Implementing the science of reading statewide needs to be more than an approved list of instructional materials. Educators, some excited, some unsure, and (yes) some resistant, must be brought into the planning phases. Due to our decentralized school governance model in the U.S., teachers are the ONLY individuals making the moment-to-moment decision about what instructional strategies are in place for early and struggling readings. So, teachers should be the drivers of what this roll-out looks like. State leaders can set bold goals, make significant commitments and investments, and chart paths. I think we will see this continue to grow. North Carolina was offering early college in the high schools 20 years ago but I don't know if the program has continuded. "The high school’s “Associate of Arts Degree Pathway” turns junior and senior year of high school into a two-year college curriculum. Students walk the halls of the same high school building and eat in the same cafeteria as before, but now earn college credit, and if they stays on track, they'll get an associate degree at the same time they receives their high school diploma, thereby cutting out two years of paying for college. The high school is one of a growing number around the country offering a so-called “postsecondary enrollment option,” where students can take college courses during the high school day and get college credit. In fact, the number of high school students taking at least one college course has risen to 34 percent, up from just 10 percent in 2010, according to data from the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships. But Burnsville’s program is unusual in offering a full two-year program within its building, rather than just isolated courses or transportation to nearby colleges for part of a day. It’s a stark example of how the line between high school and college is blurring for more students. While such programs may help students access college who may not have been able to before, they also raise questions about the purpose of high school, about what social opportunities might be lost, and about whether the trend pushes students to make decisions about their future careers at too young of an age."

I really like this idea of creating an “assessment culture.” Students and teachers should feel comfortable collaborating on the process of monitoring learning, evaluating progress, and agreeing on actionable instructional goals. This would help create a feeling of agency over one’s learning (and teaching) and help develop the important growth mindset. An assessment culture would help integrate the critical information that formative and summative tests can provide in a more explicit and positive way. The "Single Perspective Instinct," as defined by Hans Rosling, sheds light on our tendency to rely heavily on a single viewpoint, often sidelining potential insights from other perspectives. In the church realm, this can lead to valuing certain viewpoints above others, sticking to traditions or even resisting novel methods that could be beneficial. It can even foster silos within the church, impacting teamwork and collective growth. The antidote to this instinct, in essence, is adopting a toolbox mindset instead of clutching to a single hammer. Recognizing that no one perspective or expertise is adequate alone, we derive greater value by utilizing a variety of tools or viewpoints to address complex challenges. As church leaders, are we open to diverse voices? Do we create space for dialogue and respectful disagreement? Do we seek insights from other fields and disciplines? Remember, the church body comprises multiple parts, and each has something valuable to offer. Embracing a multifaceted approach encourages stronger, healthier, and more vibrant ministries. China Gilreath reports: Women of Color Education Collaborative (WOCEC), a new nonprofit organization, has sprung up to address the lack of #diversity among K-12 #superintendents in the nation.  Led by Stephanie Wood-Garnett, Ed.D., WOCEC provides a cohort model through which current and aspiring educational leaders can interact and empower each other as leaders, build relationships, and elevate their skills through the array of professional development services that WOCEC provides. "I am thrilled to lead an organization that champions and supports women leaders,” said Wood-Garnett, who formerly served as an associate vice president at the Educational Testing Service (ETS) and president of the Institute for Student Achievement. “I understand the unique challenges diverse women leaders face in organizations. When women come together and develop trust and community, we create a foundation for collaboration, support, and lasting positive change in our communities.” Dr. Jamal Watson, executive editor at Diverse: Issues In Higher Education, has been tapped to chair WOCEC’s board of directors. He said that the work of WOCEC is critically important in helping to expand the talent pool within K-12 and higher education.  “WOCEC is taking the lead to formulate solutions and actionable outcomes that will harness resources and contacts to provide access and equity to all," said Watson, who is also a professor at Trinity Washington University. "Under President Wood-Garnett's leadership, I am excited to see how this organization and network will continue to expand in the upcoming years."  Registration is now open for the WOCEC national conference. Considerations for #jobseekers in #education and #edtech...ESSER funding gave a big boost, but that is ending. We are seeing things slow down, which I do see impacting #hiring. This is a primary reason why I question notions like "hiring season" that are posted about on #linkedin

I'm looking for an author or team of authors who can write an accessible, compelling book about service learning and community-based learning for an audience of P-12 teachers. It should both take a critical antiracist or broader equity-based look at traditional approaches to community-based and service learning (addressing deficit views and savior mentalities, for example) and also pivot to what a justice-oriented approach should look like. Or something that rejects "service"-learning overall and describes something more just. This would be for on-the-ground teachers. Who is a good person or team of people to write this book?
