Radio & TV broadcast news management: This report summarizes a two-hour interview (with my sister-in-law, a school committee chair in Maine), so I don't expect you to read it. But if you simply skim the first several paragraphs, you'll get-the-drift.   Knowing that your news people are busy, I don't ask their time casually. Believe in the Embargo 🔒 As someone who’s led a newsroom editorial team, I can say with confidence: respecting the embargo is a core value in newsroom culture. 📅 It’s a brilliant way to gauge interest while being fully transparent about what you have to offer. Some worry that news might slip out ahead of time, but a well-placed embargo is built on trust, and it will be honoured. This extra time lets editorial teams truly understand the story, plan the elements, and gather crucial feedback from editors and reporters involved. This means you get a fully prepped story ready to go the second the embargo lifts – no scrambling, no last-minute fixes. Trust is at the heart of any good embargo, and using this tool shows that you’re committed to respecting the newsroom’s process. Last night in my “Business of TV” class at Gabelli School MS in Media Management / Fordham Gabelli School of Business, we dove into how television—whether broadcast, cable, or streaming, etc.—generates revenue. We explored the differences between single vs. dual revenue streams and how advertising has evolved in the OTT landscape. We also had a lively discussion on pricing. An article we read mentioned that Americans spend an average of $46 per month on streaming services (not including internet costs) and typically subscribe to 2.9 services. But how much is too much? As the possibility password sharing fades and each user bears the full cost, what’s the threshold we’re willing to pay for content? Can we adapt to consuming less content? Would we become even more accepting of ads? And yes, the sports fans in class showed they’re willing to spend more given the fragmented sports viewing landscape. Paramount reported third quarter earnings before the bell on Friday that showed further improvement in its streaming business as it gets ready to combine with Skydance Media. The media giant posted its second quarter of profit in a row for the segment. For the first nine months of the year, streaming losses stand at $211 million, a nearly $1 billion improvement from the $1.18 billion the company lost through the first nine months of last year. But overall revenue in the quarter missed expectations as the company booked continued declines in its linear TV business and saw a pullback in its studios segment. THREE (3) REASONS LOCAL TV NEWS IS THE MOST TRUSTED & VALUED By Hadassa Gerber In a year of the unpredictable, where a presidential election can be rearranged in the blink of an eye, hurricanes can make their entrance in the unprecedented month of June and the economic outlook weighs heavily on consumers – audiences may wonder where to turn for consistent, reliable news. A recent study commissioned by TVB and conducted by Dynata sheds light on just how crucial local TV news remains in the daily lives of its viewers across America. The study, which surveyed over 3,000 respondents, unearthed several compelling insights that underscore the pivotal role of local broadcast TV in people's lives: A Trusted Source Local broadcast TV was the most trusted news source while social media was the least trusted. Whether someone is experiencing severe weather, following a sports team, or tracking a key election race, most respondents turn to local broadcast TV news to keep them informed. The study also found that 76 percent of those who use station websites/apps also consume local TV news on television, highlighting the complementary role these platforms play in viewers' media diets. As several of our studies have shown, it's not "either or," it's "and." Localism: Strong Connection with their Communities Among its viewers, local broadcast TV news is the number one source for news, not just local news, but all news in general. And why is that? Local TV stations have cultivated strong brands over decades, rooted in their ability to deliver news that is not only relevant but deeply connected to the communities they serve. Half of local news viewers select it as being the most involved in their local community. Eight out of 10, specifically cited hat they "want information that pertains to the area I live in" as the top reason for watching local TV. Viewer Commitment and Consistency Further, we found that nine out of 10 respondents watch local broadcast TV news at least once a week with most of them watching daily. They value it so much that 73 percent said they were likely to drop a provider or look for other options if they stopped carrying their local news station. Local broadcast TV news is the lifeblood of local communities. It is unique in its ability to deliver news from a local perspective, foster community engagement, and build enduring trust. Local broadcast TV provides a great venue for advertisers wanting to associate with a trusted, believable platform, to showcase their product and services. Data worth seeing. So much of the reporting about the “loss of news reporting” conflates newspapers with the whole of the profession. In fact, the data shows (and the data has been showing for many years) that the number of journalists working in television, digital and other mediums is stable or growing. So the oft-reported “death of reporting” is, in fact, the demise of some mediums of reporting and journalism — to be replaced by others. But not the death of reporting or journalism. Rather, a dynamic technological revolution. Not doom. Just inevitable change. Leaders navigate change. The future of news is there for those who are looking.

Huge news developed over the weekend for news organizations in New York after the state’s governor signed the 2025 state budget which brings significant support to local journalism through the "Newspaper and Broadcast Media Jobs Program," allocating $90 million in tax credits for news outlets. 🎉 Spearheaded by the Empire State Local News Coalition, the legislation is the largest state commitment to community news organizations in the country, offering guaranteed tax credits for three years and prioritizing smaller outlets. 💪 This news is huge for news organizations. Not only does it provide them financial assistance but creates opportunity to bolster news staffs to provide even more content to the communities they serve. 📰 This legislation isn’t only good for news organizations but it’s a great thing for communities in New York. The funding will provide citizens vital information about what is happening in their towns, hold officials accountable and help the public live a better quality of life, through the important content these news organizations create. 🏙️ There are caps on annual credits per newsroom, based on employee count, and exclusions for publicly traded corporations are included.
