Last week, I joined a dynamic conversation hosted by The Chamber of Commerce for Greater Philadelphia about the region’s thriving life sciences industry. Moderated by Life Sciences Pennsylvania, the discussion focused on how Johnson & Johnson and other companies contribute to and benefit from the region’s innovation and economic development. In addition, I shared how Johnson & Johnson has leveraged the scientific and medical ecosystem in PA to bring the best solutions, products, and services to patients, including:   ·     Globally, we have invested $77B in research and development since 2016 and our North America research and development site is located in suburban Philadelphia. ·     We focus on cell and gene therapies that create personalized solutions for patients and build strategic partnerships to scale the development of complex products. ·     We are an inclusive company that recruits and nurtures talent, providing access to future-forward technology knowledge and skill-building within life sciences and healthcare i.e. artificial intelligence.   There has been significant and ambitious innovation especially over the past 20 years. The Philadelphia region has made exciting contributions to this trend. Where are we going in the next 20 years? I'm excited and hopeful.

This post is intended for a US audience only: Eliminating cancer as a cause of death begins with regular screenings and early detection. And in Maryland, where our US Oncology team is based, unfortunately only 3% of eligible residents receive lung cancer screenings. AstraZeneca is partnering with the University of Maryland Medicine to connect more Marylanders with early interventions to detect lung cancer and treat it effectively. Our partnership over the next 5 years will establish a state-based steering committee ofacademic, industry and community partners. We’ll work together to: -       Expand screening programs and tobacco cessation programs -       Improve early detection in at-risk populations -       Drive research in cancer health disparities, especially for minority and rural communities Health equity starts in our own backyard: no one should miss out on vital lung cancer care because of their socioeconomic status or where they live. When patients are diagnosed early, they have more effective options available to treat their lung cancer. The first generic GLP-1 is available: the authorized generic version of Victoza. --- Monday morning Teva Pharmaceuticals announced the launch of their authorized generic for Victoza (in the comments). This is the authorized generic = not really generic competition yet. Other #GenericDrugs aren't allowed to join until 12/24, when we'll likely see bigger decreases in #DrugPrices.   --- The list price is $704 for 3 pens ($234/pen) before any hidden discounts/rebates. Compare that to $815 ($272/pen) for brand Victoza. =~14% discount off the list price for Victoza --- Extra context: the list price of Victoza dropped ~30% at the beginning of this year, likely due to the impact of the AMP cap removal for Medicaid. This is a further 14% discount for the authorized generic after that big brand price drop in January. --- For those hoping to use generic Victoza to reduce their #GLP1 costs, there are a few tradeoffs compared to newer versions like Ozempic and Mounjaro: -Requires daily injection instead of weekly -Less effective for diabetes management and #WeightLoss However, Victoza is also approved for ages 10 and older vs 18+ for the others. --- Who's making the switch? As a physician-scientist, and an admitted nerd, I get fired up exploring the nexus where medicine and technology converge to help solve medical issues for people living with unmet need and symptoms that interfere with daily life. Helping patients is my passion - developing new drugs is my purpose, which is why Teva is exactly where I should be right now. #WeAreAllInForBetterHealth I had the pleasure of presenting at #BioMedIsrael2024 this week on AI-powered innovation in novel drug development using real examples from Teva's pipeline. The traditional way of developing new medicines is unsustainable. It’s long and costly. Only about 10% of drugs that enter clinical testing will be approved in the United States, down from a success rate of about 15% ten years ago. We can do better, and there’s plenty of room to integrate AI and ML into drug development.
