More than 100 dairies in California’s Central Valley have tested positive for H5N1 avian influenza, and 6 California dairy workers have tested positive. On October 8th, I headed to Tulare to see what I could find. I stumbled across a pile of dead cows on the side of the road outside of Mendonsa Farms. Just down the street at Land O Lakes Borges Dairy, I found a mother and calf lying dead near the street. Newsweek (https://lnkd.in/gWqReAzm) just published a story about it, and it's clear the situation in the Central Valley is dire. They would not publish my footage because it was too gruesome. You can see those photos and videos here: https://lnkd.in/gdbXXXXk Anja Raudabaugh, CEO of Western United Dairies—the trade organization representing Mendonsa Farms said, “There are so many cattle passing away from avian influenza that the rendering trucks are backed up, which is why [the cattle] had been left there for a period of time…We are desperately overwhelmed at this point.” The animal-based protein industry always finds itself in these situations. The large-scale confinement of animals creates an arms race against nature and puts us in impossible circumstances with no good solutions. But there are some things we can do—we can educate the public, protect workers and financially support them directly instead of bailing out large corporations, and redirect public funds towards supporting animal-free methods of food production. In the meantime, we need mandatory statewide bulk milk tank testing, public awareness campaigns and giving workers access to seasonal flu vaccinations. We also need more people on the ground to document this unprecedented outbreak in real time. The media is ready and willing to write about this. Improving a breeder vaccination program involves ensuring the program is comprehensive, effective, and well-documented. 1. **Digital Record Keeping**: Transitioning from paper records to a digital database can help with real-time updates, easier access, and more secure storage of information. 2. **Clearer Layout and Structuring**: - Use color codes or separate sections more distinctly for easier reading. - Include clear headings and subheadings to separate different types, timings, and methods of vaccinations. 3. **Vaccine Efficacy Monitoring**: - Schedule regular efficacy checks for each vaccine used. - Document any side effects, failures, or instances of disease outbreaks despite vaccination. 4. **Regular Review and Updates**: - Implement a system to regularly review and update the vaccination program based on the latest scientific research and disease prevalence in the area. - Involve consulting with a veterinarian to ensure the program aligns with current best practices. 5. **Training for Staff**: - Ensure staff administering vaccines are regularly trained and updated on proper techniques, handling, and administration routes. - Provide periodic refresher courses to avoid human errors. 6. **Thorough Documentation**: - Ensure each entry includes all necessary details like batch numbers, expiry dates, doses, and any observation notes. - Ensure spaces for signature and verification are filled out for accountability. 7. **Integrate Biosecurity Measures**: - Include information on biosecurity measures that should accompany vaccinations to enhance effectiveness, such as disinfection protocols and quarantine procedures for new arrivals. 8. **Feedback Loop**: - Create a system for regular feedback from workers and veterinarians on how the program is functioning and any observed issues. - Incorporate feedback promptly into program revisions. 9. **Alternate Plan for Vaccine Shortages**: - Have alternative plans or substitute vaccines in place in case of supply chain disruptions or vaccine shortages. 10. **Including a Timeline or Calendar**: - Develop a timeline or calendar view to help visualize the entire vaccination schedule more clearly. Implementing these suggestions can potentially improve the effectiveness, accessibility, and reliability of the vaccination program, while also ensuring better overall health and productivity of the breeder flock.

A lot of media buzz surrounding the increased identification of human cases in California. Is the virus mutating to infect people more readily? It doesn't appear so. This is likely a simple reflection of increased monitoring of workers and collaboration efforts on the ground level of the California outbreak. Still, we need to maintain a healthy respect for what the virus is capable of and continue to monitor workers in order to isolate virus (or at least its RNA) from those infected. These virus isolates are sequenced and evaluated for mutations that could indicate increase virulence and ability to spread between humans. Will this 100% certainly happen? No. However, it is a numbers game and as long as we stay in front of it we can be proactive instead of reactive if it does. Influenza A viruses have the ability to change dramatically through a process called "reassortment". I liken this to a deck of cards. Each flu has it's own deck of genetic material. If two different Influenza A viruses, such as H5N1 (bovine) and a seasonal flu strain (e.g. a seasonal H3N2 that a worker gets from his kid) infect the same person, they can trade cards in their deck, which can result in a new deck (e.g. H5N2) that may have very different properties than either virus alone. We want to avoid this. The goal is to stay calm, proactively monitor and respond in real time.

H5N1 infections in California dairies on the rise. Unofficially 40+ herds affected. Rapid spread consistent with what has been seen in other states. One turkey flock depopulated. We will likely see exponential spread the next week or two. California is home to 1000+ dairies. It is difficult to keep the virus out as, aside from movement of lactating cows, the mechanism of spread between herds has not been elucidated. Supportive care of affected animals and “closing down the herd” (not bringing in naive replacements) as best as possible may help reduce viral cycling. Influenza will stick around longer if given naive hosts to jump into (replacement heifers). Positive bulk tanks usually begin 7-14 (ish) days before obvious clinical signs and can linger for many months after. With low path avian influenza in turkeys, closing down the flock allows the birds to seroconvert and eventually drives the virus load down, especially once all birds have seroconverted. For those not yet infected, keep vehicle and people traffic as minimal as possible. Spray tires, ask those that come onto the dairy to NOT visit any positive dairies prior that day and encourage regular vehicle washing on top of tire/vehicle undercarriage sanitation. Bolster your rodent, fly and wild bird abatement programs. Keep cats and dogs off the dairies. Keep dust down. Don’t feed stray cats raw milk (this virus kills them fast), don’t drink raw milk. For infected, try and dispose of hospital milk in such a way that reduces exposure for wildlife, pasteurize waste milk fed to calves (undetermined if it causes health issues in calves). I’ve found antibodies in waste milk fed calves (about 60% of those tested) from infected dairies, I’m unsure if these are from colostrum or from infection (or both). Be cognizant of poultry operations nearby. This kills poultry. Communicate effectively and try to avoid driving equipment, trucks (especially milk trucks), and cattle trailers on roads past these farms. It takes a VERY small amount of organic matter with virus (think dime sized) to kill 1 million birds. Offer PPE to employees whether you’re infected or not. Highest viral load is in the milk but it’s also found in the urine and upper airway (milkers, breeders, hospital crew, calf crew if handling waste milk are all likely at increased risk). If nothing else, make sure they protect their eyes. If they get sick, please encourage testing and antiviral treatment. It’s anonymous and helps safeguard public health. No one wants this tipping over into another pandemic and these measures will help. It’s going to be a tough few months for California. Hang in there and please be nice to your vets. This situation is tough all around.

#H5N1 confirmed in a pig in Oregon by #USDA. A few important notes 👇 - This is concerning as pigs have receptors similar to humans which, enabling influenza viruses to recombine and potentially form strains that could infect and spread among humans. - The strain in the pig is likely to be of avian origin rather than #dairy cattle origin, which would require more mutations to cross into humans. However, the risk is still present and is big. - Implementing biosecurity practices to protect humans and animals is more crucial than ever.

Zoetis Does anyone have good information on contraindications of Librela/Solensia for patients who have neurologic disease? Could it exacerbate near disease? Unmask it? (ie: Degenerative Myelopathy, IVDD, Seizures, etc...) Does anyone refrain from using Libera in Dogs with concurrent OA and degenerative myelopathy for example? IVDD? I am curious to see what the pharmacological answer is, or is it just that they feel less pain and are more prone to injuring themselves and causing further neurological clinical signs? Thanks in advance!
