attending the JCK Show and hope to see you there! https://lnkd.in/dPTQvxNf

A quick sketch piece from my sketchbook. Title: Scalloped Hammerhead Shark Media: Mixed Description: (Sphyrna lewini) Scalloped hammerhead shark is also called bronze, kinky-headed, or southern hammerhead shark. Its named “scalloped” after the shark’s frontal section of its snout, having two indentations on either side of the central indentation giving a scalloped look. Despite its known to be the most common of all hammerhead shark species. Its under IUCN critically endangered. It shows other hammerhead shark species will be even more rare! This species is specifically hunted in the shark’s fin trade. Scalloped Hammerheads fins are large in size and 'high fin needle content;' their fins are sold for US $100–120 per kilogram. This led them to be overharvest. Atlantic ocean side, overharvest had push its population to drop by 95%! Japan side of Philippine sea (Maybe also northern Taiwan side) may be the last place where this species can arrived in large schoals without fearing to get finned. They are coastal sharks, following the warm currents to eat sardines, mackerel, herring and occasionally cephalopods. Japan as the last known safe natural refuge for this species had push scalloped hammerhead diving tourism. #vanwangye #scallopedhammerhead #sphyrnalewini #hammerheadshark #taiwanwildife #japanwildlife #stopeatingsharkfinsoup #sharkfin #sharkart

Ever felt terrified of freelancing? You're not alone. I was scared too when I left my full-time job to freelance in footwear design. What if I fail? What if no one hires me? What if I can't pay my bills? But as a new mom, I craved more flexibility in my job. So, I started side hustling. Here’s how side hustling can ease your transition: Start small ↳ Take small projects while still employed. Manage your time ↳ Use weekends and evenings wisely. Diversify income ↳ Don’t rely on one source. Try consulting, designing, teaching. Invest in yourself ↳ Use extra income for courses, tools, or a mentor. Build a portfolio ↳ Showcase your work online. Network ↳ Attend events and connect with leaders. Test the waters ↳ See if you enjoy freelancing before fully committing. Gather testimonials ↳ Happy clients are great marketing. Learn to say no ↳ Pick projects that align with your goals. Plan your exit ↳ Have a financial cushion ready. Side hustling lets you grow and test freelancing without pressure. P.S. Are you considering a side hustle?

Here goes Scott Berkun on Jorge Arango's podcast. Scott's latest book, co-authored with Bryan Zug is a must-read for designers and for all those who think design is easy. ;-) Give it a listen. Gems from Why Design is Hard "On the first day of design school, and in the first page of every design book, there should be a clarifying lesson about human nature. Decision-making in the real world is a social process, not a solitary one. This means design is usually a social process too, even if it’s just between a visionary solo designer and their fancy client.” and another … “Designers often say “they just don’t get it” about organizational leaders, as if “getting it” is a realistic expectation for people who are currently rewarded not to get it. It’s like being angry at a rock for being so quiet and unmoving.” cc: Dave Gray Anthony Lopez Lloyd Mathias Ken Gordon https://lnkd.in/gSKV4XDt
