“Not a single organization representing journalists and news workers agreed to this undemocratic and secretive deal with one of the businesses destroying our industry.” This is another missed opportunity for meaningful progress and a reminder of Big Tech’s continued unchecked dominance. It also makes abundantly clear that the need for federal action is now more urgent than ever. It is past time for Congress to pass the Journalism Competition and Preservation Act (JCPA), a bipartisan bill that would give broadcasters and other news publishers the power to come together and negotiate fair terms with Big Tech for how their content is used online. The size of tech platforms like Amazon, Facebook and Google dwarfs local TV and radio stations. These tech giants act as gatekeepers of online content, controlling how consumers access news, and how news publishers are compensated for the use of our content. At the same time, they also siphon away advertising revenue that would otherwise be reinvested into local journalism. The platforms exploit their dominant market position, making it harder for broadcasters to sustain their operations while benefiting from the valuable content created by local stations.  News is costly to produce, and stations invest significant resources to keep reporters in their local communities. The business practices of the tech giants prevent local stations from recouping their investment in local journalism, as these platforms exert enormous influence over what online content is eligible to be monetized. Big Tech controls the share of revenue they retain and the amount passed on to the content providers, who ironically bear the costs of producing the quality journalism that benefits the platforms. The bipartisan JCPA will level the playing field, allowing TV and radio stations to continue their vital work in producing trusted, fact-based journalism. With the upcoming elections, we need strong local newsrooms to keep Americans informed. In fact, the Swing State Project found that a majority of Americans trust their local broadcasters more than any other medium for election news. Local broadcast stations know the communities they report on, they drive on the same roads, take their children to the same parks and cheer on the same local sports teams as their audiences. From covering city council meetings to the high school football game to the upcoming election, broadcasters provide verified news and information Americans can trust. Local newsrooms need a level playing field to work with Big Tech. Congress needs to pass the JCPA – our democracy depends on it.

The television industry has continually evolved, from the "Golden Age" to what was recently dubbed the era of peak TV. According to eMarketer's "The End of Peak TV" report, while this chapter may be closing, it opens a promising door for advertisers. With rising costs for ad-free subscriptions, giants like Netflix and Disney+ are introducing ad-supported tiers, broadening the audience base for advertisers. Additionally, the popularity of free ad-supported streaming (FAST) channels is soaring. In fact, a 2023 Hub Research report shows 57% of viewers now engage with FAST content, and this trend is only expected to grow. As new content production slows, advertisers are turning to reruns, with a 2023 Guideline survey noting a shift of ad spend to 79% on reruns. This evolving landscape proves the durability of connected TV (CTV) advertising, suggesting that the era of peak TV advertising is just beginning. Embrace this shift. The plan lays out a commitment of nearly $250 million over the next five years, with one-fourth of the money coming from state taxpayers and three-fourths of it coming from Google and possibly other private donors. PanelPicker was first launched in 2007 (the initial version of the interface was much more rudimentary than what currently exists). Much of the inspiration for the PanelPicker came from the community features pioneered by the online t-shirt company Threadless. 2) ADDING VIDEO. One of the big improvements to this interface in recent years is the addition of video functionality. This addition gives the community a much better understanding of the speaking experience (and energy) of the proposed presenter or the proposed panelists. 3) PANELPICKER PROPOSALS POWER SXSW! Today, speaking proposals that come through the PanelPicker account for about 70% of the content at the SXSW Conference. The other 30% of SXSW Conference content is curated by staff. 4) COMMUNITY VOTING. Anyone can take part in community voting. Just log in to your PanelPicker account. If you don't have an account, setting one up is quick, easy and free! But don't delay because the PanelPicker community voting process concludes at the end of the day on Sunday, August 18. In 2025, for the first time in 120 years, New York City will elect a mayor without an endorsement from the New York Times. Much of the change in local news happens gradually: attrition thins the ranks, new entrants (like us!) build incrementally. But even in a big market like New York City, it comes in spasms, too. Today, there were two large, negative developments. First, Audacy announced that it would be retiring the legendary WCBS 880 call letters, and ending its all-news format, leaving 1010 Wins (which has the same parent company) as the only commercial news station in the city. Then, the New York Times announced it would stop making endorsements in local and statewide races, ceding the field entirely to the conservative New York Post. The Times's endorsements were deeply researched and reported, and hugely influential. They also resulted in some pretty robust vetting. The Post, meanwhile, effectively endorses candidates on its news pages, in op-ed section, and in its editorials, and campaigns hard, both on page 1 and online for the candidates preferred by its owner. We are building an alternative in THE CITY (newsroom), but the urgency of the task just increased significantly.

And I would just plead with everyone here, when you make a film or a show with a powerful social message, an empowering positive message like Barbie or Inside Out, to put aside a small fraction of your budget in advance to pay for an impact producer. Because when films have a dedicated person or team to take the film and use it for campaigning, for targeted education, for changing laws, when films get shown to the right people in power at the right time, when films are linked to the right charities, amazing things can happen. Has your workplace adjusted its gathering policies for the current extreme summertime heat spell? Here in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area we are on pace to experience one of our hottest summers. And that's saying a lot. No, we're not Phoenix which tells D.C. to hold its beer. For several days running, high temperatures in the Phoenix Metroplex have topped close to 120 degrees Fahrenheit (or 48.9 Celsius). That's Khamsin-level (Saharan) heat With so much super heating, Norfolk Southern railroad tracks used by our commuter lines are likely to start buckling, causing service delays and cancellations. And electrical brownouts, when the electrical loads flutter and indoor temperatures spike, are happening across our area. Yesterday, my wife and I restocked merchandise at our vintage clothing brand's shop spaces in Leesburg, Virginia. And I happened to snap this photo of my dashboard thermometer to memorialize the outdoor temperature reading. At 11 PM last night, the heat index in Leesburg was still over 100 degrees Fahrenheit (37.8 degrees Celsius). That's deadly. Worst of all, our current heat wave is correlating with a spike in violence. Yesterday, gunfire erupted in the parking lot and food court of our indoor shopping mall in Manassas, Virginia sending at least two people to the hospital. Heat causes people physical injury such as from heatstroke. But more commonly, it renders many unable to keep their composure; the violence that took place yesterday in my normally quiet suburban community was, in extreme heat conditions, bound to happen. Here's the thing. Companies that have a workplace gathering policy should insist that their talent take shelter during extreme heat periods to work remotely. Not only will this render their talent more productive, it will keep them safe from heat-related trauma. I've long believed that human caused climate change has a starring role in our increasingly hot summers. And hiring managers should, even if they have thorough workplace gathering plans, make sure that their teams are kept safe from exposure to extreme heat and humidity. I've had the good fortune of working at more than a handful of companies throughout my career, enough of them that I am clear on what suits me and what doesn't. Priority #1 = GOOD PEOPLE. I need (in no particular order) amiable, fun, calm, smart, balanced, small-ego'd, life-cherishing, (dog-loving-preferred) people. Next...a great, big, beautiful STEEP LEARNING CURVE...if I'm not boldly going where Jeff has never gone before, I'm just plain bored. There must also be RELEVANCE...whatever product, service, or company I represent must provide true solutions for today's new demands and challenges. Lastly, I need to LOVE THE PRODUCT.
