    My friends Amber and Mark Freed have a son, Maxwell that is suffering from an extremely rare genetic disorder; one that has only been diagnosed in about 50 people worldwide. The disease is so rare, in fact, it hasn’t been given an official name and rather is referred to by the name of the affected gene – SLC6A1, which affects the largest inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. SLC6A1 will cause Maxwell to have serious lifelong developmental disabilities as well as a movement disorder, but the…

    My friends Amber and Mark Freed have a son, Maxwell that is suffering from an extremely rare genetic disorder; one that has only been diagnosed in about 50 people worldwide. The disease is so rare, in fact, it hasn’t been given an official name and rather is referred to by the name of the affected gene – SLC6A1, which affects the largest inhibitory neurotransmitter in the brain. SLC6A1 will cause Maxwell to have serious lifelong developmental disabilities as well as a movement disorder, but the worst symptom of his disease would come between the ages of 3 and 4, when he would begin suffering from a debilitating and devastating form of epilepsy, resulting in extreme seizures and regression in his cognitive development and that there is no known cure or treatment for SLC6A1 and that she and her husband should ready themselves for the heartbreaking and challenging road ahead of them. Amber and Mark being the amazing people they are choose to believe that they can make a difference and fight for their son. The first priority for them in securing a treatment for Maxwell will be to fund a clinical trial – a lengthy and expensive process to cover studies that precede human treatments. To do so, the Freed’s must raise $1 million within the next year, or else the technology and treatment will be postponed due to lack of funding.
