“There are good Sales Engineers, there are great Sales Engineers, and then there are Fantastic Sales Engineers, those SEs where one is willing to put the lives of their deals in the hands of. Kim was that SE for me when we worked together at Salesforce. Complex sales cycles were made more simple and conveying messaging of the value to the Customer were very strongly reinforced by Kim and her efforts. Many times Kim was responsible for making the "lightbulb go off" for the Customer. I can't reinforce enough the value that Kim brought to the table.”

You're faced with scope creep on your project. How do you keep the timeline and resources in check?
I prefer to work in a pre-paid fashion. When scope starts drifting, it's then easy to say, "You allocated X hours for this task. If we expand it this way, it'll take up Y additional hours. Where do you want to cut back in order to accommodate this request?" Let them know it's a trade-off and then let them decide what's most important.

Dealing with demanding clients after hours is exhausting. How can you reclaim your work-life balance?
It's hard without support from your management chain, but you can set reasonable boundaries (it helps to start as you mean to go on) and get things done as you're able. Don't answer your phone after hours unless it's something you've arranged ahead of time. For example, sometimes I have to do deployments outside of business hours, but we always know this ahead of time. If your clients are the kind that can have real emergencies, set up a signal when you start your engagement with them that they can use to alert you to that.
