Congratulations to StandUp Ventures portfolio company Max Retail on their $15M USD Series A led by Nosara Capital after an exceptional year of growth! Oh how I love optimization problems, and especially ones that support entrepreneurs 😭 Independent retail shops sit on an average of 22% excess inventory at any given time, representing ~$50K-$200K of financial losses each year. For small businesses that are often the pillars of their communities (& frequently women-owned!), these losses are HUGELY impactful. Before Max Retail, options to recuperate them were extremely limited (discounting items far below cost, sending to consignment, or donating for a tax write-off). Key EMARKETER stat: US ecommerce resale volume will hit $80.60 billion this year, a growth of 3.4% YoY, per our December 2023 forecast. Beyond the chart: Ecommerce resale volume is returning to growth after a 6.9% dip YoY in 2022 and a 2.5% one in 2023, per eMarketer forecast. But it still hasn’t returned to its pandemic high of $85.87 billion in 2021. I've sat on both sides of the M&A table dozens of times. Having a differentiated product with a defensible moat in a healthy market is critically important. Full stop. However, don't under-estimate the importance of demonstrating to the buyer that you have a deep, genuine understanding of your business. For example... Be able to clearly articulate why strategic decisions were made in the past. (What was your rationale? What adjustments did you make and why? What did you learn?) Be able to logically and reasonably describe how and why gross margins, growth rates, profitability, retention rates, etc. will improve over time. Know the language of your buyer...e.g. if you're a SaaS business seeking an investment from Private Equity, you must know what they mean by bookings, net revenue retention, gross margins, CAC, payback, cash EBITDA, etc. Further, when asked about these things, your ability to answer immediately with confidence and specificity ("$24.2M" is a MUCH better answer than "I think it's about $24 or $25M...but I can confirm with our investment banker"). This instills a level of comfort with the buyer, which generates real value in how excited they will get about the investment / acquisition and maybe even the price they're willing to pay. It may feel superficial, but someone that is going to write a check for tens or hundreds of millions of dollars wants to feel confident that you and your team are locked in on the economic engine of your business and can speak to it in black-and-white metrics. Obviously, I can't scientifically put a number or percentage to what this is worth, but I can tell you that I've been in the room with the people writing the big checks and have been engaged in the deal team debates on whether or not to buy and at what price. A seller that knows the "secret sauce" of their business, the levers that can be pulled, and the data that tells the objective story greatly increases the likelihood of a fast and high-value outcome. ************ P.S. Even if you don't plan to sell or take on a majority investment, run your business like you are. Your leadership team's ability to speak a common, data-driven language will allow you to make better decisions faster.

After the first deep dive discussion w/ founders I often hear a comment "I wish I had heard about this alternative [to all-in must-become-a-unicorn] way to build a startup earlier as I have wasted years in pursuing the wrong thing". Our mission is that no founder would ever need to say that again as it is such a waste. Us preaching the gospel 1:1 just doesn't scale, hence we use mass media to multiply our efforts - that's how Gorillacast came to be. The 1st episode is out, featuring yours truly. "How can you know what food you like unless you taste everything" said a chef. How can founders make informed choices about the best strategy for them to follow unless they know of all alternatives? I enjoyed going on Nick Telson-Sillett’s podcast, Pitch Deck by Forward Pursuit. Nick is a serial founder and investor (founded and exited DesignMyNight) so knows both sides of the table which always makes for an enriching chat. Some things we discussed: - The perceived power dynamic between VCs and founders can hinder productive conversations. - A compelling product demo can significantly influence investor interest. - Founders must focus on solving real customer problems to succeed. - Hiring standards are crucial for building a successful startup team. - Behavioural roadblocks can prevent the adoption of new solutions. - Validation from potential customers is key for pre-revenue startups. - The early-stage funding landscape has become more efficient and selective. - Pace of execution is a critical factor in attracting investment.

🗞️ Breaking News: Red Ventures Selling CNET at a huge Loss❗️ Context: Red Ventures, the privately held digital media and marketing juggernaut based in Fort Mill, South Carolina, is selling CNET, one of the largest tech publishers on the web, to Ziff Davis for just $100 million. For context: Red Ventures bought CNET for approximately $500 million. Reason for the Sale: Total traffic to CNET has dropped by a staggering 50% over the last three years. The main driver behind this decline is a 68% drop in organic traffic (loss off Google rankings and traffic). Tables turned: This sale is a stunning turn of events for CNET, which once bought Ziff Davis (then a tech magazine firm) in a deal worth roughly $1.6 billion - more than two decades ago. Catch Up: - Ziff Davis trades publicly with a market value of $1.94 billion. The company lost about half of its marketcap over the course of the last 48 months. Strategic rationale: If Ziff Davis is able to ink a content licencing deal with Google, Bing/Microsoft or ChatGPT (or else e.g. X.AI) - like Reddit did - it might turn out to be a very smart deal …
