What I learned this week…. As the economy works to eliminate the healthcare cost of poor nutrition, there is no simple set of instructions to follow. There is an abundance of AgTech, FoodTech and HealthTech innovations touching a piece of the bigger equation. But each is driven by divergent signals (GLP-1 vs. sustainable fuels). If this were a large corporation, its R&D group would coordinate the various parts to fit a broader objective. But there is no Bell Labs of longevity or nutrition. The master architect is 350k years of human evolution encrypted in our DNA. Without a large R&D lab or a master plan, it comes down to early adopter customers as our guide. And up to capital providers to see the knowledge arbitrage and invest. We are assembling Food is Health from a pile of Lego blocks. 1) The most legitimate startup investor is a customer. Why don’t we have a tool like PitchBook to find early adopter customers? 2) Nutrient test assays, and many assays, measure a proxy attribute to estimate the target nutrient (i.e. protein). NIR and other spectroscopy are non-destruction and measure a wider array of orthogonal attributes. With the addition of AI, increasing correlations expect an acceleration of valuable insights linking soil, crop genetics, bioavailability, nutrients, health, and longevity. And ultimately, affordable nutrition. 3) Intermittent fasting plus protein pacing (consuming protein at consistent intervals), may boost weight loss and gut health. Perhaps important to GLP-1 treatment and boost to Fairlife Core Power Elite. 4) If we can monitor crops for expression of nutritional qualities (Macro and Micro) during the growing season, we could dynamically modify inputs to modulate nutritional density in season or as a training set for the next season. (John Kempf) 5) Architectural Innovation: Vogue wasn’t replaced by a fashion media company, it was replaced by 10,000 influencers. Salesforce will not be replaced by another CRM. On the latest Vital Signs, Nikhil Krishnan and I had a ton of fun chatting with Dr. Atul Butte. Dr. Butte is a professor at UCSF, Chief Data Scientist of the UC Health System, and a co-founder of numerous healthcare startups. In our conversation, Dr. Butte shared his takes on healthcare AI opportunities, challenges, hype, and more. A few highlights: ⚡LLM use cases, data, and growth LLMs are already helping to solve the “drudgery” aspects of medicine, such as automatically drafting SOAP notes and patient messages. Dr. Butte is excited about future applications of LLMs that can help with the “cognitive” aspects: with difficult medical problems an LLM might be able to stitch together disparate pieces of information to generate a potentially novel solution. He also highlights that prompt engineering will become the next “coding language” as so much of leveraging LLMs is knowing how to ask them the right questions. Additionally, Dr. Butte discusses how since 2016, UCSF has been working to deidentify its patient notes so that it can query them to answer clinical questions and ultimately enhance patient care. ⚡The need for patient-facing AI As patients are increasingly able to access their own personal health data in nicely structured formats (e.g., EHRs, wearables), they desperately need more tools to help them interpret and make decisions using that data. Dr. Butte understands that these patient-facing solutions are challenging to get funded but he emphasizes that patients need to receive the benefits of AI sooner. ⚡Evaluating healthcare AI solutions In order to evaluate AI solutions, we often put human specialists – such as medical professionals – on the same tasks. Understanding that specialists often disagree with each other, a significant challenge arises in figuring out how we can evaluate AI considering we can’t just “average” all the specialist opinions. Dr. Butte points out that there still remains a massive gap in AI evaluation tools. Additionally, there are so many organizations that want to have a say in how healthcare AI is regulated that the landscape is uncertain. VC world can be cruel and unforgiving. With LPs more and more pushing for distribution and liquidity, fund managers in the mid-tenure of their fund with zero DPI and TVPI around 1.0 would have much more difficulty to raise new fund. The ability to fundraise is one of the crucial indications and validation of the job for VCs. Key highlights from the article below: Thirteen percent of venture General Partners (GPs) no longer plan to raise another fund due to LP pullback. This rate has doubled since H1 2023 when only 6% of GPs had no plans for another fund. Nearly 44% of venture firms surveyed in mid-2023 had previously postponed their fundraising plans due to concerns about overexposure to the asset class. Many emerging managers entered venture capital in 2019 or 2020 when the LP market supported more funds. However, slow exits in the first half of 2024 have led to challenges in raising second funds without significant cash distributions to LPs. Some venture GPs are now actively participating in the secondaries market to demonstrate returns. Despite the challenges, GPs who secured fresh capital remain optimistic. I recently spoke with a former founder who has become a well-known investor, and their reason for becoming a full-time investor really resonated with me. They chose the VC path because they understand how crucial it is to simply be there for founders. Being present, focusing on what truly matters, responding promptly, and connecting truthfully on a human level makes a world of difference. The most important part? Listening intently and genuinely caring about the entrepreneur and their journey, and being there for them selflessly as they trudge along what can often be a lonely journey. In the increasingly competitive world of venture capital, it’s easy to get caught up in pitches that highlight the latest portfolio services, tools and expansive networks. However, the core of my work — my chosen craft — is supporting founders in the simplest and most impactful way: by being there. This approach sometimes falls out of focus and isn’t for everyone, but I hope it continues to resonate with many. It may seem overly straightforward, but it’s often the most powerful way to help founders navigate their challenges and succeed. The best founders, I believe, don’t need me. The capital and resources we provide are important, but they don’t define and determine ultimate success — founders and their teams do. Let’s not forget that amidst all the complexities, the true value lies in our simple presence and commitment. We’re lucky to be along for the ride if founders choose us, and that should be taken seriously.

He who has seen exponential growth understands and allocates. The ratio of founders or tech employees who are also small angels in SF is compared to European ecosystems multiple times higher. Allocations of pensions funds, foundations or endownments to VC asset class also higher. Sure, there might be legal (SAFEs) and tax reasons but the main point from my perspective is this. Once you experienced exponential growth first-hand, you understand, you can imagine it. And you start to allocate and support. Best place for that was and still is SF. Its harder to imagine exponential compared to linear growth. And there are not many good examples of exponential growth in Europe in last years. We somehow missed on cloud, mobile and also AI now. Europe driven by industry/manufacturing and private equity, US more by tech.

The Information just broke the news of the incredible $8B+ #fundraising haul, with General Catalyst nearly doubling its last total. Fund breakdowns include $4.5B for "core venture funds," $1.5B for their "core creation team," and $2B for "multiple accounts." This was a 33% oversubscription to their $6B fundraising target, which surfaced in April 2024 by the Financial Times. While this is great news for the #entrepreneurial founders, the key question /challenge for General Catalyst will be where to place the newly closed funds to deliver the returns expected by their #limitedpartners that entrust them with their hard-earned capital. The VC industry is broken. Instead of fostering innovation, it's focused on profits for fund managers (GPs) over returns for investors (LPs) and startup success. A 2012 Kauffman Report warned of underperformance, excessive fees, and bloated fund sizes, but these problems have only worsened. Issues: 1) Shift to "2% Game": GPs now prioritize management fees over performance-based returns. 2) Big Funds, Poor Returns: Larger funds often underperform, hurting LPs and founders. 3) Misaligned Incentives: GPs profit regardless of fund success, leaving others to bear the risk. This Tech Crunch article has good background but in a nutshell here's the situation: 1) Lab grown meat serves a need. Better for the environment, animal welfare, feeding a growing population, it could even be healthier. 2) The industry needs needs lots of R&D. Billions in VC money has helped jumpstart the industry, but capital has largely dried up. 3) Cost of lab grown meat is still more expensive than animal raised. The traditional meat industry is fighting it, while Florida has an outright ban. Meanwhile, the viable players in the industry need to figure out how to scale up production if they ever want to make money. So, what would you do to advance the lab grown meat industry?
