The Pennsylvania Board of Nursing manages nearly 242,000 registered nurses, making up 4.57% of all RNs in the US and ranking PA fourth in the nation for active RN licenses. It’s no wonder, with the state being home to top-notch hospitals, offering nurses opportunities in various specialties like the ER, ICU, and med/surg departments 🏥 But before diving into practice, you need to master the licensing process. Becoming a certified RN in Pennsylvania involves meeting several key requirements: 🔹 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐥𝐞𝐭𝐞 𝐚𝐧 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 𝐍𝐮𝐫𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐠𝐫𝐚𝐦 Show proof of completing an accredited nursing program, whether it’s an associate degree, bachelor’s degree, or certification in professional nursing. 🔹 𝐏𝐚𝐬𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐂𝐋𝐄𝐗-𝐑𝐍 𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐁𝐓𝐏𝐄 Exam results are mailed within 30 days. MHQP leaders have helped spearhead an effort to urge the Massachusetts legislature to pass pending legislation which includes the establishment of a #PrimaryCare Task Force in Massachusetts. This Task Force would help lead the Commonwealth out of its current primary care crisis by studying primary care access, delivery and payment, and issuing recommendations over the next year to stabilize and strengthen the primary care system and the primary care workforce in the state. 133 Massachusetts health care stakeholders and leaders sent a letter to leaders of the Massachusetts Senate and House of Representatives serving on the conference committee focused on the legislation, pressing for immediate action on the proposal. “We urge you to support Section 116 of the Senate Healthcare bill (S. 2881) as a critical first step in addressing the Primary Care crisis in Massachusetts,” state the authors of the letter. “If we ignore this crisis, Primary Care will continue to erode, and the cost of healthcare will continue to rise in the face of worsening health equity and access to care.” The legislature has until the end of July to complete work for the current session. A joint conference committee is working to come to an agreement on the health care bill before then. MHQP would like to thank State Senator Cindy FRIEDMAN for her proactive leadership on this bill. Leaders from across Hartford HealthCare came together for our Annual Quality & Safety Summit, a national conference-caliber event where healthcare professionals, executives, and board members confront the challenges of our time and craft solutions that matter. The focus this year was sobering yet essential: Reimagining Maternal Fetal Health given the worsening state of maternal and infant health in our country. National inequities are growing, with an alarming increase in preventable harm for Black and Hispanic mothers and babies. The care and outcome gaps, which once seemed contained, have widened, underscoring the urgent need for action. The data presented was difficult to hear, and the room carried the weight of its implications. Yet, amidst the grim realities, there was a determined energy to do more—together. The numbers are not good across the country, but also not in our state. We know this issue demands a collective response as a system. In the central region, we’ve set a bold goal for 2025: advancing our Zero Harm metric for maternal and infant preventable harm. But we understand that addressing this crisis goes beyond improving our internal practices. We must also connect deeply with our communities—empowering not just birthing individuals but their entire support networks. Our Quality & Safety Summit sparked vital conversations and ignited the light bulbs we need to illuminate the path forward. Improving maternal and infant health outcomes is a monumental challenge—but it is one we are committed to meeting head-on. We need to create a future where every mom and baby has a chance to thrive. Pennsylvania is facing a healthcare provider shortage and healthcare access crisis, with restrictions on NPs only worsening these issues. “We have to have a signed, written, collaborative agreement with at least two physicians on file in Harrisburg,” said nurse practitioner and PCNP President-Elect Janice Miller. “This prevents a lot of NPs from being able to see patients in rural communities, where doctors have retired or doctors are leaving, and there is no health care left for the residents and the community.” Pennsylvania's outdated restrictions continue to push skilled, qualified NPs to leave PA in the midst of a workforce shortage, making it more even more difficult for PA residents to find and access health care. For 11 consecutive years, reports like this one have found that the prices providers (hospitals, physicians, etc.) charge are the main factor driving Massachusetts’ high health care costs. While we value our hospitals and our health care institutions, it’s worth asking – what are we as taxpayers paying for, and at what cost? Individuals on Medicaid (taxpayer-funded) pay minimal to zero costs (~1/3 of the state’s population) and Medicare (taxpayer-funded) cost share is graduated based on income. But, for people with private health insurance (employer-sponsored health insurance, like Wellpoint members) health care premiums and out-of-pocket costs are taking up a significant –and growing– part of their income- between 20% to 40%. Perhaps it’s time to re-evaluate how taxpayer funds are being used to support health care and work with policymakers to reform reimbursements as means to help people stay healthy and out of hospitals.  In the meantime, below are some steps people can take to start understanding health care costs and stay healthy:   1. Think health, not sick care: eat healthy, exercise regularly, and stay active every day; 2. Take control of your health. Partner with your primary care team and be sure to get recommended preventive care and screenings; 3. Use primary care, urgent care, and community health centers for non-emergent care. These locations are the lower cost alternatives; 4.
