The California Energy Commission has launched an RFP for "Distributed Energy and Electrification Analysis" using the LF Energy Arras project. The goal of the initiative is "to buildout the state’s electric distribution grid model to support the CEC in assessing various electrification and distributed energy resource (DER) adoption scenarios." V2G law could grow California BESS - Battery Energy Storage System capacity 119 GWh in 2027: ClearView Energy. The new law gives the California Energy Commission more discretion to mandate bidirectional EV charging capabilities than a stricter version that failed last year, the independent research firm said. The California Energy Commission may require “any weight class” of battery-electric vehicles to have vehicle-to-grid, or V2G, charging capabilities under a bill passed Aug. 31 by the California Senate. The bill would give CEC broad authority to determine the scope, timing and technical aspects of the bidirectional charging mandate and could in theory render California’s EV fleet capable of “providing the equivalent of several hours of the state’s daily energy demand,” ClearView Energy Partners said in a Sept. 3 research note. Gov. Gavin Newsom, D, is expected to sign the measure this month, ClearView said. The bill represents a “less-prescriptive alternative” to a similar bill passed last year by the California Senate that would have required all EVs sold in California to have bidirectional charging capabilities by the 2030 model year, ClearView said. Still, S.B. 59’s impacts could be significant for California’s utilities and grid. Should CEC mandate bidirectional charging in light-duty vehicles beginning in 2027, the roughly 2 million EVs expected to be sold in California that year could in theory add 119 GWh of power to the grid — 3.6 times more than the 33 GWh of battery duration on the state’s grid today and about 4.4 hours of average 2023 electricity demand. Looking toward a potential California Public Utilities Commission decision on the future of #communitysolar, I'd be remiss if I didn't mention that the Net Value Billing Tariff would require distribution-sited #batterystorage to accompany solar when built. As we see in the great piece from Brad Plumer in The New York Times - batteries are a pretty good idea (both big and small). There are good and smart people at Pacific Gas and Electric Company and Southern California Edison (SCE) and we need them to join us in recognizing that community solar and storage facilities are, at their core, a reliability solution (even if they never make their way into rate base). https://lnkd.in/eynij3ty

On July 15, I had the honor of speaking at the Pacific Northwest Energy Summit in Seattle, hosted by Senators Maria Cantwell and Ron Wyden. Where are the California tribes on this? If Solar for All and all the other funding for tribes is going to work, this legislation is necessary to ensure legal and policy support in the Golden State.

Back in April of 2023, The California Public Utilities Commission's new Net Billing Tariff (also known as NEM 3.0) took effect. The new structure dramatically changed how rooftop solar owners are compensated for any excess power that they produce and sell back to the grid. One year later and we have a bit of perspective on how the market is responding to these changes. In the small scale solar segment of the industry, community solar is a big driver but overall the market continues to be very fractured in how it is developed, approved and constructed. The DOE is helping, and that has turned into 25 new communities in the Energy Transitions Initiative Partnership Project. This latest cohort will each receive technical assistance and up to $50,000 to support projects focused on everything from water filtration and wildfire preparedness to heat pumps, battery storage, microgrids, electric transportation, solar power interconnection, and wind energy potential. What I find particularly exciting about this new cohort is that it includes six Alaska communities, reflecting the growth of renewable energy solutions across diverse regions. #CommunitySolar #RenewableEnergy #SolarPower #Sustainability

Securing the requisite load needed to power EV charging is a constant uphill battle. A large load connection to the grid is an asset that will appreciate with time as supply and demand on the grid is squeezed by transportation electrification, AI data centers, and removal of carbon-based generation facilities. Great article from Canary Media with a deep dive on the issue.
