I was practicing my golf swing and getting used to playing 9-holes in preparation for my first golf tournament with a group of fantastic ladies at Golf Women Mean Business Annual Golf Classic. It got me thinking about the correlation between my new hobby, golf, and my love for data. This is what I realized: 🏌️‍♂️ Teeing Off with Data Management 📊 Like a perfect golf swing, managing data requires precision, strategy, and a keen eye for detail. ⛳️ In golf, every stroke counts. Each action impacts your overall score, from the drive off the tee to the final putt. Similarly, in data management, every data point and decision influences the outcome of a project. Both require meticulous planning and execution to achieve success. Here are a few ways data management is like a round of golf: 1. Preparation is Key: As golfers study the course, data professionals must understand their data landscape. Identifying key metrics and cleaning data sets is like selecting the right club for each shot. 2. Strategic Play: In golf, you plan each shot with the end goal in mind. In data management, strategic planning ensures data is accurate, accessible, and actionable. 3. Adjusting to Challenges: Weather conditions or unexpected obstacles on the course require adaptability. Similarly, data anomalies or system issues need quick thinking and problem-solving skills. 4. Continuous Improvement: Both golfers and data managers strive for continuous improvement. Whether refining your swing or optimizing a database, the goal is to improve daily. 5. Yesterday I posted an example of what happens with teams that don't work together BUT what does it look like when it's done right? Watch the Ohio State marching band - what 'coordinated flow' looks like, all literally marching to the same destination in unison with the same goal. MORE SO, notice how the crowd comes to applause once they figure out what is happening... this is exactly what flow does for you and your organizations. I've been spending a lot of time thinking about innovation. Not just innovation from the product side. But innovation on the social side. It's natural human behavior to revert to what works. But what if what has worked in the past is no longer working now? The specific social innovation I'm talking about is the "Career Fair". I talked to an executive leader that put on a Job fair last year in 2023 they had an ASTOUNDING 247 attendees. Want to take a guess at how many jobs was produced?............ Less than 10 jobs came out of it. As someone who has relied on job fairs in the past to secure a role it's proving to be more and more pointless to attend them. Thinking about this I challenged myself to see what does a V2 look like for a "Career Fair"? What can be done to position candidates and companies to easily facilitate hirings. I've been doing a lot of planning and building with my team to address this problem and I'm happy to finally be able to share this with my network. I'll be hosting an event next month to not only hear the voice of the people but also propose my solution for the Career Fair V2. I was a remote worker for 15+ years and was laid off during Covid. Most of my career involved talking with co-workers who were hundreds, if not thousands, of miles away. I didn't know the people in the town where I live, and my work experience was in an industry that doesn't really exist in Charleston. Having little success in finding a new job, I decided to learn something new. I took a course in XR development by XR Terra. This class set me on a path that I am still on to this day. The path led me to a large multi-day event at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology called the MIT Reality Hack. When I arrived, I immediately connected with some of the most amazing people I have ever met. I was fascinated and also intimidated by them. Imposter syndrome started to kick in hard, and I wondered if leaving my family for four days and competing in an in-person hackathon at one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the world was a good idea. Team formation night was where things got serious. I spent hours at the MIT Media Lab trying to convince people to join my team and work on an application for Qualcomm's new augmented reality glasses. I wanted to turn ordinary people into actors in a giant immersive mystery. The idea was, dare I say, ambitious, especially since I wasn't a developer and would need lots of tech help to pull it off. Various potential teammates came and went. I gave up several times and started to walk back to my Airbnb. It was 1am when I returned to the MIT Media Lab, deciding that I was going to join another team and hoped I could add value in some way and not let my teammates down. When the night was over, I walked across the windy, freezing cold bridge back to Copley Square, feeling a strange sense of self-doubt and regret. My mind was racing, and I couldn't stop thinking about what I had gotten myself into. Why did I think I could compete in a hackathon with so little experience? Should I just take the next flight home or stay a couple more days walking around Boston, obsessing about how I didn’t have the guts to continue down this path? I didn't sleep, and in the morning, I grabbed my laptop, drank too much coffee, and walked to MIT. This turned out to be one of those important decisions that you make, jumping in with both feet, not knowing where you will land. I discovered a lot about myself that day: commit to something and do whatever you can to be of service. I got to see the good in people and was rewarded for going outside my comfort zone. I understood the value of a team. Did we win? No. But by the time the event was over, I had made new friends and helped create something I believed in. I also was not the same person that I was before this event. I now knew what I had to do. A little bit more about how I help in case you've made it this far… For software companies wanting to go SaaS, I’ve seen that they usually struggle to build a compelling business case that puts them where they want to be in a few short years. These businesses find it tough to get started because the unknown is so vast. As a result, they put themselves in danger of losing market share and they struggle to compete against emerging competitors. The real problem is that these business leaders simply don’t know what’s ahead, and that scares them. It’s often easier to stay the course despite the growing trend of SaaS companies winning contracts. To fix this, they first must decide, once and for all, if growth is a top goal for the business and if being a SaaS business is a pre-requisite for that goal. Then a successful transition to SaaS requires a change in thinking. These businesses should know how to: ·       Measure an ROI that emphasizes their cost structure over time instead of just relying on an aggressive sales model for future revenue ·       take advantage of the organizational disruption that occurs during this transition. ·       take advantage of lower-cost technologies to accelerate time-to-market for R&D ·       Shift from on-premise thinking to SaaS thinking in all areas of the business This is a lot to unpack when you don’t know what you don’t know and that’s where I come in. It’s a type of cyber attack that could affect you and your business.     Smishing is like phishing (where you get a message that seems to be from a person or brand you trust) but it happens through text messages. Cyber criminals send fake texts to trick you into giving away personal or financial information.     You receive a text that looks legit, maybe pretending to be from your bank. It asks you to click a link or provide sensitive info. If you do, you might end up downloading malware or visiting a fake website that steals your data. These texts often play on emotions or urgency, like claiming there's an issue with your bank account that needs immediate attention.     Why is this a big deal? As more people use their personal phones for work, smishing can easily target businesses. Imagine a scammer getting hold of your company’s sensitive data or funds. Scary, right? It can lead to financial loss and compromised company information, which could hurt your business's reputation and operations.     To avoid falling victim, stay skeptical of unexpected texts asking for personal or financial info. If you get such a message, don’t click on any links unless you’re 100% sure it’s safe.
