This #incident affected a wide range of individuals, including residents, employees, and others who interacted with Dallas County's public services. The county, known as the second largest in #Texas with over 2.6 million residents, faced a significant data breach when the Play ransomware gang added Dallas to its extortion portal on the dark web. After the attack, #Dallas promptly acknowledged the situation and assured the public that they were actively reviewing the #leaked data. To address concerns and provide support to those impacted, Dallas set up a dedicated call center in January 2024. Yesterday, Dallas County issued an update on its #website, confirming the #databreach and sending out notices to the 201,404 affected individuals. The types of exposed data varied per individual, highlighting the severity and complexity of the #breach. This serves as a reminder of the ongoing #threat posed by cybercriminals and the importance of robust #cybersecurity measures to safeguard personal information. Hackers recently accessed the computer network of CentroMed and “acquired” patient information, the San Antonio-based healthcare provider said May 17. An investigation revealed that an “unauthorized party accessed some of its systems on or about Apr. 30″ and “accessed and/or acquired files that contain information pertaining to CentroMed’s current and former patients.” CentroMed estimates that the total number of victims affected by the incident is approximately 400,000, according to JDSupra. CentroMed operates over 25 primary care clinics, pharmacies, and other healthcare facilities, in and around San Antonio, New Braunfels, and Somerset, Texas. CentroMed employs more than 517 people and generates approximately $93 million in annual revenue. These damaging digital strikes underscored the critical need for local governments to improve their cybersecurity defenses and recovery protocols. 2. While there's debate over ransom payments, their role as a financing tool for cybercriminals is concerning. Ann Neuberger, White House deputy national security adviser for cyber, reported ransom payments of over $1.3 billion in 2023. This highlights the need for countermeasures, like introducing controls to discourage payouts, even as immediate payment is crucial in certain sectors like healthcare. 3.
