My amazing cousin, Cleven Ticeson (https://lnkd.in/gWis4xX6) , a 14 time Emmy award winning producer for KCTS9 in Seattle, is a hero of mine. I grew up watching the educational shows like Bill Nye and the performing arts they would showcase. He was following the work I have been doing de-siloing the Black professional class working in venture scale entrepreneurship in the Pacific Northwest and composed a news reel covering Dreamward Group that moved me not only because he is my hyper-talented and dear cousin but because it voiced and gave me the perspective of the decades that what we’re building has been missing from the mass culture and my culture. Lewis Rudd once told me that the hardest target to hit is an invisible one and my dear cousin hit me right in the heart by speaking in his video about the unseen, but nonetheless felt, absence of inclusive capitalization of startups. Felt by the generation of Black people that watched the tech industry grow not only painting Black technologists and Black founders out of the heroic saga of tech, but Black funders as well. I am so glad that Dreamward Group is able to paint the target and make it visible through our work. Venture Capital, the financial backing of the tech industry, just like tech itself, had an evolution with foundational moments in the 70s on Sand Hill Road in Silicon Valley yet it’s mechanics, drama, and operation are largely unknown to the public that isn’t working in tech entrepreneurship. It’s trajectory and heights of accomplishment with Andreessen Horowitz and Madrona Ventures are parallel and analogous to Google and Amazon…But only the later two brands are household names to people outside of the industry. The world knows the story of Black people being excluded from Tech, It knows the story of Black people being excluded from executive leadership. It experienced the Obama administration and the depravity of the Trump backlash and had to ask itself why it had actively or passively participated in writing off Black professionals. Some of the world hears of Black founders getting less than 2% of invested capital, but even on hearing that, they don’t know the story of Black people being excluded from the role of deciding which startups get funded using a yet third party’s (often their own government’s) money…That is the story of Venture Capital today, and that’s what Dreamward is changing for the future.

Last week, I had the pleasure of moderating a discussion on navigating FOAK in climate tech at the Greentown Labs Summit in Boston (which had >600 people!!). Here’s a quick rundown of what was shared by Katherine St. James of Spring Lane Capital, Paris Smalls, PhD of Eden GeoPower, and Hannah Friedman of Planeteer Capital: 🌱 What is the definition of FOAK? We discussed how the term can be controversial - it's almost too general because it doesn't identify what kind of "First" FOAK refers to - first team project? First geography? First of a technology in a sector? First time for the integration of a system? It's also too specific because it has the word "first" in it, which can be anathema to later stage / project finance investors. 💰 Partnerships for Funding FOAK Projects We discussed how important it is to build a blended capital stack & use off-balance sheet capital for a project so you're not using the most expensive equity dollars to fund an infrastructure project with low-ish IRR. We also talked through being creative about using corporate partners to provide in-kind services or ink some agreement (at least an LOI) to attract this funding. 🏛 Role of Government We talked about how government capital is seen by investors & how it can be catalytic for FOAK. Government capital can provide validation that a startup has passed a rigorous diligence process by a third party - and incentives like grants or credits can help improve returns for the first project- but it's important to be doing this in conjunction with getting customer validation and to be able to present line of sight to competitive economics without concessionary capital. 👥 Advice for FOAK startups The panelists offered some very specific pieces of advice for startups going through FOAK: how to get creative with things like revenue sharing agreements or convertible notes, getting smart with project development early on (like with DeveloperU), being careful about using FOAK too liberally with certain investor groups, getting the right commercialization / FOAK talent in and around you early Huge thanks to the panelists and the team at Greentown Labs (Jill Kirkpatrick, Julia Travaglini, Aisling Carlson, etc you rocked it!!) for hosting this discussion on bridging the FOAK gap. This is a good and important read on #FOAK projects and the ClimateTech Valley of Death, with good insight from some very sharp investors. One often overlooks aspect of this challenge is WHO will build these early commercial projects that are smaller and don't often appeal to top tier EPCs. The Clean Energy Communities Fund (CECF) was honored to participate in #ClimateWeekNYC by hosting a sold out Breakfast Briefing on 9/25 for donors, allies and collaborators working in communities across the country! Huge thanks to Amalgamated Bank (Ivan Frishberg and Amalgamated's NYC team) for providing the meeting space and being such gracious hosts. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast spread from Zabar’s and some great conversation about the power of communities to help achieve our nation’s climate goals. We want to extend our gratitude to the following collaborators who spoke about their work in communities and how the Clean Energy Communities Fund can accelerate local climate mitigation efforts: Lavonya Jones, Partnership for Southern Equity Saharnaz Mirzazad, AICP, ICLEI Kristen Bennett, Service Year Alliance Robert Dean, Elevate Clare Winterton, The Solutions Project Attendees also heard from Kristi Kimball, Founder & CEO and Nicole Rom, Deputy Director about why the Fund was created and what it aims to accomplish: - The path to zero emissions requires upgrading our homes, buildings and vehicles to run on clean energy. Almost 60% of US greenhouse gas emissions come from these sources. Local policy changes and individual behavior change campaigns are needed in thousands of communities to speed the clean energy transition. - The 2022 Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) created financial incentives for home and vehicle electrification, but 71% of Americans know little or nothing about it. Even after they learn about the IRA, most residents need additional help and encouragement to take action. - The Clean Energy Communities Fund, designed by community-based partners across the country, will help hundreds and eventually thousands of communities reach out via trusted local messengers to millions of residents to build hope, agency and equity by working together to get fossil fuels out of their homes, vehicles and communities. Our focus is a nationwide adoption campaign at the community level, designed for scale. The resounding message from the discussion: #Investingincommunitycapacity for climate action is essential to achieve our emissions reduction goals and make an equitable transition to clean energy.

Prime Coalition has long taken a different tack to climate finance compared to its for-profit brethren. It makes the usual venture-style investments in startups through Azolla Ventures and also helps philanthropists direct their money to climate-related projects that it deems high impact. Trellis Climate follows the latter model with a focus on middle stages, where capital has grown scarce. #climatetech #climateVC #climatefinance

Last week was the "why", this week is the "what" - what data can be helpful in building FOAK projects smarter & more efficiently. This includes: ✅Modularity score ✅Mean cost overruns of comparable projects ✅Estimate size of project ✅Cost of production ...etc. The table in the article is just a sample of what we could use...thinking through what more metrics might be helpful.
