One of the most unreported stories in the semiconductor supply chain is the almost overnight and abrupt shutdown of NTE Electronics, Inc in Bloomfield, NJ (post from their LI page below). NTE was a supplier of microelectronic components to major OEMs, heavy industrials, automotive and even prime DoD contractors.    Notwithstanding the fact that parts distributors had to immediately pull NTE products from their websites, leaving hundreds of businesses and government contractors with nearly zero options; the bigger story is the lack of U.S. based legacy chip suppliers.  Even NTE was importing the majority of their supply from Asian sources. This is the reality of our nation's semiconductor supply chain that very few people fully appreciate.    The fact is, most businesses, OEMs and even the DoD does not and cannot afford to build product lines around the most cutting-edge chips, and the lack of a perpetual and secure supply of older-node semis means that the tail is wagging the dog.
