Key stats show that: 😩 43% feel overwhelmed by content demands. 💨 89% report the need for faster content turnaround. 😣 47% struggle to stand out. ✍️ 62% use AI for content creation. 💡 50% use AI to brainstorm ideas. I use AI for research often. I’ve had little luck generating good images (little luck is being nice. Basically, I suck at generating images). If I were building a #productmarketing organization from the ground up, I’d consider myself lucky. Most product marketing leaders don't have that luxury. They generally inherit a team and then determine the best way to shape it to meet the needs of the organization. No shortage of challenges there! Regardless of the scenario, here are my top 5 building blocks for creating a product marketing discipline that has greater strategic value to the organization. As a product leader, one of the ongoing challenges is mapping out a high-level, multi-year vision while also nailing down a clear, detailed roadmap for the upcoming year. Here are some tips to make your planning more effective: 1. Start with Company Vision and Strategic Themes Begin by aligning with your company’s top priorities for the year. Whether the focus is revenue growth, conversion, building a world-class team, or something else, these themes should serve as a guiding star for your roadmap. 2. Align Product Verticals with Strategic Themes Once you have your strategic themes, evaluate your product verticals. Ask yourself how each vertical can contribute to the goals set. For instance, if revenue growth is a key target, bring revenue-driving products to the forefront. If a vertical doesn’t support these themes, consider shifting focus or introducing new initiatives that do. 3. Integrate Your Team and Product Backlog With your product verticals aligned, look to your team and backlog to define how you’ll support these themes in detail. For example, if user acquisition is a priority, consider features that can attract more users or optimize CAC to stretch marketing dollars further. Finally, define success metrics that clearly align your team’s goals with the broader vision. Allow your team to present how they would approach the "how", keeping these themes front of mind. Thinking of taking on debt for your unprofitable DTC brand? Think again. Here's the thing, there's a ton of nuance to consider when addressing this question, but there is one thing you should always remember: All debt must eventually be repaid—with profit. If you don’t have the profit to cover it, that means paying it back with equity dollars. And if you’re raising equity to pay off debt, you're getting hit twice: 1. Once for the cost of debt (interest)... 2. And once for the cost of raising equity (getting your ownership diluted)... Have you ever heard the phrase "eat your own dog food"? I firmly believe that no matter your role, it's crucial to actively use and experience the product you work on. This is especially true for product teams, and here’s why: 1. Understanding of the Product: You gain a deeper, firsthand knowledge of how your product functions. 2. Identify Experience Opportunities: You directly encounter any user experience gaps or pain points, just like your customers do. 3. Advocacy: You become a stronger advocate for your product, understanding its strengths and where it can improve. At Universal, I encourage my teams to visit our parks and use our app as often as possible. And honestly, it's hard to beat when your "product" happens to be technology inside a theme park! Here's a challenge: once a month, set aside time to use your product—whether it's an internal tool or an external offering. Go through the getting started process to see your product through the eyes of a new customer. Then, dive into some of the primary tasks or "jobs to be done." For us, that means finding an attraction, placing a food order, or receiving a notification when a wait time is low.

Momentum > Perfection 🚀 In product development—and life—waiting for perfection is the enemy of progress. We’ve all been there, tweaking and refining, chasing that perfect solution before making a move. But here’s the thing: momentum beats perfection every time. When you start moving, even with an imperfect plan, you create opportunities to learn, adapt, and improve. Action leads to insight, while perfection can lead to paralysis. So today, think about that project or decision you’ve been holding off on. What can you do to move the needle? It doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to start. Small, consistent action is what leads to big breakthroughs over time.

Stop launching products DTC just because it’s an “easy channel to turn on.” You should launch on the DTC channel because you’ve found a way to leverage it in a way that gives you an edge. I think this truth should be applied to all channel selection decisions. How does that channel serve your strategy? Have you identified how your brand can uniquely leverage that channel to give you and edge and win? If you can’t answer these questions then launching into DTC, or any other channel for that matter, is just a “spray and pray” strategy.

Stop throwing a North Star Metric at your team without any context. It doesn't work. A NSM is not a concept that will create immediate alignment. "Here's the metric, now go optimize the product to improve the metric." Product teams need more to figure out what is influencing the NSM. And management needs more to prove its value. We try to coin complex terms for something simple: Just build a good product that actually solves a problem. One razor to ask, would you recommend your service to a loved one, if they encountered the problem you are trying to address. Along the way, make more money than you spend.

I’d be curious to see a breakdown of what percentage of holiday DTC revenue comes from what percentage of brands. Would it be 80% from 20% of brands? If you’re one of the 80%, it’s still so hard to find traction and build momentum—and so costly. How can we better serve the 80% of entrepreneurs who are bootstrapping their businesses?

If you could only create one piece of content from scratch, it should definitely be this one... Podcasts. It's the best thing I ever did when I first started at Product Marketing Alliance. And not just for their versatility. Before I worked at PMA, I knew jack s**t about product marketing. Despite this, within 9 months, I had created an accredited PMM certification that went on to sell millions. Now there was obviously a LOT more than just podcasts that helped with this, but they were huge. I was talking 8-9 PMMs a week for 1+ hours each. I layered in tons of practical PMM to the theory I had already brushed up on. I peeled several layers deeper into the role (deeper than you could ever achieve online). I understood the exact language and terminology PMMs use. I got a true understanding of the pain points, challenges, and goals of my audience. I expanded my network and made real connections, with real people. I became an internal go-to on all things PMM. I accelerated my learning 50x. My advice? If you're new to a role and you're not an expert on the topic, start a podcast. Overtime, you'll become an internal SME all the while creating great content that can be repurposed into pretty much every format. #content #marketing #contentmarketing #marketinginsights
