As reported by Becker's Healthcare, the American Medical Association's latest report paints a sobering picture of commercial health insurance markets: nearly half are dominated by a single payer holding 50% or more market share. In Alabama, it's a jaw-dropping 86% held by BCBS. Other states like Kentucky, Michigan, and Louisiana aren't far behind, with one insurer controlling two-thirds of the market. When one company runs the show, competition—and potentially, consumer options—takes a backseat. According to The North American Menopause Society, most women experience menopause between ages 40 and 58. But some start having symptoms earlier through Perimenopause. It was such an honor to host and moderate this valuable and needed discussion alongside Faustina Nevarez MD, Women's Health Medical Director AltaMed Health Services, and my colleague Deb Gonzales from our BSC Elevating Women and Generations Alliance ERGs. We discussed the effects that menopause has in our bodies, the treatments, and how to best prepare to be our own health advocates. A majority of employer healthcare plans typically fail to reduce costs and deliver healthier outcomes for three fundamental reasons: Failure to detect disease at early stages Failure to funnel plan members to the most effective/efficient care A poorly negotiated PBM contract There are certainly other factors, but if an employer cannot solve these three core challenges, almost nothing else matters because cost containment will be nearly impossible. If you do not have partners that can solve these issues, then you do not have partners.

2025 𝙊𝙥𝙚𝙣 𝙀𝙣𝙧𝙤𝙡𝙡𝙢𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝘾𝙝𝙚𝙘𝙠𝙡𝙞𝙨𝙩 - To get ready for open enrollment, employers who sponsor group health plans should be aware of compliance changes affecting the design and administration of their health plans for plan years beginning on or after Jan. 1, 2025. These changes include limits that are adjusted for inflation each year, such as the Affordable Care Act’s ACA) affordability percentage and cost-sharing limits for high deductible health plans (HDHPs). Employers should review their health plan’s design to confirm that it has been updated, as necessary, for these changes. During this season of thanks, I am proud to share more about the #FoodAsMedicine partnership between @Feeding America and Elevance Health Foundation. The program supports – and brings together – 21 food banks to advance healthcare partnership interventions. By linking food assistance with medical support, access to nutritious food is improved and health and well-being can be enhanced for people facing food insecurity. Here's how: 🔍 Comprehensive Screenings: More than 529,000 individuals have been screened for food insecurity during healthcare visits. 🤝 Supportive Referrals: Nearly 90,000 people who tested positive for food insecurity were referred to Food as Medicine programming, and 15,000 were referred to SNAP.  🍎 Nutritious Food Assistance: More than 76,000 individuals have received wholesome food assistance, prioritizing low-sodium, whole grains, and fresh produce options to support health. 🏥 Healthcare Partnerships: 21 food banks work with local clinics and medical centers to reach those in need, integrating food assistance with critical healthcare services. 📈 Positive Outcomes: Programs like The Food Farmacy at Regional Food Bank of Northeast NY, in partnership with St. Peter's Health Partners, witnessed significant health improvements among participants, including stabilized A1C levels and improved weight management.
