Scaling your agency isn’t about doing what you do now…but with more clients. (It’s also not about burning out with the hope of a payout someday) → It’s about intentionally building a business that has room to grow. I’ve never really told you all what I actually do for a living, so here you go Pisgah Peaks Ventures builds & manages fractional marketing team for SMBs that are doing under 10-15 M ARR. The teams could be anywhere from 2 to 20+ individuals. Hiring for PT marketing roles can be a big drain on small businesses. They're unsure of who to hire, how to train, and they def don't want to manage them. This keeps costs in check (no office space here!) + avoids costly benefits / W2 wages. Perfect clients for us? B2B companies with 1-2 internal marketing team members Dispensaries with 2-5 locations. Soloprenuers who are scaling from 6 > 7 figures. A few years ago we started investing into other small businesses & at this point have equity in a handful of other SMBs. The goal? Should our top of funnel blog content just be micro social posts instead? I'm thinking specifically of "thought leadership" topics with little to no search intent. And little to no conversion attached to them. The ideas could be great. They could drive demand around the larger “why” of your company. But it’s not worth writing a 1500 word post that gets no traffic. Social is a content platform. Not a distribution channel for links back to your site. Companies desperately need to start using it like one. PS. Not everything has to be a blog :)

Agencies shouldn't have advertised minimums. Yet...many do. I hear the following from agencies, often. "If they don't have $X per month, we don't want to chat with them" A better reframe is "most of our clients spend $X per month with us" The reason I think it's worth it to explore, most of the time, is because I see budgets balloon every single day. In 2024 alone, I've seen the following. - Brand came to me with a budget of $20k/mo. Ended up signing a retainer for close to $100k/mo. - Brand came to me with a budget of $7k/mo. Ended up signing a retainer for $15k/mo. - Brand came to me with a budget of $10k/mo. Ended up signing a retainer for $30k/mo. - Brand came to me with a (project) budget of $50k. Ended up with a budget of $200k. Agencies who want to grow, should explore. They have to. You'll potentially waste some time. But, you'll potentially find some great clients. When agencies tell me they have minimums, I joke, that brands don't always walk around with a sign on their forehead with their budget on it. To get to the big budgets, you have to be willing to talk about the small stuff, sometimes. If you do, and you think long term v short, over time, you'll be really really really really really glad you did.

There are certain agencies I consistently hear terrible things about. There are certain agencies I consistently help brands move away from. Still -- I don't think those agencies are 'bad' agencies. They are bad for those clients though. Better for others, presumably. And, even "the best agency in the world" to some of their clients, too. I don't want to work with them. And I wouldn't recommend them. But, the point is this. Finding an agency is easy. Finding the right agency is hard. Agencies should be more selective in who they take on. Agencies should be more graceful when they lose clients. Agencies should stay in their proverbial lane. Brands should communicate their needs better. Brands should be more transparent with their agencies. Brands should invest more into their agencies. *not necessarily $$. Good agencies exist. Bad agencies exist. Great agencies exist. Good to you, may be bad to another. Great is the goal. Ya just gotta find them. ..ya may have to kiss a few frogs first, too.

How did Spotify use data to create a custom user experience? They became a personal DJ who knows your favorite tunes better than you do. They used data to understand what your listeners wanted to hear. They used your info to make playlists just for you. They didn't just gather data, they really dug into it, finding out what songs you'd love. By creating a listening experience that is tailored to your taste, Spotify is able to give something few companies do well...the perfect product-market fit. The lessons: focus on what your users want, use data smartly, and adjust their experience accordingly. Thoughts?

Q: How can you leverage media outlets to effectively share your message? A: Well... media doesn't want to share your message. But secondly, you probably don't know how to share your message in the first place. Let's go deeper... Firstly, no media entity in this world cares about your message—maybe if your mom owns a paper, sure, but that's it. Media cares about one thing: publishing stories that get clicks and sell subscriptions. To share your message through media outlets, align yourself with the publication's goals. Second, you can't build any kind of brand momentum by focusing on your product or service. That's not a message or a story worth sharing—that's a sales pitch. You must develop a solid vision and mission before your work on messaging. Internal alignment happens before external alignment.

FOMO is something every brand needs to master in different parts of the customer journey. We've gone from 0 to $80M in the last 5 years. This is what we've learned in the 3 easiest ways to induce FOMO. ✔ Push UGC Not in the standard influencer usage of UGC. Encourage your buyers to share stories, reviews, and photos featuring your products. Here’s the plug-and-play setup: 1)  Create a page on your website dedicated to customer stories.  2)  Social Media Campaigns (make a hashtag)  3)  Contest and Giveaways - Host a contest where users share photos or videos of them using your product for a chance to win a prize. ✔ Leverage Social Proof Include it in your copy. People love reading about the success stories of others, especially first-time buyers. Garners trust for the brand + makes them feel confident that if it worked for others, it’ll work for them too. Do it through email, SMS, ads, or any other content that you push out to your audience. ✔ Create REAL Urgency There’s a few ways you can do this, 1) If you say there are only ten pieces left in stock – once the ten pieces are sold out, you MUST say SOLD OUT. 2) Limited-Edition Products Change up the packaging, sell it only in-store, or the countless other ways to run a limited-edition item. 3) The Countdown Timer Stick a live countdown timer on the page where you’re running a limited-time offer. The reason this method is so effective is because it’s something about actually visualizing time running out that makes buyers start running around like headless chickens. Earlier today I interviewed ABM expert and agency owner 🔶🔸Mason Cosby🔸🔶 for an Agency Journey episode. Here's some things I learned from the conversation: 1. Know your weaknesses and hire accordingly. 2. Don't hire too much too quickly. 3. Move fast on firing if there isn't a fit. But help people leaving your team find a new place, too, by leveraging your network. 4. ABM programs usually put too much emphasis on tools (which one to use and how) vs. stuff like comp structures for the sales team, incentives, and other people issues. (Funnily enough that's what I've learned form being part of ZenPilot too—with our clients we often find that training on the right project management habits is much more important than setting up the PM tool correctly.) 5. When podcast hosts say "sorry to date you", it means something different than the usual meaning 😅 In this case it means "oops, I mentioned the time when we're recording this so the audience will know how long it took for the episode to come out" 6. Mason's success on LinkedIn is fueled by building a consistent habit + curating an audience by sending targeted connection requests + sharing the overlap of "what I've learned" and "what's relevant for my audience". 7. Mason's hard work is fueled by: – having written his obituary in advance; – connecting his business to a higher mission than just growth and revenue; – having an incredibly supportive spouse + being aligned on a common vision – finding community and mentorship outside of the context of his business.
