Authors, stop taking publishing so personally. (I’m putting on my tough mama hat for this one.) → The publishing world is not against you. → Traditional publishers aren’t villains—they’re just doing their job: selling books. It’s transactional, not personal. I hear the complaints constantly. Angry editors and book coaches love to rant: ⛔️ "Publishers don’t care about you as an author." You're right. They care about who BUYS books, not who writes them. ⛔️ "They’ll take away your authority if you sign with them." Exactly. You’re asking them to sell your book, so why would they let you call the shots? Your book is a product. Period. As soon as your manuscript becomes a book, it’s no longer "your baby." Decisions publishers make about it—titles, edits, covers, even the angle—come down to one thing: market value. → Publishers' choices aren’t always right. → But their thinking is. And sure, you can self-publish. But if you want your book to sell, you’ll still need to think like a publisher. So stop whining and start aligning—with the business side of books. How do you edit your own work? This is a great episode of one of my favorite podcasts, Making Sense. Sam Harris interviews award-winning writer George Saunders. During the episode, Saunders discusses how he revises his own work. He tries to detach himself and read the piece as if it were for the first time. This is EXCELLENT advice. And it works great if you leave the work alone for a bit, even if it is just overnight. Revising and rewriting are critical to the writing process. They ARE the writing process. Are You Writing with Purpose? Here's What You Need to Know. When I started out as a copywriter, I didn’t realize how important it was to have a clear purpose behind every word I wrote. It was easy to just put something down, hoping it would connect. But over time, I learned that without purpose, even the best-sounding copy can fall flat. Now, whenever I sit down to write, I always ask myself: What’s the goal here? And here are some of the reasons I’ve found out writing copy or email. 1. To Spark Curiosity. "Have you heard how this tool can revolutionize your workflow?" Sometimes, it’s all about making someone pause and think. Just enough to make them want to learn more. 2. To Create Urgency. "Only 3 spots left! Don’t miss out on your chance to join." If I want someone to act quickly, I use urgency. It’s amazing how much more people respond when there’s a ticking clock. 3.To Show Gratitude. "Thank you for being a valued customer. Here’s a 10% discount to show our appreciation." A simple thank you can go a long way, especially when you're building relationships with clients or customers. 4. To Invoke FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) "Everyone is talking about this—don’t be the last to know!" FOMO is real! I’ve seen it work countless times. When people feel like they’re missing out, they’re more likely to jump in. 5.To Send a Reminder. Just a reminder: Your special offer expires tonight at midnight." We all need reminders, right? Sometimes people just need a nudge to take action. 6. To Establish Trust. "Join over 10,000 satisfied clients who trust us with their business." I’ve learned that trust-building is key in copywriting. People need to feel safe before making decisions. 7. To Motivate Action "Ready to take your business to the next level? Start today!" It’s all about giving people that push to take the next step—whether it's buying, subscribing, or signing up. 8. To Educate. "Did you know that 90% of buyers make decisions based on emotions?" Some copy is purely about giving people the info they need to make informed decisions. 9. To Build a Connection. "We understand your struggles because we’ve been there too." When I want to connect with my audience on a deeper level, I make sure they know I relate to their challenges. 10. To Entertain. "Picture this: Your dream vacation...and how you could be there in 5 easy steps." People like to be entertained. Do you have to be a good copywriter to be a good copyeditor? As a writer, a key part of the process is editing your own work, but what about editing other people's work? If you can write well, does that mean you can edit well? I don't think so. Over the past couple of years I've found myself doing a LOT of editing of other people's copy. One of the key skills is being able to articulate why a piece of copy needs to be changed, why the sentences need to be shuffled around, why word choices need replacing. Being a good writer doesn't necessarily mean you have these skills. But, to be a great editor, you also need to be a great copywriter. Do you agree?
