Are you losing your potential clients? I think most people have references that we assume are universal -- but they might not be. YEARS ago when I worked at UI I had a sign in my office that said "Toto, I have a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore." I grew up in the US and most people my age had seen the movie The Wizard of Oz a few times. One day one of the international students asked me what my sign meant. I realized that not everyone gets all of the same references. Earlier this week it was announced that LinkedIn would be changing the User Agreement in November of 2024. So -- what will be different between the new User Agreement and the current one? One of my LinkedIn trainer friends suggested comparing both versions using ChatGPT My first thought was grabbing both files and using "diff." Of course, I realize that if I were to invite people to a review of the new User agreement and letting people know that I explored all the changes using "diff" I'd likely attract maybe 5 Unix geeks. Alright, here goes--my career path so far 🚀 2016: Graduated with a Bachelor’s in Business Administration, ready to take on the world. 2017: Moved to Minneapolis and landed my first “real” job… in a cubicle. Installed flooring by day, learned SEO by night, then hired full-time. 2019: Full agency hustle, fell in love with SEO and helping small businesses grow and succeed. 2021: Agency scaled from 5 to 20+ people, now Lead SEO/General Manager. 2021: Moved to an enterprise agency to learn large-scale SEO and took on SEO for some of the biggest brands in the U.S. 🏢 2024: Made the leap to freelance SEO. Now, I support amazing digital agencies and small/medium businesses while traveling to 15+ countries. 🌎 How did it happen? I've seen a few job postings floating around for social media managers and specialists that list in the job description what their posting cadence should be using algorithm hacking reminiscent of the early naughties when brands posted an unhinged number of times a day just to get to the top of the feed. ✨ You're hiring someone who knows about social media so they can tell YOU what the best strategy is for your company. ✨ They should be the one telling you what posting frequency should be. They will best know what sort of blend of video and static images you should have. You will be amazed at how your metrics will change for the better when you allow someone who is in the social media weeds to steer your strategy. Sit back. Give them some space to work their magic. Let them have input on how much should be organic vs. paid. That's why you're hiring them in the first place. ✨ Stop using a strategy just because it worked 10 years ago. ✨ The whole point of strategy is to formulate a plan given all of your variables. You want to engage with customers and build a brand from quality of your posts and community. Not from the number of times you can post the same image in a feed to meet a 3 post per day quota. Put intention into your posts and track your analytics to see what performs, what doesn't, and when your audience is the most engaged. ✨ If they like it, they'll subscribe. ✨ If a user loves your content, they will subscribe to see when you post something new. You don't have to worry about posting the same thing three times in one day just to get it in front of them. If anything, posting the same thing three times in one day has the opposite result. If I get too many notifications in one day from one company that have nothing to do with a major event, then I hit the unsubscribe button. That content is no longer useful to me when it becomes a nuisance. People are working, spending time with friends and family, and living their lives (and most likely watching Bridgerton with their cat). If you've already posted that day, think about the weight of your multi-post. Is it worth getting their attention a second or third time? Is your post worth tagging *at everyone*? How I write copy my CEO can't reject: (nor turn into corporate jargon) As marketers, we've all been there. Spending hours on a deliverable. Tweaking every word, space, image to fit. Then, when it seems perfect and ready to launch, sh*t happens: Your non-marketer colleagues have their "feedback" to share. - X-zillions of comments later, - after dozen of random ideas in Slack, - and a few "we should talk about ROI" emails... You're left with just a few hours to fix everything, only to end up with the usual corporate fluff. My simple solution? Show your proven process, making every word undisputable. It takes 3-steps: 1. CLARIFY YOUR MESSAGING - Show what Positioning we're trying to have in the market and how we're planning to get there. - Pinpoint your ICP (with data): Champion, pain point, current solution, alternatives, Decision-maker to help convince. - Articulate your capabilities: main one, features', what direct and tangible outcome do they bring, differentiator. 2. DESIGN THE STRUCTURE - Explain the design strategy: How is this format consumed? Why? How do we leverage this? - Prioritize the structure by attention levels (low, medium, high) and intent categories (discover, research, compare). - Justify each visual, section, element (just one line to answer "why is it designed this way?"). 3. WRITE THE COPY - Use your Messaging Elements to justify why you write each part of the copy (ex: [Problem] to grab attention). - Use Messaging Frameworks to justify why you chose each word. - Use color code to highlight this process, and make it accessible for relevant parties (a Figma is enough). Showcasing your process proves your work's value. (and leaves no room for unjustified feedback) This method has side benefits: - No more starting from a blank page. - Delegating is faster and gets better results. - All communications get consistent, even across teams. But the main benefit? You stop writing for approval—and start writing for impact.

Does your health writer REALLY understand AHPRA advertising guidelines? Or do they just say they do? Anyone can talk the talk, but what you want is someone who actually knows what they’re doing. Because at the end of the day, you’ll be held responsible for non-compliant advertising, even if you get someone else to write the copy yourself. So here’s how to choose the right copywriter or digital agency if you need to comply with AHPRA advertising guidelines. ✅ Ask if they’re familiar with the guidelines ✅ Ask for examples of the types of clients they worked with and how they ensured their copy was compliant ✅ Ask to read case studies about their work with the advertising guidelines ✅ Look through their website * Do they mention AHPRA compliance as part of their core services, or just in passing? * Do they have resources or blogs about the guidelines? * How often do they talk about compliant advertising? ✅ What do other people say about their knowledge? Are there any testimonials? Finally, test them by asking a specific question relating to the guidelines you know the answer to. The onus is on you to make sure any copy you use to promote your practice complies with AHPRA advertising guidelines. So do your homework. Recent data from a survey commissioned by Paycom found that nearly 70% of full-time U.S. workers believe they would benefit from receiving regular mental health-related care. Today’s employees are LOOKING for support. This is meaningful and a clear opportunity for businesses. It’s amazing the level of mental wellness support and services Paycom offers team members. Another important factor is removing the stigma that surrounds mental health, making open conversations and empathy second nature to teams. This month, our employees and organization gave $33,000 to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI). When you work to be a whole-hearted organization, you create safe spaces to share and grow.

I was just tagged in a Slack digital community about a question that I think syncs up with why I feel channels like community giving days are worth the investment when the circumstances are right. I was asked to weigh in on direct mail list acquisition and share any data I may have had. I'll share what I cited in the comments below. When it comes to the 97% of nonprofits making under $5 million annually, I'm on team direct mail but not on team list purchase. There are much more cost effective and affinity-friendly ways to grow a direct mail list and a community giving day is a lovely opportunity for that. I've seen this done very well where a nonprofit participates in a community giving day and receives some new donations. Some internal research at Neon One have shown new supporter acquisition can be as high as 80% for a channel like a community giving day. It depends on the platform and the community giving day, but sometimes you are provided address information or can quickly acquire this in a short follow-up request email. Many nonprofits stop their engagement shortly after the giving day concludes or even rely on the platform to do the heavy lifting on transactional receipting the person and leaving it at that. This year, consider doing a low-cost direct mail piece like a postcard that is very mission and cause forward. Especially if it's a community giving day where you live, pick visuals that help anchor the cause in very locally specific ways.
