Verizon Business, a long-term trusted partner of the National Weather Service, has been awarded a task order valued at nearly $80 million to transition NWS voice and data services from the #Networx contract to the Enterprise Infrastructure Solutions #EIS vehicle. This month, I hit the 15 bagger mark for my Amphenol (APH) stock. Purchased at end of 2008, it has resulted in a gain of 1,518% over 15.5 years or 19.2% compounded annually. My purpose in posting this is very simple: Buy and Hold investing does work. And it can work very well. The majority of my investor friends are always in a hurry to generate wealth. Short term Calls and Puts seem to be the investment of choice regardless of the leverage risk, the poor odds from asymmetric information, and the terrible tax consequences. People are afraid to commit to a long term strategy, because they really don't want to spend time researching stocks and after picking and holding a stock they don't want to bear the downside stock fluctuations. Over the course of the last 15 years, Amphenol has gone through 12 periods with over a -15% correction. Most people like to lock in gains, partly because they don't know any better. Additionally, most people take price as a proxy for value, and negative trends in prices automatically means there is something wrong with the stock. They don't care to form a long term thesis (a fundamental set of reasons for why they hold the stock) such that they test this thesis on a continual basis to make their buy/sell decisions. That is where their faith should be placed - faith should not be placed in the price movement of a stock. But even more important than faith is patience. I have long determined that the number one trait for successful investing is mental calmness and patience. Having the simple ability to sit still and alone in a room for 30 minutes without thinking of anything is a better indicator of long term investing success than any obscure, off-the-beaten-path research that you perform. This all leads to my final point - Aesop's fable of The Tortoise and the Hare. I remember in grade school listening to that story as my teacher read it out loud. And I thought at the time it was the stupidest, most untrue story. The Hare always wins. It took a few decades to figure that Aesop was right: Tortoises Always Beat Hares. (And the picture below is some proof of that).
