Although there is still progress to be made, women’s representation on public company boards continues to grow. Our 2024 Michigan Women’s Leadership Report, created in partnership with Wayne State University - Mike Ilitch School of Business, measures the progress of women in Michigan public companies and illustrates trends taking place nationally. An October 2023 report from The Conference Board reported that 86% of S&P 500 corporate boards had three or more women directors, up from 47% in 2018. Ten (91%) of Michigan’s 11 S&P 500 companies had three or more directors in 2023, up from four (36%) in 2018. “[#CHILDCARE] COMMUNITY SOLUTIONS TAKE ROOT” Yes, they are! Quite a lot, actually. Over and over again, when I read about promising progress in addressing childcare affordability, quality, access, and equity, I see one common theme: LOCAL PARTNERSHIPS. The mix of public-private partnerships varies considerably: sometimes state, county, municipal, and/or school districts; sometimes nonprofits; sometimes philanthropy: increasingly, #business; and, sometimes, someone or something that I’ve never thought of…but almost ALL locally-responsive, locally-designed, and locally-leveraged partnerships. As a fundraiser, one of the biggest parts of my job is connecting with others. But I have a little secret: I’m not great at remembering names. I can see someone across the room and KNOW that I know them. Then a name pops into my head, and I think, "Nope, that's definitely not their name." Now the wrong name is stuck in a loop, and I’m walking up to them anyway, praying the right name will surface. Ever been there? This makes me reflect on the best ways to engage in big, crowded situations. Enter the name tag. Think about it: how awkward is it to approach someone you know you’ve met before, only to draw a blank when trying to recall their name? I know I’m not alone in this. Whenever I admit my struggles with name recall, people respond with, “Oh my gosh! Me too!” It’s normal, it’s common, and it’s definitely solvable. So, let’s embrace the name tag at these events and spare someone else the discomfort of trying to fish your name from their memory. Then we can dive into the real connections!

Addressing Housing Insecurity As public health professionals, we understand the profound impact that housing has on health outcomes. In Southern Indiana, numerous organizations are dedicated to addressing housing insecurities, particularly for our veterans. These efforts are crucial in ensuring access to safe, stable, and affordable housing, which is foundational to overall well-being. Here are key resources available in our region: Hoosier Veterans Assistance Foundation (HVAF): Provides housing, employment, and basic needs support to veterans and their families, aiding their transition from homelessness to self-sufficiency. Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA): Offers programs aimed at increasing affordable housing opportunities and providing supportive services. Monroe County United Ministries (MCUM): Located in Bloomington, MCUM offers emergency services, including housing assistance, to families and individuals in crisis. Shalom Community Center: A comprehensive resource center providing transitional and permanent supportive housing to individuals experiencing homelessness in Monroe County. New Hope for Families: Focused on families with children, providing emergency shelter and supportive services to help families achieve stable housing. Centerstone: Offers housing assistance programs that support individuals in finding and maintaining stable housing, alongside mental health and substance use services. Volunteers of America Ohio & Indiana: Provides a wide range of services to veterans, including housing support, employment services, and health care. Amethyst House: Based in Bloomington, offers supportive housing and recovery services for individuals dealing with substance use disorders. These organizations and many others play a crucial role in mitigating housing insecurities in Southern Indiana. As public health professionals, we have a responsibility to support these efforts and advocate for the health of our communities. A key state Biohealth Tech Hub workforce project aims to connect #underserved communities with #employment gaps across the sector. That’s according to Mark Thomas, EdD, chief strategy officer for Madison Area Technical College, a tech hub consortium member that’s leading the project. He spoke yesterday during BioForward #Wisconsin’s Wisconsin BioHealth Summit in Madison, highlighting the #ABCPathways program. “We are at peak population, and so we have this almost existential #laborshortage, right? And yet we have populations that are historically underserved with low employment and #lowincome,” he said, adding “this is what we’re trying to do, is solve that labor-economics problem.” This effort falls under the states’ #techhub effort, which has a focus on #precisionmedicine and related industries such as #biotechnology #manufacturing.
