If you've never had the opportunity to listen to Jeff Jones (CEO of H&R Block) this pod gives some great insight into his leadership style. Full disclosure, a big part of the discussion is the impact sports and coaching has had on his management practices - and I do get a mention. But that's not the reason to share. This connection between sports/business coaching/leadership, development and achievement is often referenced, but seldom are the parallels as clearly defined as they are in this discussion between Don Yaeger and Jeff.

A few entry level jobs

With NFL Season starting this week I am running a new tipping comp with the following format. Pick 3 teams each week of the NFL season to win matches. Condition 1 - Every team must be picked during season Condition 2 - No team can be picked more than twice. Scoring - If selection wins - you get the total points of the game (Win 28-21, result would be +49)        - If selection loses, you get penalised the total points of the game (Lose 17-14, result would be -31)        - If selection ends tied (after OT) - result would be zero points Two rounds will be assigned double points for all players. Round 4 (the last round before byes for the season) and Round 17 (towards end of comp, with most games likely to hold playoff implications). Thursday Night Football selections to be in an hour before kickoff, otherwise the deadline is 11pm on Sunday. All tips will be published and sent out by email. If no tips are submitted the players score for each game will be zero, not a crippling penalty but certainly unlikely to help them contend. An example of how the scoring will work is below. Entry fee will be $50, with all money paid out, structure to be finalised onece numbers are locked in. Opportunity alert 🚨 for Nike employees laid off or still employed. I’ve made many connections with Nike employees over the years as well as other sports companies. I seen that Nike is getting rid of 740 employees at Oregon. If you are one of the 740 Instead of looking for another company why don’t you review my inventions & if you think Nike can work with it & pitch it higher up. The company is famed for its fighting gambling spirit as shown in the film Air look what the gamble paid off there. Why should Nike gamble on me ? Well with one of my inventions is already in X2 #Premierleague clubs and #NBA club & been trusted by many other pro athletes gaining excellent reviews. This has been done without a team of designers, makers, marketers etc. I have to date, 1) A newly designed sports sock that will help reduce injury & improve performance ( soccer related ) prototype complete, patent pending 2) A newly designed soccer cleat ( soccer related ) (design stage) 3) A rehab station focusing on goalkeepers (soccer, rugby, American football ) (design stage) 4) A newly designed espadrilee/ sandal which will promote foot health benefits ( all athletes ) (Prototype complete) 5) A full body rehab station ( all athletes) (Prototype complete) 6) A device that works the abs extra hard whilst performing leg extension exercises. (Prototype complete) 7) Myomitt - stretches & strengthens muscles in the hands, wrists & forearms ( all athletes) (Product complete) 8) Foot station that does the same as Myomitt but for the muscles in the feet & ankles. (All athletes) (Prototype complete) I believe if a company like Nike taken on these designs with the added input & work from the specialists these could do really well. I’d like to add this isn’t solely for Nike employees I have in fact pitched the Myomitt to Adidas gaining interest in the Myomitt from both companies. Sometimes it pays to look outside your company for the innovation, Just look what Craig Johnston did with the Adidas Predator it got rejected by numerous sports manufacturers including Adidas only to be accepted later once he had a video of the German team playing in them. I’m not saying these inventions are going to save 740 jobs but they could save some if they impress the powers that be & get a design project going on them. One thing MLS clubs do better than most Build fan communities... Supporter clubs are subgroups of fans, created by fans, typically rallied around a specific cause. Clubs even promote the support groups on their website. Atlanta Untied has six official supporter groups, each with a bit of a different purpose using the team as the connective glue. If you search Atlanta United on Google, "supporter groups" is the second link that comes up. . . . Fans are almost self-segmenting themselves to create their own unique identity, experience, and association with the club. Teams in other leagues have tried to manufacture this concept, but it seems hard to replicate if you don't have fans leading the charge. MLS clubs allowing these groups to be known and associated with the club adds a layer of credibility and develops an even deeper association with the club than if the supporter groups were unofficially tied to the team. I’m officially a free agent again on the writing/media side of things. Last Tuesday was my last day at Better Collective. As those who follow the sports industry more intently might already know, the company let go of over 100 employees in a budget restructuring effort, and I was one of them. I’m in the process of sorting out all the final logistics. I didn’t know what to expect when I was first reached out to about joining the company – I was unfamiliar with the betting side of the sports writing industry and my original role was more behind-the-scenes, but I couldn’t have been happier with my two and a half years at BC. While I’ve been a part of the sports media mix for over half of my life now, this was my first true full-time job in the industry with a major company, and I learned a ton both in terms of my skillset and myself. The role gave me direction and confidence at a time that I sorely needed it and that will forever be appreciated. I’m disappointed it’s over, but also understand the realities of the business. In particular, I want to thank JD McNamara for taking a chance on me back in 2022, Greg Warren for being an incredible editor to work with, and everyone else on our BC Canada team, past and present, for being both tremendous talents and even better people. Our whole staff made logging on or getting together an absolute joy while still challenging me to get a little bit better every day. I’ll be rooting hard for everyone sticking around or heading to new things, both within our team and throughout the company. As for what's next, I'm not 100% sure yet, but I'm working on it. For certain, I’m going to be investing more time and effort into the other side of my work in Markham. The Royals continue to navigate a rebuild, with this very young group beginning to catch its groove over the past few weeks. If there’s a gear beyond “all-in”, it’s time to find it now. My passion is on the operations side of the game – I’ve learned so much since first getting involved back in 2018, and I’d like to continue to nurture that and see where it takes me. More immediately, I’m deeply invested in getting this team where to it wants to be. I would also like to keep writing and/or creating, and have lots of ideas for what could come next there. The digital hockey landscape has changed a lot over the past few years, and I feel like I still have a lot to give to it with a fuller focus. If anyone is interested in bringing me on board with their platform or collaborating in some way, my inboxes (DM on here or various social, email via [email protected]) are open. A return to self-operating is also on the table, as I’d love to take another crack at it with a sharper toolset and more flexibility. Obviously, these aren’t ideal, but I’m excited to look forward and make the most out of it!

As it relates to yesterday's news on MLB x Boardroom, here's a flashback to a feature from 7/1/23 regarding the league's Player Marketing initiatives 📸 : "That cadence developed over the years by dividing the [Marketing] department into small groups with different overlapping focuses. One group is focused specifically on the player social program, including the daily distribution of content, customization of graphics, and hype videos that go out to the players through Greenfly. That group works closely with the entire marketing department, design teams, and live content teams while also lending photographers and videographers to players for off-field events. Another focus is player marketing relations and helping with players’ off-field experiences and initiatives. Player marketing was able to organize more than 30 off-the-field player activations during the season, including getting players backstage at concerts, sporting events, and other notable functions, embedding them into pop culture and gaining them publicity in what Timpone [MLB's EVP, CMO] called cultural crossovers. A crucial player marketing function is also supporting players with their charitable events and philanthropic endeavors. Whether that’s a charity or foundation event, a youth clinic, or a gala, player marketing offers support with marketing coverage and the opportunity for a player to take over an MLB social channel or coverage from one of the league’s YouTube original shows."
