Don't Automate the Relationship out off... I'll be in Dallas next week with over 400 Church IT Pros. My workshop "Don't Automate the Relationship Out of Discipleship: Designing ChMS Processes for Authentic Connection" takes a look at how we can use Church Management Software to be more intentional and personal. There's a tendency to automate marketing and followup with people in a way that diminishes relationship and makes people feel unseen. We've learned that the issues Integrators have with their Visionaries are often really difficult because having two big personalities working together is bound to cause some tension. These issues run the gamut—from Visionaries doing End Runs to Visionaries not committing to getting on the same page to a lack of mutual respect. Growth can be a messy, uncomfortable, challenging process. I was talking with an executive director yesterday about her association's growth and some of the struggles the organization was experiencing while managing its growth. Changing database systems, scaling staff resources, deciding whether to train staff or hire a contractor, and gauging expectations from the board and committee leaders. The executive director was worried that the organization's growth should be going more smoothly. "Should" can be a dangerous word. Each organization's situation and set of circumstances is different. There are templates, processes and tools to help guide the journey, but creating something new can feel uncomfortable. Creating value is necessarily challenging. Growth is rarely a linear, clear experience, which is why - once you've truly grown - the result is all the more fulfilling.
