Online Learning Keeps Rising Among K-12 Students 🖥️📈 A fascinating new report from the Washington State Office of the Superintendent highlights the continued growth of online learning in K-12 schools post-pandemic. Some key takeaways: 💻 Nearly 5% of all public school students in Washington (54,380) took online classes last year, up from pre-pandemic levels. 🏳️‍⚧️ There was a significant increase in students identifying as Gender X enrolling in online courses, potentially seeing it as a safer learning environment. 👩‍🏫 However, online class completion rates remain lower than in-person, except for Gender X students. Teachers still struggle to fully engage students virtually. 🌐 English language learners were least likely to take online classes, underscoring the challenges of learning a new language remotely. While the convenience and flexibility of online learning is undeniable, this trend raises important questions around equal access, student engagement, and the future of classroom instruction. As one expert notes, "We always say 'it takes a village,' but in online learning, it really does." Chronic absenteeism has been a persistent issue in the wake of the pandemic. While Indiana is doing better than the national average, and things are moving in the right direction, we still have around 200,000 students missing a month or more of school. To bring that to a local level, there are 74 schools across our state where half of the student population is missing a month or more of school. Chronically absent students are significantly less likely to read by third grade, master key ELA and math skills, or be college/career-ready. To support this work statewide, rather than just having an old-fashioned spreadsheet, which state's have always had, Indiana now has a transparent attendance dashboard that will make it easier to see and interact with the local and state data. These are a little different than the Illinois State Board of Education Cross-Sector Employability Competencies (aka, the Essential Skills) because these come from the National Association of Colleges and Employers, but there certainly is an enormous amount of overlap! As school districts across Illinois work toward implementing the Essential Skills throughout the school day for ALL students across the grade levels, how great is it for teachers, counselors, and administrators to know that if a four-year university is that student's path toward their career and future, Northern Illinois University is aligned with both what is taking place in school districts and what adults need for success in the modern workforce???

This study from #ACUE and the #Lumina Foundation offers a compelling reassessment of what students truly seek in their educational experience. It challenges the entrenched notion that students are primarily motivated by grades, revealing a more nuanced understanding of their needs. As we look to the future of higher education, the insights from this research could guide a necessary shift towards a more student-centered approach, one that recognizes and responds to the evolving needs of today’s learners. As a former secondary educator, I observed that traditional grade books often oversimplified the student journey, failing to capture the essential skills needed for success as independent adults. If we continue to shift toward a student-centered approach, I’m eager to see how the educational landscape will evolve to better support holistic learning and development. In biology, structure and function are intertwined giving us great insights to behavior. The same can be true within the educational environment. How we design and build learning experiences will elicit some kind of predictable behavior. Learning sciences examine this and gives us insights into best practices. And one thing we don't want to forget in the pursuit of high-quality learning is that the design of the space can set us up for the functions we are hoping to perform. Though some things we may have to learn on the fly as pertains to the people work in the room, we can be intentional about design and create what I learned today to call a "forcing" function. Providing space to collaborate may force that behavior. It's hard not to talk to people if you're sitting at a table looking right at them. It's much easier to avoid if you are in a desk that sits in a row with your back to the person behind you and a back to the front of you. And for the longest time, we intentionally used rows of desks as the forcing function for a quiet room. But if our goal is to create collaborative learners, consider a collaboration forcing function. Better yet, movable furniture allows you to force many types of behaviors depending on the outcome. From silent reading time to collaborative projects, how you design your space may lend itself better to certain behaviors. If you’re having issues, there may be a disconnect between the structure and function in the approach, whether the lesson or room design. ⍰ What forcing function might you come up with to elicit the behaviors you'd like to see from students? 3 networking mistakes I made pivoting to instructional design (and what I wish I would have done instead) 1. Forgetting to reach out to existing connections Even if someone isn’t an instructional designer They might know someone who is Or even work with one ↳Be sure to leverage your existing network - Classmates and professors - Friends and family - Coworkers 2. Randomly connecting with any “instructional designer” While it was helpful to grow my network, a more effective approach would have been ↳ Connecting with: - People using skills I wanted to learn - Local professionals in my area - Target company employees - Alumni working in ID roles 3. Not following up with new connections I would get really excited seeing “Accepted your connection request” and would stop my outreach there. ↳ Instead I wish I would have: - Taken time to send more notes - Followed up with a thank you - Started a conversation - Asked questions Taking the time to fix these mistakes would have helped me to - Make more connections sooner - Build meaningful relationships faster - Focus on quality over quantity “connections” What lessons have you learned as you’ve networked more? P.S. There’s nothing wrong with making “mistakes” networking! But these practices have helped me build better relationships than when I first started networking 2 years ago!
