Setting the tone and managing the temperature is good advice for #CEOs. All boards and their chief executives face challenges. How the CEO navigates conflict has an outsized impact on them, their executive team, and the board. It may seem counterintuitive to the new CEO to take the lead with their "boss," but board members are taking their cues from you. They did hire you to lead! 1. Demonstrating #transparency, openness to challenge, and different perspectives will make your board more comfortable asking challenging questions. No CEO benefits from a board of "yes" folks or groupthink. 2. Share #problems early if they have the potential to become critical. You may prefer to be optimistic and engage in magical thinking, but if things go south, the board will not be happy dealing with a surprise emergency. 3. Understand your #stakeholders and treat them as individuals when dealing with the early rumblings of disagreement. Collecting individual perspectives will make it easier to keep issues in the right proportion. These three actions resonate the most with me, having been on both sides of the board/CEO relationship. Make Compensation Decisions with Clear Guiding Principles In a recent meeting with a client’s executive leadership team, I facilitated a discussion about Compensation Guiding Principles. A principle is a kind of rule, belief, or idea that guides you. They are basic truths that help you with your life and decisions. And in the case of compensation decisions, there is often tension and a balancing of priorities that needs to happen to arrive at an outcome you can communicate with transparency and that builds trust. It’s a good idea as an employer to write your own guiding principles so you have a compass to reference if you find yourself debating what action to take and how best to communicate the decision and why behind it. Compensation Guiding Principles: 1.     Alignment to Business Strategy & Goals: Influences compensation philosophy  2.     Affordable: Impacts budget for annual increases and market/equity adjustments  3.     Competitive: Percentile of the external market targeted – typically 50th  4.     Equitable & Fair: Consistent use of standard pay decision making processes  5.     Transparent: How openly you communicate to employees  6.     Determining the value of the JOB is based on the external market and what is competitive given the pay practices of other employers balanced with internal equity.  7.     Determining where to pay the EMPLOYEE in the range assigned to the job is typically based on factors like performance, tenure, work location, education, and/or experience. My answer to the question, "How Can Executives Foster a Strong Organizational Culture?" is: Create a Distinctive Shared Identity Executives are pivotal in shaping a robust organizational culture by cultivating a distinctive leadership lexicon within their teams. This language articulates desired and undesired behaviors uniquely tailored to the organization's ethos. For example, some organizations characterize these behaviors as 'creative' or 'reactive,' while others describe them as 'above-the-line' or 'below-the-line.' Notably, one company employs the terms 'backhand' for weak behaviors and 'forehand' for strong ones. Likewise, the adoption of evocative nicknames, such as Googlers, Amazonians, Metamates, Chimers, Dashers, or Palantirians, encapsulates a shared identity indicative of the desired culture.
