“The approach requires significantly increasing building energy efficiency, reducing onsite building emissions, transforming the grid edge at buildings, and reducing building life cycle emissions – all while prioritizing equity, affordability and resilience,” according to a DOE report. Since #buildings are responsible for 40 percent of global #emissions, institutional and #commercial #facilities play a vital role in achieving that goal, but there are many signs that the U.S. is behind in those efforts. An expert on existing buildings said at a conference a year ago that at the current rate, it will take 60 years to retrofit all current buildings to achieve #decarbonization.  “There are plenty of existing buildings with lots of work to be done on improving their basic #energy #efficiency,” says Alexi Miller, the director of building innovation at New Buildings Institute. As Massachusetts residents and businesses convert to electric energy, the state’s current electric grid system is struggling to meet new demands. The region’s leading energy providers, Eversource and National Grid, are seeking state approval for billion-dollar projects to update grid infrastructure. Think Microgrid | State Scorecard 2023 EXECUTIVE SUMMARY "Microgrids have the potential to play a pivotal role at a transformative moment for the electric grid. As communities and consumers seek solutions for the resilience, climate and equity challenges they face, the combination of advanced technology and market interest provide the opportunity for the widespread commercialization of microgrids. The U.S. Department of Energy has advanced a vision that by 2035, microgrids will be the core building block of a transformed grid where 30-50% of electricity generation comes from distributed resources. This vision, however, is not inevitable and there remain potentially existential barriers to microgrid commercialization. Over the past two years, Think Microgrid has led conversations with regulators and industry stakeholders about how to best identify and characterize these opportunities and impediments. From these discussions, a robust and extensible methodology was articulated that considers policy and market conditions in each state across five critical dimensions – deployment, regulation, resilience, market access and equity. The resulting State Scorecard is at once disappointing and encouraging. On the one hand, only a few states receive even a “B” and far too many receive a “C” or “D”. On the other hand, the results suggest how states can proactively and creatively begin to immediately take action to reform outdated policies and collaboratively move toward the coordinated action that this moment deserves." Some very exciting and important work being undertaken in the USA. Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is deeply involved in the project. “To supply power to homes and businesses, electric utilities and system operators work around the clock to balance supply of electricity with demand. The rapid addition of customer-owned solar and other distributed energy resources (DERs) requires changing distribution and transmission grid operations to maintain high quality power delivery that customers rely on. DERs change the flow of electricity on the grid while opening new opportunities to utilize grid edge resources to reduce power outages and accelerate recovery from power system disturbances. These developments underline the criticality of securing effective sensor technologies to gain greater visibility of this transforming grid. The power sector needs data integration using industry standards and open-source tools can make that data available, understandable, and actionable. Real operational improvement happens when data analytics are utilized to improve grid flexibility and reliability. To that end, Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) is leading two multi-year projects with Vermont Electric Power Company (VELCO) and Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) funded by DOE Office of Electricity (OE) Sensors and Data Analytics program. “ It is all about the data, real time data and feedback loops. This is not just “metering” - more importantly it’s monitoring - and happens right to the grid edge. The Australian Energy Market Commission (AEMC) is undertaking a big body of work through multiple Rule Changes but the most important is the Energy Consumers Australia RTDA [Real Time Data Access] Rule Change Proposal. https://lnkd.in/gGeS-Dy5 It will facilitate whole of home functions using EIoT and provide data and feedback loops using broadband internet for essential digitalisation of the Distribution Network to drive both network productivity and Energy Cost Efficiency.
