🇯🇵 MacroMicro's Latest Insights on the Japanese Yen and Equities 1️⃣ BOJ Policy Underpins Yen Amid Narrowing US-Japan Rate Gap With economic growth and wages improving, October's core-core inflation rose to 2.3% (from 2.1%), signaling further evidence of a wage-price growth cycle consistent with BOJ projections. Governor Kazuo Ueda has highlighted potential for additional rate normalization, with markets expecting a 15 bps hike in December and a cumulative 25–50 bps increase in 2024. The yen's primary driver remains the US-Japan rate spread. Overseas machinery orders, a proxy for tech sector growth, previously surged 37% YoY but decelerated in Q3 due to yen strength and higher base effects. Orders fell to -3.0% YoY (from 22.6%), with the 3-month average at 19.5% (from 30.3%). Considering Japanese equities' historical sensitivity to yen fluctuations and weaker export machinery orders, further outperformance appears more unlikely. MPF Ratings released Q2 2024 MPF Asset Class Fund Flow Summary by highlighting a conflicting trend that saw MPF total assets achieve a record high while recording a surprising drop in net inflows in the 2nd quarter of 2024. Q2 2024 net inflows are estimated to be $11.77bn which is approximately 10% lower than MPF’s historical 5 year quarterly average and 13% lower than corresponding Q2 numbers for the past 5 years. MPF net inflows mirror the employment landscape however factors such as reduced voluntary contributions, permanent departures and early retirement can also skew short term net inflow data. It’s difficult to pinpoint the exact factor but one cannot rule out any reason for the sharp and unexpected short term drop. [Mirae Asset introduces high dividend yield ETF to China] Mirae Asset Global Investments, a leading asset manager based in Korea, has introduced a high dividend yield exchange-traded fund to the mainland Chinese market through cross-border trading with Hong Kong, the firm announced Tuesday. The Global X Hang Seng High Dividend Yield ETF, operated by the asset manager’s ETF arm in Hong Kong, was set up for trading on China’s Shanghai Stock Exchange and Shenzhen Stock Exchange on Monday. The ETF tracks shares with high dividend yields on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange's benchmark Hang Seng index. The net asset is about $272 million, the largest among the high dividend yield ETFs listed on the Hong Kong exchange. While most Hong Kong ETFs cross-listed in China track the Hang Seng Tech index, a gauge of major Chinese tech shares listed in Hong Kong, the newly introduced ETF product follows shares that yield high dividends.
