Back in 2020, many Black professionals felt like they didn’t have much say in their careers. We were reacting to the uncertainty of the world — understandably so — awaiting guidance from companies, accepting less than stellar pay and putting our professional passions on hold to prioritize stability. It’s been a grind, it’s okay to feel it and you’re not alone. Fast forward to 2024, Black professionals are ready to take back their power over their careers. LinkedIn research found that just over 40% of us feel that we’re underpaid, and despite the most competitive job market in recent years, Black professionals are thinking about changing jobs. In fact, in 2024, Black professionals are THE MOST LIKELY group to consider a job move (90%). Conventional wisdom has always told us to work twice as hard if you want to survive — particularly in tough economic times. We’ve been conditioned to attempt to out-sweat everyone else — just to survive, and it has led to Black professionals assuming more responsibilities (27%), working longer hours (22%), and experiencing reductions in flexible working hours (21%). 2024 will require us to turn that notion upside down. It’s not about out-sweating; it will require us to outsmart the process and be more strategic about how we land opportunities. New jobs and opportunities won’t just fall into our laps; they never have. We’re now seeing a tightened job market with just one job opening for every two applicants, which is a reversal of the abundant job opportunities in late 2021 and 2022 (where there were two jobs open for every one applicant). But here’s the good news: In 2024, we have agency, we want more than just jobs. Like Beyoncé said, it’s a Renaissance — a new era where it’s not just about stability; it’s about thriving and telling our personal story in the professional world. Bloomberg Philanthropies is donating $600 million to four historically Black medical schools, boosting their endowments and supporting the education of future Black doctors. 🏫 Recipients: Howard University College of Medicine - $175M Meharry Medical College - $175M Morehouse School of Medicine - $175M Charles R. Drew University of Medicine & Science - $75M This initiative, part of the Greenwood Initiative, addresses systemic healthcare inequities and underinvestment. The funding, determined by class size and expected growth, will empower new generations of Black doctors to create a healthier and more equitable future. ✨ Impact: “Ultimately, the benefits of this gift will be realized in the communities where the next generation of Black doctors practice and among patients who receive their care,” said Garnesha Ezediaro, head of the Greenwood Initiative. 🏳️‍🌈 Happy Pride All 🏳️‍🌈 As a queer Black woman, Pride Month holds a special place in my heart and is my reality/history. It's a time to celebrate our identities, honor our history, and amplify the voices within our vibrant community. Pride isn't just about the festivities (although they are certainly fulfilling)—it's a call to action for each of us to champion inclusivity, equality, and respect in every space we occupy. To my fellow professionals and allies, here are a few ways we can make a meaningful impact: 1. Educate Yourself and Others: Understanding the experiences and challenges faced by the LGBTQIA+ community is crucial. Attend workshops, read diverse perspectives, and share this knowledge within your networks. 2. Advocate for Inclusive Policies: Ensure your workplace policies are inclusive and supportive of LGBTQIA+ individuals. This includes everything from anti-discrimination policies to benefits that recognize diverse family structures. 3. Support LGBTQIA+ Initiatives: Whether it's participating in Pride events, donating to LGBTQIA+ organizations, or mentoring queer youth, your support makes a difference. 4. Be Visible and Vocal: Use your platform to speak out against discrimination and to celebrate LGBTQIA+ achievements. Your voice can inspire others to take action. 5. Listen and Learn: Create spaces where LGBTQIA+ voices are heard and valued. Listen to their stories, understand their needs, and act on their feedback. Mielle Organics’ origin story is by now the stuff of legend among Black female entrepreneurs: In the early 2010s, Chicago nurse Monique Rodriguez was frustrated with the available range of multicultural hair products. She whipped up her own concoction in the kitchen, shared it with friends, gained a loyal following and soon attracted the attention of major investors and international beauty conglomerates. But though dozens, if not hundreds of Black women have undertaken a similar journey, the number who found even a fraction of Rodriguez’s success — or even made it past the kitchen counter stage — is vanishingly small. A decade after launching her first product — a blend of scalp-stimulating peppermint and amino-acid rich almond oil — and a year since becoming one of the few Black women to achieve a lucrative exit by selling her business to Procter & Gamble in 2023 — Rodriguez remains in a rare class. Her peers include Carol's Daughter founder Lisa Price, who sold to L'Oréal in 2017, and Sundial’s Richelieu Dennis, who sold SheaMoisture and several other multicultural hair brands to Unilever in 2014. (Rodriguez and her husband Melvin remain actively involved as chief executive officer and chief operating officer of Mielle, respectively.) In 2021, Rodriguez was one of fewer than 100 Black women to have ever secured over $1 million in venture capital funding (Berkshire Partners invested a reported $100 million into Mielle that year.) Instead of opening doors, that year proved to be a high water mark for Rodriguez and her peers. After edging up only slightly in the immediate post-George Floyd era, funding for Black female founders remains less than one percent of total start-up investment each year, according to data from the nonprofit advocacy group Digital Undivided.
