The headlines only capture a fraction of the story regarding the tumultuous relationship between veterinarians and social media. Despite its drawbacks, I'm convinced that it can lead to tremendous success when a practice is built on a solid and healthy foundation. 2012 "One of the reasons veterinarians have been reluctant to jump on the social media bandwagon has been lack of evidence that it works—that it brings in more clients. Anecdotally, practices say that it does but there is no hard evidence." 2014 "Some observers believe social media will grow beyond mere outreach and marketing to existing and potential clients." 2016 "Social Media is The Last Thing your Business Should Do 2018 "Your online reputation is the cornerstone of your success and will likely dictate future success as well." 2019"Social Media Attacks Towards Veterinary Professionals" 2021"Lots of online love for veterinarians during pandemic" 2024 "A robust social media presence boosts the visibility of a veterinary clinic , reaching potential new clients and reminding existing ones of the services available. Social media platforms also offer targeted advertising options that can reach specific demographics, such as pet owners in a particular geographic area. The veterinary field is buzzing with conversations about midlevel practitioners, especially after Colorado’s recent approval of Veterinary Professional Associates (VPAs)🏥🐾 So, what’s changing? His tips in managing this critical issues provides insights for cattle producers to be more prepared during calving season. As Dr. White explains, calves that struggle during birth may have difficulty nursing right away, which is a critical concern. They need to consume colostrum—the first milk rich in antibodies—within hours to build immunity. If dystocia delays nursing, it can leave calves vulnerable to early diseases, highlighting the importance of always having high-quality colostrum on hand. With a new simulator, Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine students can practice delivering a calf in a realistic—but lower-stakes—way. “There’s so much value in letting students practice in a low-stress scenario where we can pause at any time to talk it through, without being worried about how long we’re taking to get the calf out,” said Taika von Königslöw, an assistant professor of ambulatory and production medicine. Dr. Ariana Hinckley-Boltax co-authors a research study to develop a prioritized list of clinical presentations in dogs, cats, and horses. The manuscript will be published in the Journal of Veterinary Medical Education to inform curriculum design and exam blueprinting. "Patients don’t walk in the door with a diagnosis most of the time. Students need to learn how to work up and reason through problems. Designing curriculum around clinical presentations requires immense collaboration across disciplines to integrate content in that authentic way—it’s hard to do. This study is a good step in the direction of inspiring institutions to do that collaboration. If learning is hard, it’s probably effective learning. If teaching is hard, it’s probably effective teaching, so I think that collaborative presentation-based approach is worth the effort." I like the org chart presentation for evaluating EBITDA. I would also consider the following... Under Evaluate Revenue: 1. # of invoices - reported in the format, YTD Jun 2024 next to YTD Jun 2023 for example. Of course, add % Change and $ Change. Apply the same format below. 2. Avg Client/Patient Transactions 3. New Clients 4. Lost Clients (18 months or older) 5. Doctor Count - full-time equivalent (FTE) 6. Total Doctor Compensation ($). Assumes owner comp is set at fair market value (FMV). 7. Total Compensation ($) These 7 data points will tell the 'revenue story' and at minimum, point you in the right direction to course correct. *Do Not Use trailing twelve months (TTM/LTM). Under Evaluate COGS: 1. Addition by subtraction - simplify your supplies, do you need 3 different kinds of the same thing, multiplied by 20? 2. Renegotiate with suppliers and vendors - most bang for the buck, rarely done effectively or often enough. Under Evaluate Labor: 1. I would replace overpaying and overstaffing with labor efficiency and stability. Under Evaluate Other: 1. I would skip this section, it is immaterial and not worth the time and effort.

Why is veterinary medicine such an easy target? I've been thinking about the recent cardiologist and his baseless claims, not because he is special but because he's not. Because this is not the first time someone has accused veterinary medicine of being greedy and solely profit-driven. So why Vet Med? In my mind, it is because Vet Med has a peculiar hangup with money. Unlike, any other profession or industry, Vet Med has an uncomfortable relationship with the cost of veterinary care, to the extent that success is even met with guilt. You don't see financial professionals, for instance, misunderstanding the connection between the value of services and money, not to mention time and expertise. They do not have an unhealthy relationship with what they charge or their fees. Charging what you must for your services does not diminish your passion for animals. Most pet parents understand this. We don't want vet professionals to sacrifice their livelihood or compromise the level of care in hospitals. Don't lose sleep over people like this cardiologist. But take a stand like Michele Forbes, DVM, BBA, Christine Stafford (she/her), and many others because this won't stop with The New York Times soliciting for the most outlandish stories so that they can paint the entire profession with one brush stroke.
